Will Saturday schools close the gap between rich and poor?

Shadow Schools secretary Michael Gove proposed at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers' annual conference that Saturday lessons for children in the poorest communities would "help to close the achievement gap with richer children whose parents could afford extras such as tutoring and music lessons."- The Guardian

However critics state the Saturday lessons would give teachers a tougher workload and that the classes "could become a "badge of dishonour" if pupils were forced to go"-The Guardian. The article says the plan would require more teachers, and I'm guessing with cuts in government departments this might be difficult to fund.

In your opinion, would Saturday schools help children from low incomes gain more from the educational system or does it assume to much into poor/rich like/hate education experience?
