Coulter plans filing rights violation after U of Ottowa protests

"Inflammatory right-wing pundit Ann Coulter took aim at a University of Ottawa administrator Monday night, saying an e-mail from the school warning her to use “restraint, respect and consideration” when addressing Ontario students during a speaking tour this week made her a victim of a “hate crime.”

"In Houle’s e-mail, a copy of which was obtained by the National Post, the administrator urges Coulter to weigh her words with “respect and civility in mind” when she speaks at the University of Ottawa campus Tuesday.

“Our domestic laws, both provincial and federal, delineate freedom of expression (or ‘free speech’) in a manner that is somewhat different than the approach taken in the United States. I therefore encourage you to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here.”

Houle goes on: “Promoting hatred against any identifiable group would not only be considered inappropriate, but could in fact lead to criminal charges.”

---

That e-mail sounds pretty reasonable, actually. I wonder how much they're leaving out, though. Do you think she has a legitimate case? I'd say absolutely not.. considering the type of speeches she gives that are full of cutting insults and obviously stabbing remarks. She's also not part of an identifiable crowd, as she's far more "radical" and "outspoken" than many conservatives. Also, isnt' the HRC an American-only institution? Not sure how that would work.

    • And another thing, how does one equate her being stopped from that one speech with "there's no free speech in Canada."

    • Holy chicken buns on a stick! A protest does not violate her rights to speech. People protested her because they don't want to hear her crap. The government did not stop her. There was no police or larger government action stopping her from speaking.

We canadians have the right to protest - that's OUR free speech (missed that part, didn't you). We also have the right to not put up with her bullshit. He'll, we did the woman a favor. She could have been charged with a hate crime or something -I don't doubt she'd have said something offensive.

I don't know what's got some of your (some of the commentors on this thread) panties in a twist. We don't want to put up with shit, and by whatever powers that be, we will not let some blonde cow tell us what are her "rights" in our country.

      Seriously, coulter, suck it up.

    • Her rights weren't violated. She was in Canada! Not the US! Shouldn't she be concerned about what's happening South of the border?

Oh i wish we were more like Canada! Then wed have socialized health care, and really cheap prescription drugs. Plus Canadians are super friendly... most dont even lock their doors! Not to mention that even though a greater percentage of them have guns than Americans their number of shooting deaths are astronomically smaller than ours...

    • Does anyone else have this unbreakable association between Coulter and Courtney Love? I feel like Coulter might just be some conservative alter ego of Courtney's.

    • It doesn't sound like she was the victim of a hate crime--it sounds more like she was given some free legal advice so she did not get charged with a crime while in Canada.

There is a difference between barbarians and civilization. I class Ann Coulter as a brainless barbarian who has no control of her mouth. Civilized people that is a rarity here in the USA do have a right to complain about foul mouth persons like Coulter. Freedom of speech has a limit on how far a person goes before breeching the language of decency and civility. Canada too has little left for the common people but at least they seem to be a bit mor ecivil than we who live to the south.

shit, we get pissed just at the dude promoting the bible study.

ann coulter is ridicuolus and sick!! like other right-winged pundit types of her poorly educated and brainwashed nature, but she's just way more fucked up. simply rush limbaugh's female counterpart.

any human with compassion and a mind should in no way respect her.

    • What protected rights does a visiting American have in Canada? Not mention the irony of her rights being "violated" for not being able to speak at a school when she wanted all Muslims to be on a no fly list. It is a publicly funded school which means that tax dollars were paying for her speech. These students had every right to protest.

she is not contending that her rights were violated, she is saying she is a victim under the canadian hate speech laws.
Students spoke hatefull things about her, and in canada that is illegal.

The Hate Speech Laws state that an individual cannot spread hate propaganda towards a group of people, which includes Muslims, Christians, African-Americans, etc.; it doesn't say anything about people protesting against her and blocking a building because she's a racist and ignorant.

If a person does feel that they're being offended individually, they could go and claim they were being harassed or having their character defamed, but come on, she should know there are going to be people that will speak out against her, especially with her opinions.

Oh, and let's not forget that a pie got thrown at her over at Arizona.

Also, here's one of her comments on women and voting... no joke:

"If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women.

It also makes the point, it is kind of embarrassing, the Democratic Party ought to be hanging its head in shame, that it has so much difficulty getting men to vote for it. I mean, you do see it’s the party of women and 'We’ll pay for health care and tuition and day care -- and here, what else can we give you, soccer moms?' "

I guess she should go after FOX too then.

The woman is primarily interested in American politics not Canadian politics. I personally suspect she went up to Canada specifically to draw this kind of attention so she could take advantage of their legal system. She's completely run out of sympathy in the United States so she's ambushing a neighboring country that she hopes doesn't know any better yet.

    • This does sound like her book sales are in decline and her agent is trying to drum up sales. It is all about the money and how poor Ann Coulter was victimized by the completely irrational Canadians who are known for their outrageous demands? ? ?

They just asked that she be respectful, which obviously is inappropriate to her.

    • i disagree, free speech should be only for those who are educated otherwise, well we give the idiots a seat at the table to spoil the intelligent exchange of ideas. So in order to grant free speech to everyone we should educate every citizen at the highest standard possible.

    • Two things....whether or not you agree with Ann Coulter, it is vital to the health of a free and open society that ideas, no matter how offensive, are allowed.

That said...she is full of shit. It was her organizers that pulled out of the speech. 1000 people had gathered to watch her speech, and for whatever reason, her backers told the school she was going to show up. Her own people were the ones that prevented her from speaking. This is all a fake story made to get her in the headlines to sell more tickets for appearances down the line and sell more books.

Or...you could have read the official press release from the University of Ottawa which again, said that Coulter's people canceled the event, or the Ottawa press that covered the event which said the vast majority of the people there were fans of hers waiting to get into the event, or the comments from people that attended the event, all of whom were quite amazed to be told that they participated in a near riot...

Or you can just got to one single source of information and take that as the absolute accurate picture of the events. Seriously dude...what are you five? This is a typical tactic to generate controversy and buzz to sell tickets and books. She isn't the first person to pull a stunt like this and she won't be the last. Far from being persecuted for her views, she is gaming the system. Hopefully however, people in Canada will realize how stupid their anti-hate speech laws are.

I try to stay away from "official" press releases they are most always carefully worded to avoid the truth.

Okay...ignore the press release of the school...

but how can you ignore the local press and the interviews of the people that waited patiently in line to see Coulter perform? This is all a gimmick designed to generate fake controversy. She, and many other performers, have done this in the past.

Tell you what...if within the next tens years, Ann Coulter actually sues the University of Ottawa...I'll take you to Chuck-e-Cheese. Does that sound like fun?

it amazes me that you can see that this is faux, designed for a specific outcome, but you fail to see that these congressmen claiming that people spit on em and called em nigger was done to put the tea partiers on the defense and the topic of discussion off of what was being done to the healthcare industry.
Just look at the video it is obviously a stage production --- the camera person had only to pan the camera one inch to show the person the congressman was talking to, but he didn't -- because there was nobody.

Wait what? I got to process this....

I never mentioned the supposed interaction between tea party protesters and the democratic congress members. Furthermore, even if the Tea Party/Congress Members interaction did not occur, it plays no role on what occurred at the University of Ottawa. You also seem to think that my political persuasion plays a role in this discussion. I fail to see how my comments with you warrant a positive definition of my political persuasion. I honestly unaffiliated with any party.

Montesooma, in all honesty, I do not understand how people in the United States can honestly point to the actions of either national party as being different than the other. I am not asking you to agree with me or even think like me...but I implore you to utilize multiple sources of information about the world. If someone is using only the one source of information that already conforms and re-validates their own preconceived notion of the world, be it Fox News, MSNBC, Current TV...whatever,it is only hurting themselves. Be proud of your views, don't ever let anyone silence you...but don't be afraid to challenge your own preconceived notions and view the world through the full spectrum that we in this generation have that no other has had prior. The world is at your fingertips.

i do agree that both parties are alike sometimes.
My problem with the repubs is that they aren't conservative enough and always compromise with the far left, the end result is that we end up further left.
My problem with the dems is that they don't exist anymore, they have been hijacked by european progressive america haters and loonie factions of every ilk. They use whatever lies and slimy tactics they have to make people believe they are for the common folk (class envy, populism etc) when all their really trying to do is subject more people to dependence on govnment (themselves).
I am a constitutionalist and enjoy when someone exposes the enemy within, be it ann coulter or keith olderman or you.
