Of the more than 100,000 NYC women who engage in anal sex each year, only 23% use condoms compared to 61% of men who have sex with men.

The report also found that women who engage in unprotected anal sex get tested for HIV much less frequently than women who always use condoms during anal play: 35% versus 63%.

Unprotected anal intercourse is more frequent among younger females and those with many partners. 11% of Women 18 to 24 had unprotected anal sex compared to 2% of women 45 to 64. Of women with three or more sexual partners, 15% had unprotected anal sex in the past year versus 4% of those with one or more partner. Broken down by race, 8% of Asian...

      A catchy phrase or pic or whatnot catches wandering interest,....people click there,....most people then decide,....simply,...'.was that worth my time,...basically,...or not ' . They then vote "up" if even mildly entertained,...."down" if annoyed/disappointed,...but they were NOT interested,AND they spent some "coerced" time deciding...(they would rather have been amusing themselves with something else). IF it took VERY LITTLE TIME to decide,...they MOVED ON,.......and did not bother to vote. THAT is the primary group dynamic. Plan accordingly,....it just is,...the way it is.

    • I didn't vote this article up or down. Just left it how it is. If the community deems an article on the ratio of women to gay men who have unprotected anal sex to be important enough to (at one point) reach number one in the news, then I respect their decision.

      But I don't think much thought was really put into voting on this article. For some reason I get the impression the voting on this article was motivated by the repressed desires of sexually frustrated members who spend too much time on the blogosphere to get laid.

      Anal Sex

      Anal sex is stimulation of the anus during sexual activity. It can be done in several different ways: manually, orally or by anal intercourse.

      Anal sex can be the primary form of sexual activity or it can accompany other types of stimulation. For instance, couples sometimes include manual stimulation of the anus (either lightly rubbing the rim or inserting a finger into the anus) during vaginal intercourse. Others use the tongue in a similar fashion for oral stimulation.

      Anal intercourse is the insertion of a man's penis into his partner's rectum. Although anal sex is often thought of as a strictly homosexual activity, many heterosexual couples enjoy it too.

      Anal penetration can be pleasurable, but it can also be a source of physical discomfort. The muscle on the outside of the rectum, called the anal sphincter, ordinarily tightens if stimulated, which means that attempts at insertion of the penis, or even a finger, may be uncomfortable even if done slowly and gently. If penetration into the anus is forced, injury is possible. It is helpful to use a lubricant liberally and to relax and gradually dilate the sphincter by gentle manual stimulation before attempting penetration.

      Some people empty the rectum with a disposable enema before anal intercourse. Since the rectum contains bacteria that are capable of causing infection, anything -- fingers, objects, a penis -- that has contact with the anus should not subsequently be in contact with the vagina or mouth until it has been thoroughly washed.

      Some people have strong negative attitudes toward anal sex, whether it takes place between homosexual or heterosexual couples. They may think of it as being unclean, unnatural, perverted, disgusting or simply unappealing. It is sometimes regarded as the ultimate in depravity and has regularly been condemned by religious and secular authorities.

      Historically, religious groups have objected because a woman cannot get pregnant through anal sex, and these groups approved of sexual intercourse only for the purpose of reproduction.

      Anal sex was up until recently subject to legal restrictions in many states, even between married couples. In general these statutes refer to anal sex acts as "crimes against nature," going back to the view that heterosexual intercourse, with its reproductive potential, is the only natural, healthy, nonsinful way of having sexual relations. These laws are strongly biased toward the prosecution of homosexuals because penetrative anal sex is far more common among gay men than it is among heterosexual couples.

      It’s important to remember that HIV can be transmitted through anal sex, especially anal intercourse. The risk of HIV transmission is greater than in vaginal intercourse because the lining of the rectum tears more easily than the vagina. The resulting skin breaks and bleeding increase the possibility of the transmission of bodily fluids containing the virus that causes AIDS.

      Those who engage in either vaginal or anal penetrative sexual acts should use latex condoms, the best way to reduce the likelihood of HIV transmission

      Condoms are excellent for preventing the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Condoms must be made of latex, not lambskin or other substances, to prevent STDs.

      I think just because people aren't conceived out of anal sex doesn't mean it's a bad thing. By that same logic we should think that birth control, condoms, oral sex, and all types of sex (including homosexual sex) that doesn't create babies is wrong.

      As for the Greek and Roman empires collapsing because of hedonism, I disagree. They collapsed because of many other reasons. I won't debate you on that, because that is a debate you should have with a historian, who will most likely disagree with your statement. If there is one thing in Roman history that has never been answered its THAT same question. Thousands of books have been written on the topic of why Rome fell. Reducing it to its inhabitants having "unnatural sex" doesn't cut it.

      As for this story making it to the front page. You have every right to vote it down and consider it unworthy of the front page, although I remind you that every time you make another comment, it brings up its popularity, further increasing the chances that it will make it to the front page. The greeks were killed off mainly due to an abandoment of what made them strong, IE Athens and Sparta had each others backs, the islands had their backs and so on. When Athens and Sparta went to war aginst eachother they triggered the fall of their empire by leaving them without their traditonal defenses an resources. The Romans fall is mainly accredited to a variety of factors One, The emergence of christianity. Christianity was first seen as one of many cults during that time period, but their refusal to honor the Ceasar ment that rome struck back. They went extremly heavy handed on the Christians and normal romans turned from their governemnt to support them, some of who latter converted. two) Since they no longer elected ceasars, it was passed down father to son, they had a strng of idiots that made people dislike the government. Three) They became an import nation not an export nation. 4) The huns. Though the hordes did force the roman empire out of Europe, their main importance is that they are the final trigger that spelled that in carnation of the roman empire.

      On another note, yes AA women have higher rates of HIV/AIDS and that is ridiculous. We need to educate our youth and adults about how this occurs and why they need to protect themselves.

    • Women like to do it because its just naughty and kinky. As for unprotected anal sex: I think the majority of the women who do it do it with someone they've already had sex with before.

      It would be interesting to see the statistics for women who have unprotected anal sex with someone they've known for a day, as opposed to women who do it in a monogamous relationship. I would think they'd be more willing to do it without it if they have known the guy for longer, and have already had sex frequently.

      If that's the case, then I don't think it's that bad...

But if you know them and have been with them for a while, know they are healthy, and you have no problem with it, what's the harm?
