Apparently there is a precedent for the Pope resigning from the Papacy.
I wouldn't hold my breath for this happening in this case, however. That would doubtless be seen by this Teutonic Pope as an admission of guilt; something neither the Catholic Church nor former German soldiers are likely to ever do.
