BBC say comments from the Red Cross confirm the US airbase in Bagram "contains a facility for detainees that is distinct from its main prison"-BBC

The story emerged from 9 prisoners at the base, who accused the US military of holding them at the base, while using techniques like sleep deprivation. Other reports on this story include family members not knowing where people were being held and beatings during arrest.

On the 15 April, a Guardian story reported that the UK military were accused of transferring prisoners to a Bagram without telling the families in Iraq. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/apr/15/terror-suspects-afghanistan-bagram

The BBC asked The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) about Bagram and heard "that since August 2009 US authorities have been notifying it of names of detained people in a separate facility at Bagram."-BBC

A US military official for detentions in Afghanistan states only Parwan Detention Facility is the only detention centre used, in response where he denies the Bagram prison accusations.

    • Any situation where the government is behind vanishing people is too 'v for vendetta' for comfort.

in other words, family members should always be notified and told the truth.

    • So this prison was a secret UNTIL 2009? This also has to do with British prisoners. The Guardian is a British paper and if you read the report, these detainees were caught by the British. The US has been notifying the families, finally, to where their relatives are. And also, the President isn't fully informed of EVERYTHING the military does.

With that said I don't exactly know how I feel about secret prisons however. Secrets prisons are something that was used throughout history to oppress. Ugh.

Minnie rant. And you (plural) bought old Obama's dribble. Well, let me tell you about pixies and perpetual motion. Slap my butt and call me Oprah (Ms. PT Barnum of the new age freak show. At least PT gave the freaks a cut of the action). Just because you think he has a nice smile, he means what he says? Check his record on backing off on the banks. Not to mention that piece of shit medical reform he pushed through. It is tough when you barely have Jesus left to turn too. Obama is not going to take care of business. He is business. Or were you just being facetious? In which case, carry on.

    • the sad thing is that this doesn't shock and disgust us anymore. it's almost like we've just come to expect that our holier than thou military operations have some human right violating aspect to them. case in point, at the time of this posting the "how to spot a masturbator" article has more posts than the one about the secret military prison.

    • Shades of Terry Pratchett.
You really should read the "Night Watch".
It makes you wish there really was a Sam Vimes out there somewhere helping to balance out the mad "Corporal Swing".

Did you ever expect to find out that "Swing" was an American?

I'm with vicgal, "how secret can it be if Red Cross knows about it?"

So let's send Martha Stewart there and she can do a piece on "How even rendition-ed prisoners can grow an herb garden." More theater for the American mindless. What the hell do you think we are doing over there? "Same as it ever was." This is not a noble war. This is occupation, baby. Oh yeah, exporting democracy. How do you export something you do not possess? Peace be with your atrophied minds. Just think twice about reproducing another ugly American.

The Red Cross is actually quite good at keeping secrets. It is part of the great political game to ensure that the bad guys don't get charged with war crimes.

But the Red Cross gets slammed regularly because this is seen as coopting their role as an independant organization..

My father (WW 2) hated the Red Cross because they sold donuts (not gave them away) to the soldiers in the trenches. He used to rant about that on occasion. I am liking tangents today. Loved trigonometry. Best part of math.
