ILLEGALS v.s. "Git-er-done" Arizona

Reporting from Phoenix and Tucson
For years Arizona's government has tried to deter unlawful immigration with a consistent approach -- make life for illegal immigrants so uncomfortable and uncertain that they will leave, or never come in the first place.
So this week, when the House of Representatives passed what's viewed as the toughest state law against illegal immigration in the nation, it was the continuation of a pattern that has been widely popular in the state.
"When you make life difficult," said state Sen. Russell Pearce, author of the current bill and earlier hard-line measures, "most will leave on their own."
There is evidence that is true. The number of illegal immigrants in Arizona dropped 18% between 2008 and 2009, the largest decrease in the nation, according to federal estimates.
"People are not going out to restaurants. They're afraid to do things with their families," said Sergio Gaxiola, 57, of Nogales. "The pressure has been building."
In 2007, the state passed first-in-the-nation penalties for employers who don't ensure their workers are in the country legally. The law led many illegal workers to conclude that they could never find steady jobs in Arizona.
Last year, the state made it a crime for state workers to give illegal immigrants unauthorized benefits, which scared many from applying for government assistance they are allowed.

I definitely empathize with the fact that most of the people coming into this country illegally are trying to support a family, and who wouldn't do the same in their situation. Its the reason most people have moved from one place to another throughout history.
The border has been mismanaged for a very long time. The local economies find themselves dependent on this cheap labor and at the same time, most Americans can't imagine working for the wages illegals will work for. Legal immigration should be easy, but done right to weed out the drug runners, and to give people who are only trying to better themselves. I'm all for preventing illegal immigration while streamlining legal entry into this country. - 2 years ago

I have an idea what if it was the other way around, what if we deported everyone of european descent, those with blue eyes and white skin back to europe. After all the europeans are the REAL ILLEGALS, because what they dont teach you at school that when Columbus "DISCOVERED" America he came and brought diseases to the natives, killed anyone that wasnt catholic, and pretty much wiped out the natives of this land. How can you "Discover" land when it already existed, people were living in these lands before the euros came and comitted their genocide crimes. So in reality this land that you all so defending and wanting illegals(those darn mexicans, those of brown skin) to get out of, dont forget their blood is tied in to the these lands, being that Arizona belonged to Mexico.
And you guys keep talking about how these "illegals" keep taking your jobs, I'd love to see the white man bend over for hours and hours and pick the crops of the season, I'd love to see the white man clean houses, or hell sell fruits at the exit of freeways instead of begging for me, that would be the day wouldnt it? But it'll will never happen because it's all crap, the white man is not willing to do that type of work.
Ignorance never fails to amaze me. For some reason we cant respect the fact thatt he hard working man wether brown or white is a respectable man, it doesnt matter where they came from.

You fail to comprehend that the Black American community suffers more from illegal immigration than anyone else. We directly compete with you because you are more likely to move into our neighborhoods than in with white Americans. With you comes crime and destruction. We had small problems with kids gangs in my neighborhood, but illegal immigrants brought with them MS13 which is a racist Hispanic gang that wantonly kills and terrorizes the Black community.
Also while you are on the topic of sending white people back to Europe, you should cut yourself in half and send half of yourself to Spain because you are descendents of Spaniards and not your own separate race

And you conveniently forgot that most Latin Americans are Also descended from European counties; "Spain, Portugal, Italy, etc..." Only Natives have the right to make your argument. So stop insulting them!
But what happened in the past, good or bad, is in the past. We need to deal with Today’s problems.
And if you want to see “White Americans” picking crops, cleaning houses, selling fruits at roadside huts, etc…, then just look around. I have seen many here in the Carolinas but they are becoming fewer. There are still many “White Americans” that do those jobs today and would be Many more if the jobs were not taken by Illegals.
You call all “White Men” lazy and unwilling to do hard labor. You are a racist! I cropped tobacco and cut grass Many times. Now those jobs are almost completely taken over by Illegals. I do not care about what race an Illegal is, they are here Illegally!
We need Major Immigration Law Reforms and need to allow Many more people to come here "legally", but we do not need to allow Illegals to continue to be taken advantage of by greedy businessmen. We need tough laws, mostly to stop businesses from continuing to give away American (White, Black, Hispanic, Native, etc…) jobs. There are Plenty of Americans ready to fill those jobs! - 2 years ago

Like the cycles of life on earth and your Organ systems it is all connected. During the 1980's we shifted from a company centered interest to a shareholder centered interest. In the good old days the adage was " a happy worker is a productive worker" to " whats in it for me" The Gordon Gecko philosophy at work and play.
The Elite Count oun your ignorance.
So what happens: they cut costs to show that they are artificially productive on the Market. that means slashing jobs, buying materials of inferior quality control, contracting out workers from other countries. These two practices also put off the customer. By sending out an inferioproducts and planned obsolescence. The customer goes somewhere else, like Toyota instead of Ford.
So what happens next, teh good stuff is over seas or expensive, the loss of jobs mean less money to spend. To protect the bottom line Agrabusiness, and other corporations and mom and pops,. hire people at or below minium wage just to survive. THERE ARE SOME JOBS BEING DONE IN THIS COUNTRY THAT AN AMERICAN WOULD SHUN.
The people coming to work in the mid and low income level wages are being taken advantage of in a way YOU the protestors would find reprehensible, I do not believe you would like to work 36 hours straight come back the next day to fin the same work and no pay coming to you.
And they are not aliens-that would denote them being form another planet-they are immigrants illegal or not- its sort of retarded to be specist when the Mexican, Arab, and you are all Homo Sapien Sapiens.
If there was not a need for these people then they would nOT COME or BE HERE. they are here to prove in a metaphorical way that there are not enough living wage jobs in this country- and if you want to live here and have a job- TO THE MARGINS YOU MUST go. I find that more reprehensible than the fact that there are Illegal immigrants to the Country.Economic Policy belongs to our leaders in Washington and your respective states. Here are the facts, from Santa Maria, CA, home to so many illegal aliens that you cant' swing a dead cat without hitting one.
They either do piece work (paid for number of cartons of strawberries or lettuce or whatever it is that they pick), or make minimum wage or a bit more. The big companies here pay at least minimum wage, it's the law. You see a lot of Escalades, Expeditions and Suburbans out in those fields, I've been told by a labor foreman that some of the illegals make over a thousand dollars a week, by working hard and picking a shitload of berries. I don't think Americans (or very few of them) are willing to work that hard. The main problem is false papers (the companies have no way to check their authenticity, except E-Verify, but they aren't willing to do that, because they would lose their workforce), no health insurance, so they overload the emergency rooms around here, no drivers licenses and no insurance, we have the highest hit and run statistics in the state, maybe the country.
They won't give them a drivers license in this state, I'm not sure about Arizona. So there are many, many unisured, unlicensed drivers around here, it's pretty unsafe.
The gang problems in this town are getting out of hand. It used to only be second generation Mexican/Americans, but the illegals have their own gangs now. The crime in this town is out of hand, mainly because of the illegals.
They are taking jobs from legal Americans. They are willing to work for minimum or slightly above, when a real carpenter is making $25/hour, and an illegal is doing it for $8.50, this becomes a major issue.
So Slarabee, I wish they would implement this law in California, the city that I own a house in is going down the toilet, directly related to the illegals, the state that I call my home is going down the toilet, directly related to the illegals, and this country is going to be lost, directly related to the illegals.
All in the name of cheap labor. Let the rest of us pick up the bill.

I don't think you should blame the illegal immigrants themselves, it's more the system as a whole. Businesses benefit from having this vast pool of labor and encourage the immigration. Not to mention the hellish political and economic system not only in Mexico, but in many central American countries.
I agree with you, that something should be done, but I don't think we should take it out on the people looking for better opportunities. I mean, when a person is offered a job, he doesn't say "well, somebody else may want this job, I can't," he takes the job.

We should penalize those who employ and exploit undocumented labor, not the laborers themselves, people just trying to get by and feed their families.
The problems comes from the instability in Latin America. If we want to stop illegal immigration, we need to help the countries we took/take advantage of.

The thing I don't get is why we cant just run this like Australia and New Zealand do where australia farmers have New Zealand laborers come and work all over the country for about six months and then they go home with a fair amount of money which in their currency is enough for the other six months back home. In other words keep the workers happy and they will protect the system for you cause they don't want illegals lowering their pay and rocking the boat.....the same way we keep all of us from just offing whoever for what we want ...because we have the promise of a good life with out the risk if we just play ball in the same system.
Second and I say this admitting I am a half breed European, but on behalf of my Cherokee lineage if you are not of 100% native American decent then shut your hypocritical mouth about "Illegal Immigration" Yours and my European ancestors wrote the book on showing up uninvited and taking other peoples livelihoods and home and land...Nuff Said. The Mexicans are not a monolithic people, they are as diverse as the Indians my White Ancestors fed whiskey and smallpox blankets to. And we in the US do not live on an Island. By our Politics we have allowed Mexico to continue as a static Narco State- so that they have little time to argue while we are raping their rightful resources behind their backs.
You the Blue Collar Man forget that in the 1970's during Nixon's tenure- The dismantling of the Manufacturing Sector and the Unions had begun and accelerated and ended during Reagan and Bush years. NAFTA too. I'm not forgetting the rest.
Point is, the demise of the working class has been a near fifty year car wreck in slow motion- put a frog in boiling water and it will die- put it in tepid water and dial the heat up slowly-either approach earns you a dead frog.
And now the process is happening again this time to the middle class. and in time you will have the Rich- and desperately poor or stressed worker easy for the picking and skimping on the paying.
Knock,Knock-Who's there? The Gilded Age Ma'am.
The Senate, Old Money families, and Party operatives want to implant the idea that it is the Illegal immigrants who are to blame- whereas there is ample documented evidence that this is their fuck up and has been alll along- but it is intentional- These people have not Forgotten this Whiskey Rebellion or both of the Roosevelt Presidents so I guess you can sit back and enjoy the ride. For those who are spouting out ignorance and hate speech- Your Rich White Brother is going to knock on your door and gut you if he has not already done so. You the ignorant are a tool for the powerful and the only reward you will reap is a pat on the head and a knife in the back by the very Cabal you worship.
The data and facts and history are out there. reading auguries, and expelling your ardor to Palin is not going to alter the reality to your tastes. Nor to mine. If I had my way. All of the Senators would be fired. And the Military Budget with the exception of Veterans Benefits and troop support will be scaled back to a healthy 25 % instead of 53 %
Thats right folks take all your tax dollars cut them more than half way and send them off because that is how much per dollar is going to the Pentagon and the Military Industrial Complex.
Might i remind you that the Soviet Union Collapsed because their Military expenditures comprised more than 2/3 of GDP we are at 53% and climbing. How about them apples, Johnny!

I Do believe that we need MAJOR Immigration Law Reform and we Do need to allow Many more people to come here “Legally”, but we should Not allow “Illegal” immigrants to stay here and take American jobs.
1st: "THERE ARE SOME JOBS BEING DONE IN THIS COUNTRY THAT AN AMERICAN WOULD SHUN." FALSE - There ARE Americans willing to do ANY job that is being done by Illegal Immigrants. True that “Most” Americans would not do just any job but there are “Some” Americans that Will do those jobs. I cropped tobacco when I was young. Why allow the Corporations to take advantage of Illegal Immigrants that they do not Have to pay a proper wage to and/or have proper working conditions for? Instead, force them to hire American workers to do the jobs. As far as Needing Illegal Immigrants to compete with their competition, that is a False premise because if ALL businesses were forced to hire Only Legal workers then there would be No Illegal competition.
2nd: The corporations that are taking advantage of the workforce need tough laws and regulations to rein them in. Through de-regulation the corporations have been allowed to take advantage of Illegal Immigrants by stating that they are doing so because they must do it to compete. If NO company was allowed to hire Illegal Immigrants then their cry that they Must hire Illegals to compete with their competition would be a False cry.
Our industries need to be Protected from unfair competition from countries that do not pay their workers a fair wage or offer fair working conditions.
Solutions:
Make Tough laws that would punish companies severely if they knowingly hire Illegal Immigrants.
Add tariffs to the types of goods that are imported from other countries that do not have a standard of living similar to ours if those goods are also made in America.
Make tough laws against using foreign workers from countries that do not have a similar standard of living as we do in order to replace American workers on the cheap. (This will be very complicated to do and will be fought vigorously by corporations with the old saying “We Have to do it to compete with other companies” which as I stated earlier is a False argument if All companies are held to the same standards.)
If a company is Based in America, then Any goods that They import from a country that does not have a standard of living similar to ours should have a Tariff imposed on them.
We need "Fair" competition, not excuses about needing underpaid workers to compete!

Why is this news? Pretty much the only voice of sanity in Arizona politics became Secretary of Homeland Security and now all the white male transplants from every other state and or country besides Mexico are in charge and can tell the Native Americans and both the legal and illegal Mexicans to shove off.
When I was at ASU in 2005 when they first proposed this crazy law--a student at "informational rally" about the new law said it best---Arizona doesn't give a rat's ass if you are illegal or not if your skin is not brown.
That and basically all this law is going to do is make the drug lords more money from their side business of stealing identities and forging "proper" immigration documents.
Also because I asked a friend of mine who worked in Immigration--the Mexican government established a waiting list to receive legal visas to immigrate to the US--if you are not rich enough to pay the bribe (and you don't get out bid)--you can be on the waiting list for upward of 35 years--whereas some "coyote" will transport you across the border for like $20.

But that is not the fault of the illegal immigrant -- its all the fault of big corporations that hire illegal immigrants and refuse to unionize and spend billions of dollars lobbying their state and federal congressmen to write and pass stupid laws like this instead of actually caring enough about their front line employees. It would be much more ethical to save that billion dollars in bribes and/or simply cut a few dollars off their million dollar salaries and pay that back into running the company so it could be run in an efficient and ethical manner. It's also the fault of investors from here in the states and around the world who don't want to take a small cut in their dividends if it means the price of production has to go up slightly to cover being able to hire legal American workers and pay them a living wage.

Well, the real victory here is imposing penalties on employers who high illegal immigrants.
We're not doing illegal immigrants any favors by allowing employers to abuse them.
And by illegally employing these people they are depriving the local government of money. The employers are getting slave labor, the illegals are being abused with low wages and lower OSHA standards...and everyone else is paying higher taxes because of the extra burdens being imposed on the public schools, hospital and police.
I don't support the "Kick'em All Out!" approach....but by not fully incorporating theminto our society via law enforcement we're not really doing them or ourselves any favors, are we?
Keeping millions of illegals hanging on in a bizarre shadow economy is only benefiting the employers who get acess to disposable below-market-value labor and it's hurting our public insitutions because we have more people using them an fewer taxes supporting those insitutions.
We're kind of at a crossroads here: either we do "kick'em all out" or we fully incorporate them into society and impose minimum wage laws and taxes on them.

I think the first step is acknowledging that we're not doing the illegal immigrants any favors by allowing them to stay here illegally and allowing employers to pay them below market wages and violate OSHA standards.
Right now we're employing a Half-N-Half strategy of keeping them as slave laborers (simply by not enforcing fair our own Labor laws) and simultaneously trying to kick them out in a random haphazard manner.
We've got to shit or get off the pot.
Either we figure out a way to fully incorporate these people into our labor and tax economy...or we try to kick them all out.
And since we're talking about tens of millions of people there is no realistic way to "round them all up" as the proponents of this idea claim.
If we're going to spend that much money and manpower to "round them up" we could just as easily use that exact same money and manpower to police construction/manufacturing sites to enforce Wage & labor standards after we grant amnesty.
Personally I'd much rather just force employers to pay at least minimum wage and TAX their employment as opposed to trying (in vain) to kick out 30 million people.
Basically: we can either spen $100 million dollars trying to kick them all out and get ZERO dollars back in terms of taxation or we can spend $100 million incorporating them legally into our economy (via policing and enforcement of employers) and get money back by incorporating them into the tax system.

I am Hispanic, and I live in Arzona, and I am afraid. I am a US Citizen, but from time to time, I get pulled over by the local Sheriff's department and I am asked to proof my citizenship. I am not asking people to support the illegality of border crossing, I am just inviting you to think about living in a place where you feel like you don't belong, and where scrutiny from offices of the law applies only when you are "suspiciously" brown. This law is wrong, and it is not what America stands for!

Do you like Arizona that much that you're willing to give your economic power and taxes to that state?

detained???you are making shit up as you go along??? this is not the dark ages anymore ...with proper ID i can tell if you are here LEGAL or ILLEGAL..
as everybody can see the reason why this shit escalated this bad is because of morons who seems to defend this kind of criminal act..threatening court battles and shit..YOU ARE THE PROBLEM...
now if you are so inclined to help these people like its a Christ like calling on your end,,its best served that you go after those assholes that run the country where these people came from..but then again you tend to idolize these assholes..These people are running away from oppression ..well solve the oppression from the source..if you grow some courage or balls to do so..

I wonder how many of them have jobs that have taxes taken from their pay...for benefits they'll never see. I think the government should focus on something more productive instead of scapegoating

I don't know if we'll ever know. For all intents and purposes, the people making the case against illegal immigration can make them out to be criminal parasites with little studies to prove or disprove.

I'm not sure if Arizona has the most ethical idea but it's functional. It would be an interesting 10 year study to see what the economic impact is for it's actual legal citizens. I'm happier when I see long term figures.

"Dig It"---
"The sweeping bill, SB 1070, passed by the Legislature on Tuesday makes it a crime to lack proper immigration paperwork and requires police, if they suspect someone is in the country illegally, to determine his or her immigration status. It also bars people from soliciting work as day laborers". - 2 years ago
