Hong Kong - A Hong Kong couple slashed their wrists and jumped to their deaths in an apparent suicide pact, leaving their 10-year-old son an orphan, police confirmed Thursday.
Husband and wife Tang Kwok-chuen, 34, and Tsui Po-fa, 32, left a note saying they did not want to carry on living before jumping from the roof of their three-storey home Wednesday morning.
They were found dead on the ground by Tang's brother. Their son had been staying with an aunt since Monday.
Police said the couple had been experiencing money and relationship problems and had been receiving counselling since 2007.
The suicide is the latest in a spate of suicides apparently related to family problems in the city.
However, overall suicide rates have dropped in recent years following the introduction of a number of preventative measures such as installing barriers on shopping mall balconies.
The city of 7 million now has one of the lowest suicide rates in Asia, after Singapore and Thailand, with around 900 suicides in 2008 compared to 1,200 in 2003.
