"For 37 years I was involved in the war on drugs," said Jones, 63, who was raised in Los Gatos.
He was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam, then joined the San Jose Police Department in 1970, the year after President Nixon declared the war on drugs.
"As police officers on the streets, we didn't see any problems with drugs," he recalled.
But as the federal government gave grants to enforce drug prohibition, police forces signed up. Jones joined the Narcotics Division in 1974 and worked undercover, infiltrating the drug world with results that made headlines and took the local dealers off the streets.
"We knew someone would take over," Jones said. "And the Nuestra Familia moved into the void in San Jose."
The fight was frustrating, he said. "When I arrested a robber or a rapist I made it safer. With a drug arrest, I just made a job opening."

yes; You might be right, Cannibis is in your opinion harmless. But when you look a the DOT stats just for the last four year the rate for accident involving death and drug usaseage was at least 42 % out of tthis 42% at leastst 12% were found to have been using both pot and booze at the same time. Anouther five% were found to have just used pot. I have worked in a position where I have seen the devistation caused by drug usage. It is not only to the deaceased but to the family and freinds of those who died because of a lack of good sense when someone deicides to use and get behind the wheel of a car or truck. Just because someone wants to feel high does not give them the right to involve others.

its not my opinion its a fact proved by science. nobody dies on cannabis...60 million people use cannabis on a daily basis.....there are bound to be accidents..but go to the er on any weekend and see who comes through the door.....drunk people......that all you got.....5 percent of people in accidents are stoned...sounds like a safe demographic.\

It usualy is not the user who dies but those that he connects with. Family vans full of children. Older people, and others that have nothing to do with the habit. yes I include those that booze themselves into a stupor. It is not right to count on people to move out of your way for a bad habit. The user is usualy to relaxed to know when they have hurt someone.
