Firefight in Afghanistan: Raw Video

mdirenzo
Four suspected Taliban insurgents ambushed U.S. Marines from the 36 battalion Lima Company on April 8 as the soldiers were heading back from a patrol near a village near Marjah in Helmand province. There was no causality among the Marines.

Marjah, a desert area of fertile farming land irrigated by canals in Helmand's opium-growing heartland, was billed as the last big Taliban stronghold in the country's most violent province. Thousands of U.S. Marines flooded into the district in February, joined by about 1,500 Afghan troops, while thousands of British troops conducted assaults to seize areas on its outskirts.

    • I hate when people push the blame on the troops. They are doing their job and do not get to choose where and what they do. They can not end the war themselves and even though we are portrayed as having a vast military there are not simply enough of them to end the war themselves and how can they are they going to rebel in Iraq nooooo. Also why not use overwhelming force getting shot at or getting mortared and having all that at your disposal why not use it. So maybe instead of blaming the grunt on the ground how about you blame the white heads behind the desk that took us to war. However do I believe the wars are even winnable no I do not. It is a repeat of Vietnam occupying hills helping a war torn community and a force that is willing to fight for a 100 yrs and have that ability because Gorrilla Warfare can go on for yrs.

    • I believe the public has every right to know exactly what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan. Also the I firmly believe that the previous Administration lied to the American public concerning Iraq and that the current Administration is lying about the true purpose of the AF-PAK conflict. But no video can accurate war and this video doesn't do the current conflict justice. We don't expect or care the American public understands what actual combat is like. Your opinions are valid and you have every right to express those opinions just don't think you understand actual combat from a quick isolated video. If you want this conflict to end, get involved! Write your Senator and Congressman, pay attention to local politics and how your elected officials are voting. Learn the true reasons why we are currently in Afghanistan and what the Obama Administration has planned for the AF-Pak conflict. Education about the issues not emotional charged rants are going to change anything.

If you want this conflict to end, mutiny. That's how Vietnam ended. That's the only way this will end. Short of that, fuck off. Nothing personal. I just have a problem spending one million every year for each of your sorry asses. A big fucking problem. Be a man and take some responsibility.

You mean people rioting in the streets of America? Is that the involvement you speak of? It ended because the troops had enough of the bullshit and stopped following orders en mass. When that happens the military breaks down ad there is no admission of mutiny. It's too embarrassing. That's the real history. Not the media crap that you get spoon fed.

    • Wow. These guys are amazing! Thank God we have these brave people fighting for our freedom against these incredible odds. Thousands of U.S. Marines, joined by 1,500 Afghan troops to find FOUR Taliban. I can't even count that many on one hand. No wait. Yes I can.

God knows where we'd all be if our country actually had to defend itself against an actual military fighting force instead of four gang members from the Afghan desert. I sure hope none of those thousands of Marines get hurt tripping over each other's asses.

    • Four? Ambushed by "four?" Is this a joke? That's not a firefight. There are worse gang wars going on right here on the streets of America! This is what we are wasting billions of dollars on?

No, I'm saying to call this a firefight is sensationalistic journalism and that I am tired of being lied to as to what this war is about and wasting trillions of dollars that could be going to give real healthcare to the sick, food to the hungry, and jobs to the unemployed. I don't wish it were worse, I wish it were OVER. We are only there to patrol poppies and pipelines as it is.

people like you piss me off a bit. here are two definitions of a firefight. a : a usually brief intense exchange of fire between opposing military units b : a hostile confrontation that involves gunfire. my wife is the army and this is the standard army definition. sorry your a bit bitchy about the title of the clip, maybe you had expected a bit more blood, maybe some more lives lost..maybe then it would be worth your money..and its funny how you talk so sure about what the true reasons are for us being over there..you have no intel..you are just a nobody.just like every soldier themselves..being a part of a military family you realize that the truth is a very hard thing to find. most of the soldiers dont even know the true reasons. govt is corrupt..always has been. but i would suggest you quit bitching about stuff and just simply appreciate a true glimpse of what it is sometimes like over there. your not the only one who wishes this war was over. actually..i really can't even think of one soldier who doesn't wish so. so just take a simple video for whats its worth. im sure if you were there you might call this a firefight. but because your home and safe, its easy to call this out. yah..maybe this isn't as intense as some video game scene..but its real. you should maybe be a bit more sympathetic...maybe appreciative?.

Great comment and I agree with you completely. This is one video which can't possibly convey the truth about modern warfare. You can never properly explain or express to anyone what it is like to be combat. Yes, your right many soldiers questions the real reason why were are still fighting and what is the true purpose of the AF-PAK conflict. The truth is hard to find and sometimes, being a soldier you can't afford to become obsessed with the larger, political truths behind something but focus completely on the accomplishing your mission. As far as video of the armed conflict goes this one is pretty lame and the more intense videos are generally found on pro-military websites.

"people like you piss me off"

Why? For having an honest opinion? Isn't lthat what they are supposedly fighting for according to the propaganda? MY RIGHT TO PISS YOU OFF? Spare me your fake piety. This war is a play for poppies and pipelines and has absolutley nothing to do with the socalled Democracy you all spout about to make people who know the score feel guilty about expressing that truth. Now if that pisses you off so be it. Such is democracy, right?

Should I be grateful for this?

And let's be real here, if the "Taliban" tomorrow stated they would allow the TAPI pipeline through without trying to sabotage it (which I am sure would raise the ire of Iran and perhaps others jockeying for position here) and allow the US to do whatever it wanted there regarding pipelines, resources, and poppies, they would then be the allies of the very people who now denounce them. The U.S. did the same thing regarding Hussein in Iraq in the eighties when Donald Rumsfeld went over there to shake Hussein's hand and give him mustard gas to kill Iranians. And then when he no longer wanted to play ball, he was then the "butcher of Baghad" and they suddenly cared about those he killed. This isn't about "democracy" or caring about the people they have killed, this is about GEOPOLITICS and countries jockeying for energy resources, and in Afghanistan as well, agriculture. And pardon me if I am skeptical of this video, because how do you tell a Taliban member and why didn't we see them in this video? Do they wear nametags? Or is the media as it did in Iraq just labelling anyone who is tired of our presence there and the reasons for it "suspected insurgents" for showing they want us out? DO YOU KNOW THE REAL TRUTH?

Your right about the U.S supporting whoever can guarantee the safe delivery of oil from the purposed TAPI pipeline. The fact is those the Taliban won't change it's basic philosophy and become in world commerce and trade. Just do me a favor and be extremely careful when you criticize soldiers in the field. Reserve your judgement for the U.S. foreign policy that got us involved in the AF-PAK conflict in the first place.

Right. Soldiers don't take responsibility for the death and destruction they do. They don't have brains. They are simply mindless pawns without the ability to think beyond the task at hand, which is blatant death and destruction to anyone in the way.
