GOP Candidate: "This is Alabama, we speak English"

joshuaheller
Republican Tim James is running for governor of Alabama on an English-Only campaign.

Will you really save money, will it really make sense?

Racist Anti-Immigration rhetoric is doing a nationwide tour.

    • It occurs to me to ask - there is no doubt they speak American English in Alabama along with other languages ... but one wonders if those who agree with this dubious gubernatorial candidate in fact speak empathy, speak compassion, speak Human.

That is, after all, the only language worth promoting.

    • A few years ago I decided to conduct some research on what the constitutions of Latin American nations say about Spanish. I was only mildly surprised to find that quite a few of them explicitly state that Spanish is the official language of X nation. A few even stated that it is the responsibility of the government to ensure that Spanish usage is promoted and defended by the federal government.

Mexico, ironically (or perhaps, not ironically, depending on your perspective), is NOT one of those. The only references to languages I saw there was in relation to the defense of Native American languages, and providing services in those languages for the native population.

I say "ironically" because Mexico is one of the proudest, most nationalistic countries I've ever visited, and their pride in speaking "good Spanish" is front and center. I never once experienced in all my travels and while living there temporarily any sense that the government would be even remotely willing to accomodate an English speaker. If you want to live there, you MUST learn Spanish or hire a translator. There are large colonies of expatriats in Mexico, especially the Guadalajara area, but to my knowledge it is expected that they function in Spanish or hire translators.

My point is that there is a clear dichotomy or double standard in what is expected FROM immigrants TO Latin American countries, and what SOME immigrants FROM LA countries expect when they immigrate TO the USA.

A few years back I experienced something that really angered me. In the Miami airport I needed to know what time it was (my watch battery had died) so I approached a car rental office and asked what time it was in English. The attendant did not understand "Excuse me, what time is it please?" But what really angered me was her attitude of being bothered to speak English. In Spanish she made an offhand remark to a coworker, asking her to answer this question, but in a way that clearly communicated her irritation at having to speak English in Miami. I immediately switched to Spanish and let her know that I had dedicated many years to learn Spanish so I could communicate with immigrants to our country, and it was not unreasonable to expect immigrants to learn enough English to be able to communicate with citizens in the United States if you had chosen to live there.

Just yesterday I went to the hospital and needed directions. I asked an Hispanic woman how to get to the emergency room, and the lady made a very valiant effort to give me instructions--IN ENGLISH. I smiled and let her finish. Then I switched languages and praised her effusively, what a great job she had done, she should be very proud, English is very difficult, and she had given me perfect instructions. The look of pride and satisfaction was a tremendous reward. She was SHOCKED that I spoke Spanish but it was obvious she was so pleased to be praised for her effort.

that's all we ask: just TRY

You make some good points about mexico not accommodating foreigners such as yourself but do you think that by sticking it to the immigrants that are here your somehow getting back at the mexican government for not being gracious hosts to you. two wrongs dont make it right. and im guessing that when you were in mexico it was much easier for you to afford a translator than for an immigrant here to get one. and your absolutely right there is a major double standard but it may be because the US is not a third world country but instead the richest country in the WORLD and arguably the best place to look for opportunity, and just so happens to be built on the backs of slaves and immigrants. I would recommend that you get over the lady from miami. staying angry for so long is bad for your health. but i did wonder if you speak spanish and she didnt speak english why would you get angry instead of politely asking in spanish? i guess you have a pride issue that wont allow you to lower yourself to speak anything other than english in the USA. well anyway in a perfect world you would get what you want but sorry guy its not perfect and your just gonna have to deal with it, look on the bright side you know spanish your already part of the X nation. as for the news are you sure it wasn't fox news. for your information a lot of times people dont TRY to speak english because they are embarrassed not cause of some secret planned defiance against the country or you personally. give them a break. and nobody wants unsafe drivers on the road but i just dont see the connection between not speaking english and being unsafe my parents dont speak english and have never been in an accident or even gotten a ticket in about 30yr in this country and they became citizens. its just not as black and white of an issue as you would like it. its more of a brown and white issue. we all just need to be more tolerant. opinions and laws that discriminate and alienate are not the solution they are making our problems worse im sure we can agree on that.

    • While I don't have a problem with States supporting Native American languages (The State of Alaska provides voting information in Iñupiaq, Central Yup'ik, Gwich'in, Siberian Yupik, Koyukon, and Tagalog, as well as English), I am not in favor of expanding services to foreign languages (which makes me wonder why Alaska does so for Tagalog, the Phillippean native language).

California DMV as one example provides driving tests in NINE languages. Just a thought: if you can't understand English well enough to read traffic signs, you might not deserve the privilege of driving.

However, due to the fact that so much of the American SouthWest was formerly part of Mexico (granted, that was about 150 years ago) and is so heavily populated by Spanish speakers and has been for hundreds of years, I again don't have much of an issue with providing some services in Spanish. Driving privileges should however be dependent upon a working English fluency (I don't care if one cannot argue politics in English, but for Christ's sake, you need to know what phrases like "Detour", "Slow, School Crossing", "Road Under Construction" and "Construction Workers Present" and "Fines Doubled for Speeding in Construction Zone" mean! If a potential driver cannot translate or explain those phrases, NO LICENSE should be given. And it's unreasonable I think to expect US citizens to have to learn Spanish to read the same signs.

States like Alabama have every right to insist that residents have a working English vocabulary for reasons of safety, if for no other reason.

One more thought: I've listened to Spanish language TV (I'm fluent in Spanish) and I've often heard the news anchors get the news 100% wrong and totally misrepresent the policies proposed on topics such as immigration and health care. It's no wonder the Hispanics run out in a frazzle to combat what they think will be laws that violate their civil rights: that's exactly what they are told in blatantly false and defamatory comments by their news reporters. So how exactly can one be a functioning citizen if one cannot understand what your elected representatives are actually saying?

In the mid west during the early 1900's you had to learn German. It was the language of commerce there.

He doesn't think he'll save his state money by only printing English versions of everything, he just wants to get the klan voters to say "yeah, make those sonsa bitches learn English."

    • Ideally, America ought to be a bilingual society.

And by this, I mean that all immigrants ought to learn English in addition to their native languages, so they can effectively function within American society, and all American native English speakers ought to learn foreign languages, so they can strengthen America's domestic security through international integration.

This way, you have Mexican immigrant laborers who can converse with mainstream society in a shared tongue, and you have American businessmen who can set up shop in Guangzhou and Shanghai to make America a part of the economic renaissance blooming on the other side of the world.

I have no clue what in the world you're trying to say. The first part of your post reflects that you think Americans are dumb, but apparently my suggestion to partially rectify this problem—that is, for them to be bilingual—is apparently "fucked up".

Or maybe you just don't know what "ideally" means. Try re-reading my comment. Take a good look at what the first word is.

      (Hint: It's "ideally".)

I think that would be a wonderful world to live in and where I'm from, most ppl are at least bilingual. My mom for instance, speaks 7 languages and its extremely handy. Growing up with someone who has been the gateway to other cultures and peoples has given me a unique and worldly perspective of our society. I don't know why people resist learning a new language so much... I think most of these "english only" americans (who actually can't even speak english that well in the first place) are just lazy whiners. America is a multiracial country, it has been that way since its infancy, and to deny it is to deny the history we should be cherishing.

On the other hand let's face it America is all about consumerism and not about pride of your country or heritage or principals.

    • I think everyone is missing the point here. I don't think it's racist. When my grandfather came over here from Portugal, was one side printed in English and the other in portuguese? No, I don't think so, he had to learn, so what makes "anyone" think it's "racist"? See, this is why this country is going downhill, because most people see it as a racist issue. When we go to another country, is one side printed in English for us??? I don't think so. I don't have any problem with people wanted to come to this country to try to get a better life for themselves and their families, but why do we have to accomendate them? Don't come over here to make the country change it's way for you, come here to make this a better country!!! Enough said. And if you don't like it, leave!!!!

No, it's not a racist issue - it's a misinformed one. The United States has never and will never exist in isolation from the rest of the world. "Borders" are mental constructs, not real ones. The planetary environment, the planetary community has great influence over American lives. There is no real separation. One can acknowledge it or continue to live in ignorance and denial. Also, the United States has always been mulitcultural and multilingual and still is. It's true, an americanized version of English - which has many identifiable dialects by the way - is the most widespread language in the nation, but it is hardly the only language and hardly the only language used officially and in the marketplace. Certainly, learning some american English to get about and conduct business within the United States is probably a practical thing to do, however, to insist that "english" is or should be the national language is a gross misunderstanding of the nature of the United States. A genuine understanding of American history shows the great accomplishment of the United States was to establish primacy of the individual over primacy of the state. This means maximum respect, liberty and justice for the individual rather than ultimate esteem granted to the state. Calls to create a "national language" is a step in the opposite direction intended by those who officially declared their independence and officially founded the nation.

Their intent is quite clear in their recorded thoughts both before and after the writing of the U.S. Constitution. some continue to honor their intent, others, like those who would call for a national language, do not.

Vulgarity is an essential HUMAN tool. Neither liberals nor conservatives, democrats or republicans, Americans or any other color of human have any "first claim" to it nor is any kind immune. It requires no more than the human ape's native talent and passion for grunting to make a point.

Of course, even pigs can do that and, perhaps on occasion, with better skill.

And, if you go back far enough, so were the Spaniards. One either abhors invasion of the homes of others OR one excuses all such behavior - not simply the one's you find personally agreeable. Invasion is either wrong or it is not. This is precisely the point needed to be made to Americans today who decry the "alien invasion". Their personal status as invaders may be long-lived, but it is no less true for simply having endured.

In my mind, this cry to "speak english or get the hell out" is simply a new generation's continuing agreement with the invader's mentality held by the monsters who originally imposed their will on lands and people not belonging to them.

Had europeans peacefully introduced themselves onto these lands, we would not be having this discussion about the enduring wish of invaders to impose a foreign language along with the rest of their foreign culture on people's who continue to remind them who they actually are.

The "american way" has more often than not been, if they will not voluntarily adopt your ways, physically compel them to do so. Nothing much has changed in that regard and this poor example of a human being who wishes to governor of Alabama is a shining example of it.

I am not talking about any state's war for independence, only about the state of mind the Mexicans are educated to have. Mexico elementary level history books tell of the USA stealing Mexican country and that they must fight to get it back. So if educated there these 'illegals' may have the desire to take Mexico's land back from the USA.

First of all the reality is There is NO Freedom in America!

Take your pink glasses off and notice innocent imprisoned, the next door neighbor can forever change your life with one phone call, pharmaceuticals are in control feeding our children legal drugs and children as young as 7 yo commit suicide, when a man is sent to a maximum security cell block for unpaid traffic tickets or non-payment of child support, when an innocent men will never recover from serving nearly 20 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, and when a mad woman falsely claims rape for financial gains or for the revenge.

If and when America can overcome injustice against own citizens and have compassion for American children then and only then I can feel compassionate for the people who clearly broke the law and wish to help America be the free country so many claim to be.

Now any immigrant who is chasing "American dream" should first follow the immigration laws, and are required to learn American history and learn English to pass citizenship tests.

ok so there is no freedom in america i can go along with that, but it is what this country is supposed to stand for right? so why not do what we can to work toward that. and yea when these corporations are making billions off of imprisoning people for any reason, and by convincing people that if they would just take this pill they will be all better then yea there will be a lot of what we see today. but that does not mean that we should turn a blind eye to those that are not citizens, by as you said not showing them "compassion". compassion should not be something that you hold back from anyone. if you care about one than you should care about all we are all humans dont forget that small fact. and if you had to choose between a better life for your children and an immigration law i would hope that your compassion for your children would lead you to say fuck that law and do whats best for you family. that is the decision these immigrants are faced with everyday.

    • Here is why it doesn't make sense to me. Because the test is about driving. It is not about English. If English were prerequisite to driving then English would be important. That's another debate.

There is a second problem with the logic. It would cost less to print the drivers test in various languages than to teach everyone English for a drivers test, although it could turn out to be beneficial for people to learn English anyhow - especially if we could learn to teach more efficiently.

What I find more interesting is that kids in Kuala Lumpur can speak better English than many people in Alabama.

That's a good point. Does Alabama have as many ESL classes as California has? Does the candidate support education as a solution or does he support deportation to fix it?

    • It does make sense to me, and I am not born in the U.S.A. But once we are here, it is our responsibility to learn the language, culture, and laws. Because I could be from China, Mexico, or whatever other country--but if I have a life here in the U.S.A. Then this is what I should adapt to, English is the language I should speak, not Chinese, nor Spanish.

If I enter illegally, and not even learn the language, then the law has more reasons to think I am here with bad intentions. However, if I went to school, learn the language, learn the culture, and follow most of the rules within the country, I simply have better chances, and better opportunities in the country. How complex is that?

This is neither business, nor racism. It is responsibility, people who enter the country should be responsible, and adapt to it. They come with a problem, and cause more problems because they are not responsible enough to even better themselves once they are in. They should go to school, educate themselves, and cooperate with their communities, too. Not expect miracles, and cause problems for a country which they migrated to.

But hide, and try to bring their flags, culture, and language, that is a little to weird. They never help in the community they live in, on the contrary they mess it up, like most black people do.

    • You have missed the point. There are a lot of people that live in Alabama who don't want the following activity going on: Just down the street where I live there are two houses with at least 20-25 males hispanics living like in a barracks. They are sleeping on the floors and using one bathroom...imagine that...20-25 using the same bathroom everyday..further at least 3 people have been killed here by a drunk illegal running over people and afterwards running away and if they get caught nothing happens to them....injustice.....the other day I pulled up to a 4-way stop and saw a car approaching from the side and it ran the stop sign like it wasn't even there...and you know what..bet you can guess...an Hispanic woman with baby in her arms and three more riding in car none of which had a safety child seat. If i would have ran into her and killed those kids, They would bury me under the jail...And they law here states if you have kids under the age of 8 they must ride in a child seat....I'm no racist at all one of my fathers figures is a Mexican, but enough is enough...learn the language, learn to read, become a citizen of the united states....or are you better than my grandmother who came here from Sicili and learned the language, learned english, became a citizen of the united states.......don't live 30 to a house just men...find a barracks to do that.....don't break laws that put us in jail and you get away free.........be able to read stop signs so you can keep living.....not much to ask a person to do.....a don't make me out to be a villian because I'm not going to vote for Tim James anyway and because I take pride in living here.
