Expect a few more coins in your pockets as you swig the cider at this summers BBQs because the proposed cider tax has been scrapped, which would have put the taxes on strong cider up 10% above inflation."The tax rise, which took place five days after the Budget, will now be scrapped and prices will be reduced on June 30. The Conservatives also prevented two other tax rises: a tax on phones and the proposal to scrap tax relief for furnished holiday letters, which should have come into force yesterday."-The Times
However, the Guardian reports another lose is the Libel fee cut "The justice secretary, Jack Straw, put forward plans to dramatically reduce the sums paid to lawyers who take on libel cases on a "no win no fee" basis."- http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/apr/07/libel-fee-cut-election-rush

English colonists came to America bearing massive quantities of apple seeds with the intention of growing the apples not to eat them, but to drink them. Successful apple orchards were established in Virginia and Massachusetts Bay Colony by 1629.
Hard cider quickly became the most popular drink in Colonial America. One of the main reasons of its popularity was because it was a great source of nutrients (not to mention the nice warm glow to mellow out) during the long cold winters days of being shut-in.
Even as late as the mid 1800s, hard cider remained almost twice as popular as beer. Only in recent years has hard cider made a comeback in the U.S.
