Egypt Pumps Poison Gas Into Gaza Tunnels, Kills 4 People

By RIZEK ABDEL JAWAD , Associated Press

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Egyptian forces pumped gas into a cross-border tunnel used to smuggle goods into the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, killing four Palestinians, Hamas officials said.

Egypt has been under pressure to seal off the hundreds of tunnels that are a key economic lifeline for the blockaded Palestinian territory but which are also used to bring in weapons for the Islamic militant group.

Israel and Egypt have kept Gaza’s official border crossings closed since Hamas seized control of the coastal strip in 2007 from forces loyal to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who now only governs in the West Bank.

A Hamas security official in charge of the tunnel area along the border said the Egyptians filled the passage with some type of crowd dispersal gas. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to give his name.

The Hamas Interior Ministry later said in a statement the gas used to try to clear the tunnel was poisonous. Besides those killed, six people were injured, it said.

“The Interior Ministry confirms that the citizens’ cause of death was the Egyptian security forces spraying poison gasses into one of the tunnels,” the statement said without elaborating.

A doctor at a hospital in the Gaza border town of Rafah, Hamdan Abu Latifa, said the dead smugglers suffocated.

An Egyptian border security official refused to comment Wednesday.

Egyptian security forces have sprayed gas into tunnels before, according to Hamas officials and tunnel operators. But Wednesday’s incident was the first time people have died as a result, they said.

A Hamas official demanded an explanation.

“This is a terrible crime committed by Egyptian security against simple Palestinian workers who were trying to earn their daily bread,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum to The Associated Press. “It was a killing in cold blood. Hamas and all the Palestinian people condemn it strongly.”

    • Thank you mario_a for clarification. I would like to give some information on what we do at gpexaminer. I agree that some articles posted on our website contains fake information but they are not posted on news web sites. We only post true stories on news sites with referring to the source. Other stories, which include ficticious content or humor, are wether not published outside or only published in comedy/humor sections of blogs/news sites (as in Noah's Ark story that was published in current.com/comedy). Even the Noah's Ark story was based on a true foundation.

We are aware of what we are doing. If people think one sided or narrow, it is normal to get comments only critisizing the surface of the problem, as we do in most of the cases. Our disclaimer explains what we think of the common media sense in very serious world issues. We want everyone to think the other side of the story as well. What would he/she feel if things were the opposite (as in Israel and Greek Islands story), if everything developed the way that nobody would expect.

Nobody can claim that we have put anyone in target. We try to draw attention on the problems of the human beings only, without being on any side of any nation or religion.

Finally, I would like to apologize if we have caused any inconvenience for the current.com website itself or its moderators and editors. We will keep on doing what we can to at least make people think in a rather unusual way.

I would like to invite people to read deeper, think deeper and feel deeper before labeling someone idiot, stupid, boring or evil (as it was done by some people here to describe us or what we have been doing).

    • Hey everyone,

I thought it would be a good idea to provide some clarity here. Despite the disclaimer in about section of the GPexaminer site, our online editorial team validated this story before featuring it on our site. As you can see, this same report was filed by the same author on the AP wire.

Here is a link to the AP version from Google News:

      http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5i2OwvVtMEbi-0fGHvfQrwjk3rGvgD9...

This article from GPexaminer matches the first half of the story filed by Rizek Abdel Jawad on the AP Wire word for word.

Understandably, the disclaimer on the GPexaminer site is concerning, however we double check these things before featuring stories on our homepage in editorial positions. Here is the full disclaimer from GPexaminer:
"Articles posted on this website contains ficticious content. The aim of gpexaminer.com is to take people’s attentions on serious issues using exeggerations and possible scenarios.

We believe in things we see on our TV’s or read on our newspapers and favourite websites. We believe in things how they are presented to our minds. They have turned us into machines, programmed to forget and accept things very easy. We do not get shocked with the most terrible events hapenning in any part of the world. We see everything like Hollywood movies or computer games. Killing and dying make no sense any more.

We watch people getting raped and killed by our own soldiers and still believe that we are doing something good for those people. This is the exact way “they” want us to think and believe.

It is time for a change. Let’s write the stories again, let’s see other possibilities!!!

The names of persons and organizations can be real in the articles. Everything else on this web site is fictional. Please do not bother to sue us or protest us. You are free to critisize and send your comments."

I hope this helps clarify things a bit.

"Despite the disclaimer in about section..." that's not a disclaimer. It's a claim.

They claim that they deliberately fabricate all or part of the articles they produce. They want a disclaimer they say what they mean.

If it's on the AP why are you using these guys as a source?

(heavily edited, I initially misread the above post)

There are a few things that influence what gets featured on our homepage, and in reference to this story popularity factors in.

This article was the most popular story on Current this morning, which certainly makes it eligible for featuring. We took a closer look at the source before featuring, and once we'd validated the source we placed it in Current Stories.

The person who posted this story selected the link as the source, and the community played a role in making this story popular. We verified that the story on the source link was credible before featuring, but had there been a more popular version of this story with a more credible source we would've opted to feature that version instead.

      Hope this helps!

    • NOTICE: THIS IS A FAKE NEWS ARTICLE.

STATEMENTS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED HAVE BEEN DELIBERATELY FALSIFIED BY THE WRITERS TO ADVANCE THEIR POLITICAL AGENDA.

Saladin was the one who pointed this out to me but i think it can;t be sressed enough here.

      *addendum*

Oh fascinating! Look who posted the article!

this article was not added by a poor sod who believed them but by the website itself. Even though they know they are producing false articles they are deliberately inserting them into news blogs as real news.

This is a seriously reprehensible business model. Actually attempting themselves to get their stuff thought of as real news advances this from the sardonic political commentary they claim and into the realm of classic soviet style propaganda.

This site is a whole big giant bowls of wrong.
there are all sorts of nefarious ways a site like this can be used. One that comes to mind is to get a rep for posting only false information, then when there is something one wants to cover up you can publish it straight and have everyone assume it is a lie.
Another could be to post news stories on a site whose credibility you wish to destroy.

I have become very very curious about just who owns and controls the gpexaminer.

hmmm... Zero contact information. just a mail form. No ownership, nothing. The only thing to do is track their metadata and call their ISP. Wouldn't surprise me if that is a brick wall. Looks to me like these folks know they are doing wrong.

I'm pretty sure most Gazans know what's happening to them. Cast Lead was a pretty good reminder. What the internet would be good for is to help show them that there is international solidarity for their struggle, since the way Israel is allowed to do anything it wants shows a different picture.

im %100 positive that a society (arab or otherwise) that is denied free speech knows only what the govt tells them (hamas) or what they independently seek.
its like saying that israelis know whats up with all gazans cuz of the rocket fire they get daily.
solidarity doesnt put food on the table or saline in ivs, the internet will benefit them in knowing the difference between what israel wants and what hamas tells them israel wants.

i cant get the video on here but search in you tube for hamas mickey

i generaly am very cautious about branding anything as racist or anti-semetic cuz i know how many forms of it arent understood by the people doing it. the hatefull scream at the top of thier lungs how im just overly sensative and the claim of ant-semetism is bullshit.

notice that the story here is what EGYPT did in reference to EGYPTS border, yet if you read the comments the majority of comments refer to israels treatment of gaza wich has no bearing on the story at hand.8 directly rail against israel who had no involvement in the event.from conspiracy theorists (organ harvesting) to angry politicos (palastinians have no land) every chance to bash jews is seized like an unwatched keg in a college town.

but antisemetism isnt why when egypt gases gazans israel is bad right?

They're pretty easy to dig for one thing. This is not the first time the gas has been used so I suspect it is not normally lethal. I find it interesting that the exact gas is not mentioned.

Perhaps they were trying to clear the tunnel of people before collapsing it?

    • So once again the rest of the world takes its cue from us silly Americans and figures they can basically do whatever the hell they want to their illegal immigrants because Arizona said they can demand papers and our senators are talking about deporting "anchor babies". So why not take the next logical step and simply gas the people who are crossing the border illegally--it's cheaper--it's more effective--and it is a natural progression down the slippery slope the fringe Republicans are taking our country down--Seriously--its a fact--Republicans of late--endorse Nazi policies. And Glenn Beck's has actual been captured on video and in print channeling (and dressing like) Hitler and FOX news has basically become a white supremacist propaganda outlet.

So yeah--without looking like complete hypocritical idiots how are the Republicans and FOX and our government going to condemn this act?

I guess Current answered my question--the way to get out of having a serious discussion about the extremism our country and the rest of the world is going through with regard to racial profiling and hatred of "the other"--is to say sorry it was all a fake article and the poster is a "socialist" or "progressive" or "communist" or to say we're sorry this article was ghost written and posted anonymously.

how is it that egypt has to follow regulations on its border and jordan, syria, and gaza do not. egypt has the ability as all these border countries do to adhere to israels peace agreement to the degree they want, egypt adheres to thier best interest just as these other countries do, wich makes none of them puppets.whats gunna happen if they dont syria and jordan are going to side with israel?
better border ispections would be ideal but a method of doing so doesnt exist

they smuggle weapons in trucks marked clothing
israel halts and checks all clothing trucks
      they switch to food trucks
israel has to stop and check all food trucks in addition to clothing trucks
they switch to smuggling in vehicles marked red cross
israel adds that to the list along with clothing, and food trucks
so on and so on until thier is no transfer of goods to gaza that isnt suspicious
its the same principal that makes getting on a plane here excessively slow
first it was metal detectors then luggage scan now shoes and shampoo

if the terrorist element didnt embed itself within the civilian arena this could all be avoided
just the same as the dome of the rock is protected by israel
the idf doesnt allow jews to pray there but as a result the lack of attention to what should be a holy place of worship allowed palastinians to use it as a weapons wearhouse last yr.

all of these things should be off limits but they arent. the important question is who is creating this situation and who is dealing with it.israel is dealing with it egypt is dealing with it jordan is dealing with it but hamas is creating it
