Is this the face of Jesus? Artists claim to have recreated Christ's face from Shroud of Turin

Computer artists claim to have recreated the face of Jesus Christ using digital technology.

The image was created by taking information and blood encoded on the Turin Shroud - the blood-stained linen that many believe was the burial cloth of the crucified Jesus Christ - and transforming it into a 3D image.

In a two-hour TV special on the History Channel, to air in the U.S. tonight, the computer artists will reveal their image of Jesus in full.
But the results may surprise some viewers. According to the company that made the image it does not resemble the popularized version of Jesus.

Computer artist Ray Downing, the president of Studio Macbeth, said: 'We 'lifted' the blood and isolated it [on the computer] so that it would sit 'in air' [on a transparent background].'

He explained that because the Turin Shroud was wrapped around, rather than being draped on the body, the blood was transferred to the cloth as it was wound.
Therefore it did not align with the places on the face from which it originated.

The ancient shroud contains a faint impression of the front and back of a human body, along with blood, dirt and water stains.

The year-long project culminated with a team of graphic artists using the newest technology to create a computer-generated image.

'I have a lot of information about that face and my estimation is we're pretty darn close to what this man looked like,' Mr Downing said.

Mr Downing claims that his technique of computer imaging actually uncovered what substance created the image on the shroud and enabled him to see for the first time the actual face of Jesus.

And he said he said he would offer an explanation for how the image ended up on the shroud.

Downing added: 'I will reveal at the end of the show the type of event that must have occurred 2,000 years ago.'

    • I have went on to read with great interest some of the other comments made over many days, by many people with extremely varying opinions. Who ever said Jesus was white? I am fair skinned, labeled Caucasian, and I have Christian brothers and sisters who are black, oriental, and of many other races and nationalities. On a personal note, my love for Jesus, whom so many mock, has always led me to not "see" other humans "in color". Once, prejudice was shoved down my throat so much that I became that way
toward those whom I felt were attacking me. I was only an ignorant child, 11 or 12 years old, and I am so proud this bad thing did not last longer than a couple of months. Again. Praise God.

I have wonderful Black friends, Jewish friends, Hispanic friends, and I love each and every one of them very much. My great grandmother was Sioux, . My brother Winston is Black and I am honored to be able to call him my brother and my friend. My brother Frank is Hispanic and I am equally honored to call him my brother and my friend. My picture, or "icon" is me and my dog. I love all animals. They are not all alike. I love all humans and we certainly are not all alike. Praise God for this. The world would be mighty boring if we all looked the same would it not?
There is great beauty to be found in diversity. This includes human beings. Labels are demeaning to all of us. I agree that the pictures of Jesus on the cross depict Him as lily white. His biological Mother was Jewish. Jewish people are not all "lily white". We do not know what Jesus looked like.

I believe that someday I will when I see Him face to face, and to quote the Apostle Paul (not verbatim) "Then I shall SEE, as now I am being SEEN." How wonderful that will be. I have deviated from the subject of the shroud and I hope this isn't an unacceptable thing. Sincerely and Respectfully, Debra

    • The shroud of Turin has long been an object of great interest, and controversy, and as an avid researcher, I have followed its' path of study for a long time. The analysis of blood patterns revealed on the shroud is very interesting.
IF it is truly the burial shroud of our Lord Jesus Christ, and, IF the wealth of scientific technology and computer graphics available now were to prove this beyond the shadow of doubt, we, the peoples of the world would not be told. Why? The "world" is too busy trying to deny Jesus Christ's existence, as were the Pharisees, the Sanhedrin, and the Jewish priests in the Bible at the time Christ walked upon the earth, in and all around Jerusalem. On a cosmic scale, just over 2000 years ago is a very short time indeed.
The rulers of that time, and all humans, even now, who only put on an outward show of loving God, while inside are filled with hate, envy and greed, do not want any proof of the actual existence of Jesus revealed. This is as true today as it was then. I will follow this story with interest. Being a Christian makes it all the more intriguing to read all CREDIBLE sources. In the meantime, I am ill, this is my Sabbath, and I am only on line today because my prayers today have led me to tell all readers of comments that regardless of whether or not the shroud is real, Jesus Christ is real indeed, and all humanity will know this in time to come. I am truly blessed in that I asked Him to come into my heart some years ago, and He did. It is my greatest wish that everyone would invite Him into their heart also. But, I am just another sinner who happens to love God, and His grace has led me to see the light.
Everyone has the right to choose whom or what they believe in, and worship. I pray it is the real thing. Time WILL tell.
      Sincerely and Respectfully
      Debra

    • Yes, yet another opportunity for an (Censored by the schmucks at Current- a 4 letter word beginning with 'O' denoting a gathering of 3 or more people for sexual gratification) of self-righteous secular humanists and atheists. The hostility on display is enlightening. "For those who believe, no explanation is necessary. For those who do not, no explanation is possible."

As it is people who think they know, and as everyone's story and ideas are all different, and since everyone usually acquiesces to admitting they don't know everything, THEN, it must be that some are closer and the rest not so.

Therefore, it becomes a matter what, regardless of fervent belief, is not possible given what can be discerned as very most probably correct (all within the aforementioned slush of human misunderstandings, of course).

That's an idea, as he'd definitely garner the most popular page, could someone fake a Jesus page without getting the axe?

Or would they leave him on there to get crucified?

    • this should have been left at the face of "jesus'...to add 'christ' is a nice fiction that can not be proved or disproved. so another so-called false prophet, of which there were many in those days, was listed briefly in actual history, and like all the others, was condemnded...the term 'christ' was only added by the
p.r. guys, well after this guys death. why should we care to day about the real identity of a guy who may, or may not, have lived, several thousand years ago?
this might be a cool science project, it is otherwise irrelevant, since religion, christianity, and catholicism discount science....otherwise if they could prove this, they would no doubt cut into a million pieces and sell it for the highest buck...what they call 'relics'.

    • This artist's validity needs to be put to test. My bet is if I got bloody/muddy, and wrapped my self in cloth, and then got him to recreate my image using said cloth, he would be way off.

Or he could be completely right and i'll go to hell where I was headed anyways.

The life of Christ as seen through the eyes of Thomas Jefferson, a founding father who also believed in his existence. The Shroud of Turin may well not show the outline of Christ, but it may well also be true. I find it so intriguing that there are those who try so hard to convince others that Jesus never existed as if his actually exisiting were some sort of a threat to them... A man of peace who sought only to bring the message of light and hope to the world that we are that light and hope. Amazing.

    • Okay, there are obviously a lot of opinions about this thing. I personally think it's ridiculous. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT JESUS LOOKED LIKE! And this whole blonde hair, blue eye shit is really starting to irk me. It's getting to the point where people are starting to realize that Jesus wasn't Aryan. Sorry to burst your White Flight bubble, folks. Everyone knows the shroud is a fake. Woohoo, no surprise there. Why are people still trying to make it work? People don't understand that religion has been the downfall to humanity since day one. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good things that have come out of religion, but mostly the people, not the religion itself. I'm not a religious person at all, but I am a spiritual person, and I'd like to think of myself as an intelligent person. I shouldn't feel like my IQ dropped 45 points by watching the History Channel because they decide to do a 2 hour special about a hoax. I mean, really. Let's all get with the program, accept that Jesus had a bit of a tan, and get off the high horse thinking we can remake the face of him. By the way, I HIGHLY doubt of Mary was a virgin. I mean, let's get with it.

Nicholas Markell does these amazing images, showing Jesus in different ethnicities. Maybe those who are in denial can tear a page from his book!

Even though I believe that religion isn't real it does serves a necessary purpose. It teaches basic moral values and scares people, with visions of afterlife, into doing good and leading "god-fearing" lives. Kinda like bribing kids to be good before Santa visits.

The downfall is that unlike kids who eventually grow up and realize Santa is imaginary, people never get around to realizing that God doesn't exist.

If it wasn't for the constant religious wars between people of different faiths i would have no problem with religion. Some people just can't handle themselves without being threatened by a supernatural being. To those people I say ignorance is bliss.

No. It's ironic that this is airing on the "History Channel" considering there is no historical evidence that Jesus existed from the time he was supposedly alive.

Josephus would have just been born as Jesus was allegedly being crucified if I'm not mistaken. All other accounts follow a similar trend of being written many years after Christ's death (which is impossible since he never lived in the first place).

The references to Jesus in the writings of Josephus have been demonstrated to be a fraud - completely different writing style to the rest of his writings - and was probably added by Christians long after Josephus (who was a Jew) had died.

As far as any Religion goes I think it would be nice to worship the beautiful message...it is mostly the same at the beginning of any Religion....
not the messenger...and don't worry about what the messenger
looked like or what ground they walked upon...not a day goes by that someone does not die in the name of God...I love the quote..."you know you have created God in your image when your God hates the same things you do.....

    • I doubt it's accurate considering that the Shroud of Turin is a complete fake. It's a primitive photograph probably made during the Italian Renaissance. Scientists found evidence of photosensitive chemicals, the placement of the head portion of the image is off, carbon dating places the cloth's age from 1300-1600 A.D (Carbon dating isn't really exact, but it's never really off by more than a few hundred years), and finally, Jewish burial customs of the time did not include placing bodies in the tomb with the burial shroud. The body would be wrapped in linen strips then placed in the tomb. The family of the deceased would wait for the body to decompose then place the bones in a ceremonial burial container called an ossuary. Believe me, If there was any proof that it was authentic, I would be the first to tell you. However, there simply isn't.

    • Forgive me for a bit of a tangent:

A lot of people are saying something here that I agree with: Why is the History Channel even wasting it's time with this?

The obvious answer is ratings, and I can only assume that's the same reason I still see shows about Bigfoot, alien abductions, Nessie etc on the "Science" channels like NatGeo and Discovery Science. I mean, how many times do we have to go out there and say "Is Bigfoot real?" "Er, NOPE!" before they stop making specials about it? How many times, and through how many different scientific disciplines, does the Shroud of Turin need to be proven false for people to get over it?

THAT obvious answer is probably very unfortunate- people tend to believe whatever they want. Now, I'm not saying there is NO POSSIBLE WAY the shroud isn't jesus or bigfoot isn't romping around or aliens didn't probe you- I just don't think the probability is very high. In fact, it's really REALLY low.

Continuing to promote these ridiculously improbably ideas as "history" or "science" is doing our society and culture a great injustice!

We could make a video that propounds a group of scientists actually found God - at the Hadron Collider - they hit the button and a big voice boomed back about 'why have you gone this far?'

Do a good enough job and the history channel would have the biggest ratings ever.

We could submit new ratings estimates at a surprise contract re-negotiation right before air-time - get paid decently.

The fact that it has been studied and discussed for this long just says that people refuse to accept it for what it is. A pretty old rag with some stains on it. Unfortunately the only "proof" that religious people are going to accept is proof positive which will never come because it isn't there.
