Why You Never Heard the Truth About Vitamin D

(NaturalNews) There is an epidemic of vitamin D deficiency sweeping across our modern world, and it's an epidemic of such depth and seriousness that it makes the H1N1 swine flu epidemic look like a case of the sniffles by comparison. Vitamin D deficiency is not only alarmingly widespread, it's also a root cause of many other serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease.

A new study published in the March, 2010 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that a jaw-dropping 59 percent of the population is vitamin D deficient. In addition, nearly 25 percent of the study subjects were found to have extremely low levels of vitamin D.

Lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Kremer at the McGill University Health Center, said "Abnormal levels of vitamin D are associated with a whole spectrum of diseases, including cancer, osteoporosis, and diabetes, as well as cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders."

This new study also documents a clear link between vitamin D deficiency and stored body fat. This supports a theory I've espoused here on NaturalNews for many years: That sunshine actually promote body fat loss. Vitamin D may be the hormonal mechanism by which this fat loss phenomenon operates.

The research findings on vitamin D, by the way, get even better...more at link.

Duh. They were born that way. We weren't all born in the tropics
though. And even if we were, we'd still need clothing to keep the
body heat in. Nearly 100 degrees is very warm. It's the human
need to have light touch the skin to make the hormone for use
by the immune system that's so important.

    • @Rostradamus. Here's something that's not from Ripley's Believe
It Or Not. In 1986 I bought a bottle of Dale Alexander Norweigan
Cod Liver Oil, put it in my frig set at 33 degrees and have kept it there
since. From time to time in the Winter when I don't get out that much
to get some Sun light on my skin for 20 minutes, I take a teaspoon full.
It's still good after nearly a quarter century. Cod Liver Oil has THE
highest concentration of Viatmin D of any food source anywhere in
the world. It's also loaded with the other oil soluable vitamins like
Vitamin A, E, and K . It costs more than it used to because the
oceans are overfished, but it's still a bargain superfood at a cheap
      price. Problem solved.

    • Your logic is wrong. To say that sunshine itself is a factor in weightloss does not follow. How many seriously overweight people spend time outside? Most outdoor activities are physical and require good physique.

    • Marbled_Godwit:

The logic is quite correct. The comment had nothing to do with physical activity. Maybe you are unaware but the human body produces it's own vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. It therefore follows that if Vitamin D helps with weight loss then exposure to more sun which causes us to make vitamin D in our bodies will help with weight loss.

    • We're, also, are facing an epidemic of magnesium deficency....Diet, diet, diet...
I argued with the nurse practitioner at my daughter dermatologist regarding the need for sun, he insisted there was no good reason for getting any sun at all.....no, no, no he is so wrong... a little sunshine does most a world of good. Everything in moderation. We are killing ourselves with our vitamin/nutrient deficient foods, grown in depleted soils, and stuffing ourselves with garbage while our stressful life styles are finishing us off. Just look at what we as a nation spend the most money on....not our nutrition.

here's a thought... fact: if one goes throughout the world and samples both males and females from any population and you find that nearly always females are lighter in skin color than men. why? perhaps, as the theory goes, because they need a slightly greater sensitivity to sunlight than men. why? because they are the ones who carry the developing fetus, and we know what can happen if the fetus suffers deficiencies (things like spina bifida happen). so the theory is that women are slightly lighter then men to ensure a healthy dose of vitamins for the fetus, and the risk of cancers (in the mother) is negligible compares to the illnesses caused by such deficiencies (in their children).

yes vitamin b for sb, folic acid is catalyzed by uv radiation. the point isn't about spina bifida (that was just an example of something caused by a deficiency), but rather the general need for uv exposure and its necessity for the biosynthesis of some things essential to our devo.

Just wanted to say so in case any one pregnant wanted to OD on a vitamin we don't urinate out! B vitamins are water soluble, Vit D is not and the risk for OD is higher....if taken orally!

    • I dont buy it, just not fully. I think there has to be another reason at play as to why more and more people are developing this. I mean yeah, lack of sun light is a key factor, people are lazy. for some it maybe even be certain food that we eat. But, what if its something like chemicals in the water?(not to sound paranoid). But that could easily be the case.

    • This is true, try to spend at least 20 minutes outside everyday. It is easy to spend all one's time indoors - house - car - work - back - especially in the winter.

Take walks with the dog, or take the dog to the park., thats what i do!

I think sunny D is going to cause a lot more health deficiencies
Yes we as a whole need to be out in the sun more, but the levels of sun have become dangerous because of the depleting ozone layer
it's a catch 22 all because of how we treat the enivronment, that's the cause of our cancers

It could, also, be a medication you are taking or a sign/symptom of something you have developed and need to see your doctor regarding. There are many disease processes this could be a result of... may not be , but you shoild have it checked out all the same...better safe than sorry.

    • It has also been shown that cancer rates are a lot lower among populations that spend more time outdoors, such as in many African nations.

    • Yeah, it's important to get enough sunshine for many reasons, psychologically and physiologically. As more and more indoor entertainment fills people's days this problem will get more serious. I think more people, myself included, should start taking multivitamins periodically to keep it all in check.

This could be true in some cases, but not all. I'm a vegetarian, have been for 8 years. I also am very active and work outside. But I found out that I had an extreme vit d deficiency year or so ago. My levels were extremely low, so I take a high dose not available in stores once a week. But working outside does help, its the best remedy, its a shame whats happening with our planet and the sun light.

I actually don't have much dairy at all. But why would I want to lower my dairy intake, when milk has calcium and VIt d in it.Why would a supplement be a better option than glass of milk and sun light?

Actually , the long intestinal tract indicates that should be the majority of the diet , and our molars are designed to eat plants . Lions , for instance have very short intestines , which is good in that this design does not allow toxic build up from meat bacteria in the lion's body . If you were born an Eskimo , things might be different .

i heard something about how australia has the highest rates of skin cancer for white people... so they began a huge campaign to get everyone to wear sunscreen, but now they're having epedemics of the cancers and diseases related to heavy use of sunsceens and a lack of vitamin D and K. just a funny thought.

    • Lay out in the sun- it probably used to be the easiest vitamin to obtain when humans were hunter gatherers, even when humans were subsistence farmers. Now, we have everything we could ever want indoors. Why leave?
