Groups call for arrest of West Virginia mine CEO

A coalition of NGOs who say they are fighting against the influence of the US Chamber of Commerce has called for the arrest of Don Blankenship, the CEO responsible for the West Virginia mine where 29 workers lost their lives last week.

In a press release on Monday, StopTheChamber.com said Blankenship was "as criminally culpable as any mass murderer" for the disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine in Montcoal, West Virginia, because he had systematically worked to avoid safety regulations.

“This was not an accident, but rather the result of deliberate and intentional decisions and actions of Don Blankenship, a director of the United States Chamber of Commerce," said Kevin Zeese, a founder of the liberal-oriented Velvet Revolution, which runs the StopTheChamber.com site.

"Blankenship, with the lobbying army of the Chamber to back him up, has thumbed his nose at the Mine Safety and Health Administration, ignoring or appealing every violation, including the scores that resulted in coal mine evacuations and the hundreds of other serious violations," Zeese said in a statement.

Zeese added, "As the Washington Post pointed out in a Saturday editorial, these 29 deaths would not have occurred absent this intentional conduct of Blankenship. He is just as criminally culpable as any mass murderer.”

    • He won't be arrested . Good luck though . I am rooting for you . Make the unions strong again , and this will be prevented in the future . That is the only loophole they cannot slip through .

    • The citizens of West Virginia need to take their political leaders and representatives to task not only for these deaths, but for the fact that animals (and I insult the animals by making this comparison) like Blankenship are ALLOWED to get away with these types of violations, and much, much more.

The political leadership of the state of West Virginia has not only been complicit with the way big coal abuses and disregards the health and well being of miners, the politicians have helped to ensure that big coal gets away with this and much more. The politicians, together with big coal, keep the citizenry impoverished, undereducated and dependent on the whims of men like Blankenship who have no regard for the well being of the miners, and care only for the profits that make them wealthy.

What is the point of citing companies like Massey if NO ONE is enforcing? The culpability for not only these latest deaths, but the unending stream of black lung death rests not only on the shoulders of big coal, but on the shoulders of West Virginia's worthless and despicable politicians who have ensured that there are little to no options for miners besides marching underground to their own deaths.

    • This DEATH MERCHANT should be arrested and ordered to serve his sentence in the mine...Don Blankenship didn't give a damn about his employees safety, so he purposely neglected to correct all safety violations....His greedy actions have created twenty nine broken families......The deregulating of OSHA is the very reason why, this avoidable accident occurred..Republicans are directly responsible for the deregulating of OSHA and have remained speechless concerning this dreadful tragedy.......

    • If you preach accountability, this is it. Imagine forcing workers to work in unsafe conditions that cost them their lives...knowingly. Being cited over 500 times last year and doing little to nothing to fix the citations.

Hold the CEO's accountable and working conditions will begin to miraculously improve.

    • CEO's and Senior Executives should be held criminally responsible for their actions when related to skirting safety and environmental laws. Their policies dictate how companies will obey and adhere to ethical and legal guidelines to promote safety and a clean environment.

    • yeah he needs to be jailed this is too much if you decided to not follow the rules to take your car in for an inspection and it suddenly fails to stop and you run down 29 people at a park or a downtown market you will go to jail for it.
He did the same thing in ignoring the rules and regulations was a willful disregard for others he may not have wanted to get anyone killed but he knew that every regulation he ignored moved the miner closer to danger.
The idea is the same it had been the case that ignoring something as mundane as car safety inspections to save a few bucks resulted in a failure of control and in more than one occasion people were killed not all of them where a result of safety violation but the principle applies. If you can go to jail for ignoring stop signs or fail to comply with signal light maintenance then Mr. Blankenship is at least guilty of manslaughter if not murder through acts of willful negligence.

    • I didn't read anyone suggesting that we don't need regulation over corporation. What we don't need is a paid patsy--former corporate head--in the position of being a regulatory figure that is essentially owned by the corporation.

    • If you don't think we need governmental REGULATION of all corporations and industries, then I suggest you take your ass a mile down into a methane and coal dust filled hole and try to make a living. West Virginia deserves better.

PS "Clean Coal" has blood on it.

Umm the regulations already exist. In fact, Massey had dozens of citations issued against that mine. Your regulations don't work when politicians are owned by Massey.

Yet rather than just trying to enforce regulations already on the books, misguided people will call for more big government regulations.

    • We could learn from some other countries. In Japan there would be no question that he would be arrested and charged with a crime. In China he would probably be executed. Only in America will he continue living in his mansion thumbing his nose at the authorities. I use the word "authorities" very loosely!

    • Yeah, now that, officially, corporations are people with rights--he, among others, should be charged legally. They can't have it both ways. He's made it verbally clear that he knew he was in violation of many laws and did nothing to divert the unfortunate deaths of those workers. But, regulators should be held responsible as well.

It was cheaper to pay the fines than it was to fix the problems. He went the cheap route and people died. I think the mine should have been shut down by regulators, but I don't know if they have that power.. especially with this chode sitting on the board of the chamber of commerce.

I think West Virginia's Senators and Representatives should be arrested, their governor and all the rest of the liars, thieves and murders who run this state and turn a blind eye to the way miners are exploited.
