Sad cat giving his dying friend a cardiac massage video of the day

richjm
I... I... have some dust in my eye, or something. Back shortly.

"This stray cat was filmed in Turkey trying to reanimate his female friend who got hit by a car. Even though some people tried to help him, the white cat wouldn’t let them come near for two straight hours. Finally a vet arrived and took the injured cat. Sadly, it was too late and he couldn’t resuscitate the feline."

    • i would be surprised if the female was not in heat, otherwise she would have taken care not to get hit by a car. I love how the white cat is kneading her to try to get her up ...how painstakingly sad.

    • to all the bleeding hearts out there. the white cat DOES attempt to mount the dead cat, if you watch out around 51 seconds in you will see him lower his hips and try to thrust. anyone who has had a male cat should know what im talking about. he also attempts to mount again near the end as shown by him biting the female behind her neck and kicking with his back feet.

so while yes, he is trying to rouse his mate and keeping her company. he is also STILL trying to have sex with her.

this doesnt detract from the sadness of the video and the kneading probably isnt related to him trying to mate with his dead partner but those two parts i pointed out are without a doubt the mannerisms of a cat trying to get it on.

    • Okay, for one who has had many cats (all of them from rescue programs and taken off the streets) That cat is not showing any signs of mating. We can make many guesses, but I think it's simple the white cat is kneading the other cat, which is a sign of affection that cats display to objects and living beings. The other cat, poor thing, is not responding, and the white cat is grieving. Like most animals do grieve, but humans don't notice because we have our heads stuck where the sun doesn't shine. Elephants bury their dead, and any number of species, mourn their dead babies, and refuse to accept the fact their babies had died.

And PS Cats will purr when in pain as well as when they are happy... Who says that the kneading is for happiness?

    • Animal evolution; hang out with humans and they start to take on our traits. Expression of grief requires a sense of self and others. This was once thought to be the difference between the animal world and our own. Like the videos of the dog retrieving another from the rooad where it had been struck, it begs the question; are they changing?

    • No one knows what that cat is actually feeling, unless ur an animal psychic? What i'm tired of is people speaking for animals. I watch the vid and it makes me sad, what isn't sad about a dead cat? or the idea of another cat losing it's friend?

    • Apart from the fact that this may show a cat trying to "get some" from a corpse (as some people here are suggesting), the most logical explanation (and that is what we should be looking for under all circumstances) is that this is a typical display of "kneading", an activity common to all domestic cats whereby, when in a state of contentment, they alternately push out and pull in their front paws, often alternating between right and left limbs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kneading_%28cats%29). Yes, you read that correctly: when in a state of contentment.

What ROYALLY pisses me off are overemotional people trying to interpret and/or explain animal behavior by narrow-mindedly fitting in into their personal emotional framework and coming up with irrational "explanations" as suggested by the majority of the commenters as well as the title of this article.

Try to use your brains instead of your hearts for once (although technically speaking, emotions originate in the brain as well). Whenever I read crap like this I die a little bit more inside due to the lack of rationality displayed by my fellow humans. Thanks for an additional facepalm moment in my life.

Sorry, but you don't sound like an expert on animal behaviour and emotions yourself, and your conclusions didn't sound particularly rational. Why would a cat show contentment when its friend/companion/whatever gets hit by a car? Cats, as other animals, are known to grieve when someone close to them dies and that is just a fact. Perhaps you should educate yourself before accusing other people for being narrow-minded, as I think you were being just that..

And mating? For one thing, that looks nothing like mating to me, and again, I find it very unlikely that the first thing it would do when its friend dies is try to mate with it.

For me the most - yes, logical - explanation is that it's in a state of shock and grief, but why exactly it seemingly massages its dead friend before laying aside it I'm not sure

    • This video is 100% about the music. Put "who let the dogs out" behind it and you'd see this for what it is: a cat trying to fuck another cat's corpse.

The behavior I saw was one a kitten does when beginning to suckle. To get the 'let down' from the mother's mammary glands a kitten 'fluffs around the nipple. They will then begin to suckle and purr. Cats may sometimes carry this whole behavior over onto 'thing' that they become 'emotionally' attached to (a blanket, a persons clothing). Cats will jump up on their human they are attached to for feeding, petting what ever, the one they depend on for 'life'..... the cat will then do this fluffing on or near the 'master' before they sleep. It is a sign of trust and attachment. The white cats hind quarters were leaning up against the tire of the car on the right side. I think this is the reason 'he' had a slight hunch to his spine. My cats always fluff somewhere near one of their humans before they catnap.

    • The power of music on the psychi. It is only the soundtrack that makes this sad. I am a cat lover but unfortunately I can see that the male cat is clearly attempting to have rudies with the dead female.
It is characteristic for the male to bite the back of the females neck and the back feet are moving in that manner to try to obtain a good foothold.
Take out the music and you will see it is just male cat instinct. At least this will stop people feeling sad and lodging the image in their heads. Sorry

It is true that music plays a huge part in the emotion of the video, but that isn't just the instinct for a male cat to mate, that is one of the very first instincts they learn with there mother. It help the mother to nurse the kittens by helping circulation and bonding. and the curling of the tails before he lies down next to here is an emotional connection that means he feels connected to her.
You are correct about the music, but i am sure you will agree it is still a sad video...

    • Shit I have heard of dogs showing that kind of affection but I always thought cats were cold blooded killers. This just shows that even the coldest heart of stone has blood flowing through it

    • That was tough to watch.

Another reason why I am a vegan ...
Have you ever been to a slaughter house and hear the animals that are going to be slaughtered cry ....
I know it sounds crazy, but I swear they know they are going to die - and in their own way are begging for their lives.

if only they were able to Get Up, Stand Up and use their front arms to defend themselves..

BTW, while touring costa rica i came across a slaughter house. on one end of the farm was the slaughtering, at the other end was a barn with pleasant sounding music.. the unharmed cattle were all hanging around the music barn... while in the background there were squealing and yelps from the slaughter barn; it was shocking.

ps i now eat only berries, fruits, vegetable, nuts & grains; only special sacrificed meat for special occasions.

This doesn't proove that cats care about humans we all know that dogs are mans best friend if u get trapped with ur dog he'll stay with u and die but if u gt trapped with a cat he'll stay with u and wait until ur weak enough for him to eat u. I think like it's already been said is that this cat was really horny and just wanted his bit

sure, i respect your opinion, and agree that dogs are very loyal to humans, a cat wouldn't stay with a human in that situation. True. I do find it a very sad video though...

    • Turn the music down and try watching it. Absolutely incredible. This has to be the most heart felt video that I've ever seen on Current.

Animals teach us how to love unconditionally.

Adopt a pet and welcome him or her, into your home. Treat that pet as if it is your best friend, and you'll be amazed at the love you receive in return.
