    • To all you southerners out there, just wanted to apologize for my previous comment about southerner intelligence.. I was drunk and completely out of line. I've met plenty of southern geniuses who are good people and I was wrong in my statements. Please forgive me all beautiful southern folk??

    • This reminds me of Philip K. Dick's novella, "Minority Report." Before you even commit a crime the government knows, right when you think of something "subversive" the government already knows. Why don't we just install a TV that can watch us at every moment and tell us what to do at all times? Oh wait too late...

    • "...two or more persons, which directly or indirectly advocates, advises, teaches or practices the duty, NECESSITY or PROPRIETY OF CONTROLLING (emphasis mine), conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States [or] of this State." Aren't we supposed to control our government? Isn't that the whole point of democracy? You have to register to work with the system? So we're just supposed to bend over and take it, is that what the message is? STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!

One could always start for them I suppose. I wonder if one is allowed to register for OTHER PEOPLE. Could be a great revenue generator. Don't like someone? Spend five bucks and have him listed as a subversive. More fun than a flaming bag of poop on his front steps and you can do it from home.

    • This is just like the marijuana tax in Texas - it's illegal to possess, but if you don't have your tax stamps on your bag, it's another charge they can add on to the list. Is overthrowing the government that big of a problem in SC???

    • Well, at least they didn't take it too far... Individuals who want to overthrow the government don't have to register as long as they keep it to themselves.

Wait, didn't the OK City and Unibomber act alone?

Um, I'm betting that law came from the republicans not the democrats. It's been a long time since South Carolina was known as a democratic hotbed. IIRC it's better known for it's low education levels, crushing poverty, and high rate of republican voting. It's amazing how those seem to go together.

    • By "subversive organization," the law means "every corporation, society, association, camp, group, bund, political party, assembly, body or organization, composed of two or more persons, which directly or indirectly advocates, advises, teaches or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States [or] of this State."

Damn South Carolina -- this means no Tea Party conventions or KKK meetings or "birther" rallies or Democrat or Republican National conventions can be held in your state unless they register with the Secretary of State....way to screw up your tourist attractiveness and tell your almost former governor off for traveling to Argentina to be with his "soul mate".

But I guess its a good thing it was Virginia that declared April Confederate History Month--because if South Carolina did that they it might have caused the governor further embarrassment and ethical hassles if he paid the $5 registration fee with tax payer money.

    • Irony--if I want to overthrow the government I need to pay the government and announce my intentions to overthrow them.

Also this is basically an incentive to make every effort to succeed in overthrowing the government because --if I only attempt it and fail-- I get arrested for not registering. But if I succeed they no longer exist and thus can't arrest me for anything.

Sounds like the US gov should register in SC.

    • this isn't a new law, we've actually had it since the 50's. trust me though, if anyone's planning a gov overthrow they're not registering and being from south carolina they probably don't even know what a subversive is.

If we didn't know what it was...why would we put it into a law. The definition is pretty much spelled out all over the article. It's to act on intentions of insurrection; or to plan to overthrow a government.

Also...I'm pretty sure the 1st Amendment protects your speech, so even if you did talk or preach it, there's nothing they should be able to do legally.
If protesters can use vitriolic signs at a marine's funeral, and be protected, so should everyone else.

      Not if it's true.

Let's look at the numbers. http://nces.ed.gov/naal/estimates
The states with the lowest literacy rates are actually the ones bodering mexico because they only measure english literacy. If it was english/spanish the numbers might be different. So if we rempve places like California, texas, Florida (borders Cuba, same issue.), and New York (contains NYC, immagrent central fo over a hundred years) As of 2003 SC's illiteracy rate was 15%. That's only slightly under the national average but remember we are removing the two biggest states both of which have illiteracy rates approaching 25%. So all of a sudden 15% doesn't look so good any more.
Now one interesting bit is how hard it is to find this data online. The official site doesn't even allow the states to be ranked in order, a point I find fascinating. We can, however, at least compare some states. Since this at least to some extent a republican/democrat thing let's try the most traditionally blue states. Minnesota: 6%. Maine, 7%. Wisconsin, 7%. Vermont, 7%. Less than half. Washington 10%. Illinos 13%, starting to get close, but it's not really all thattraditionally blue a state.
Now let's look at som traditionally red states also known for being "ignorant". Alabama 15%. Arkansas 14%. (Well they did have Clinton for a while) West Virginia, 13%. That's illinos numbers but they don't have a major city on the order of Chocago as an excuse. Tennessee, 13% again with the same caveat as West virginia.

      Looks pretty accurate to me.

You're not very constructive, are you? A country of 300,000,000 people has problems that need fixing, and you're just going to poo on the carpet? Perhaps the mindset that you are displaying is one of the many problems.

    • My first thoguht was: Are the "subversives" dumb enough to register? Because i know personnaly that if I'm trying to overthrow a country, announcing my intention to do so might be detrimental to my cause.
