Island spent £600,000 getting rid of rats is now over run with rabbits

The tiny Hebridean island Canna which spent £600,000 ridding itself of rats has now become over-run with rabbits.

The last sighting of a rat on the island was some 4 years ago after specialist pest controllers were called in to banish them from the island.

It is now thought that the lack of rats is responsible for the huge surge in the rabbit population which locals claim are destroying local monuments and gardens.

They may have been great pest controllers, but they clearly did not know the first thing about food webs!
