Heart of Dryness: How the Last Bushmen Can Help Us Endure the Coming Age of Permanent Drought

JanforGore
In the sixth installment of Heart of Dryness, author James G. Workman explores the traditional wisdom that has kept the Bushmen alive despite incredibly water-scarce conditions and how the national government threatened their existence. And as recent news indicates, the indigenous peoples continue to struggle for their land rights as Botswana’s government allows safari lodges to be built on the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

    • There are many survival tricks to gather water, a simple piece of plastic over a hole dug in the dirt will gather morning dew, all you do is place a cup in the dug hole and a pebble in the center of the plastic and in the morning you have a couple siips of water. Always works Dry stream beds and rivers usually have water underneath if you dig a few feet the soil gets wet and you can find some just little survival techniques taught to me during survival training 35 years ago

    • The court ruled it was unconstitutional to take them from their land (the reason being to build safari lodges no doubt to increase tourism and income) but then ruled their water could be cut off. They have had to learn to survive in this harsh environment without it, and as one man stated, the old know how to live without water, which to me is absolutely amazing.

    • This is really fascinating! Also -- what's the state of indigenous rights in that country? What's up with the displacement they're talking about in this clip? It's interesting that this video is playing on all the old anthropological tropes -- and then there are the constant references to Conrad's novel. Well, hopefully this video brings more awareness to the Bushmen and all that we can learn from them.
