Ferguson plays down Rooney injury fears

England fans will be relieved to hear that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has dismissed Wayne Rooney's ankle injury, sustained last night during a 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich, as "not terribly serious."

Rooney injured his right ankle during the end of the match and limped off the pitch, supported by a member of Man Utd's support staff. He later left the stadium on crutches.

The 24-year-old (anyone else feel old?) is set for a scan but is in doubt for this weekend's Premier League match against Chelsea.

Edit: there's an excellent write-up about the tabloids' shrieking over-reaction to what's probably going to be a fairly innocuous injury here.

    • on the contrary this is apparently a minor injury, this is good for England. A bit of a spell on the sidelines, will help keep him that bit fresher for playing in our traditional quarter final exit. The very best thing for the England team would now be for Man Utd to crash out of the Champions league and be out of the title race by the team he's fit again. That way he can hopefully be used sparingly and avoid running round like a nutter and seriously hurting himself when he's back.

From a personal point of view I'd take a certain amount of pleasure from seeing Utd miss out on the big silverware too.

    • Some teams will be hoping for a draw in the Chelsea and Man U match, not sure if an injured Rooney will mean this is more or less likely. Though with Rooney being Manchester's strongest player at the moment, playing a lot of matches and getting injures like this doesn't look good for the World Cup chances.
