AP poll: Dems likely to retain majority...barely

People want Democrats to control Congress after this fall's elections, a shift from April, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll released Saturday. But the margin is thin and there's a flashing yellow light for incumbents of both parties: Only about one-third want their own lawmakers re-elected.

The tenuous 45 percent to 40 percent preference for a Democratic Congress reverses the finding a month ago on the same question: 44 percent for Republicans and 41 percent for Democrats. The new readout came as the economy continued showing signs of improvement and the tumultuous battle over the health care law that President Barack Obama finally signed in March faded into the background.

"To the extent that Democrats can focus on job creation rather than health care, they tend to do better," said Jack Pitney, a political scientist at California's Claremont McKenna College.

Democrats hold a 254-177 majority over Republicans in the House, with four vacancies, while Democrats control 59 of the Senate's 100 seats, counting support from two independents. Despite those disadvantages, the GOP has gained political momentum in recent months and its leaders hope to win control of at least one chamber of Congress this November.

Compared with the last AP-GfK poll in April, the survey showed Republicans losing some support among married women, a key component of many GOP victories. Democrats picked up ground among young and rural voters.

    • I wouldn't bet on that, after they passed Obamacare against the will of the American people. There's going to be a lot of unemployed people in Washington after November. Count on it.

They never have when they have lost them before, what would get more of their cooperation now? Apparently even the severity of crises don't seem to get their attention.

Maybe if something were to happen to their campaign contribution they would take notice? It is the only thing that seems to be their focus But how would that take place when it is part of the problem?

    • All I know is that I will do what I can and cast my ballot. The numbers seem to be changing, and its all coming down to be a big showdown.

The Dems just need to retain the majority and the Republicans want back at least one chamber of Congress.

    • dems are likely to retain majority cuz of the tea party. its not quantum physics or even complex electoral math.
just as over the last 30 yrs dems struggled to win elections because 3rd party candidates split thier tickets, now its the exact same thing for the republicans.

    • Obama snoozes while the Gulf oozes. What if W was still president?? The hypocrisy of the left is one giant, spit-polished turd. How do you sleep at night??

And hell no, you can kiss your "majority" goodbye this November and for the next several generations.

and what is the alternative to the snoozing you claim?
what is super pres supposed to do fly around the earth in reverse to cause time to go backwards to before the leak?

I love the way people like you want to blame Obama for the direct results of the Bush/Cheney nighmare years. In case you haven't been keeping up, your man Cheney was responsible for the deregulation that created this still uncontainable gulf disaster, after Bush literally snoozed and Condi bought shoes during the last gulf disaster, so get your facts straight before you start dishing out the blame here...and I wouldn't count on upsetting that Democratic majority too much, most Americans can read, and they are learning, very quickly, to turn off their TVs.

No, that was only what McCain wanted people to think, that was why he crowned Obama "The One" in his campaign commercial.

Fortunately it only proved that McCain was old enough to know Moses but only watched the view from De Nile

The only peoplethat fell for that ad were those that were foolish enough to be left behind to build the Pyramids

They certainly don't think what McCain wanted them too, since if they did McCain would be president so that whole "The One Messiah" fiasco was a failure.

Well George Bush was shit, now it seems Obama, Messiah or not, is no better. What do we do for a third choice? I'm totally open for suggestions. What do you think?

    • Well, looks like the choices are vile. People pout them up there for a reason, "help us outta this jam' but it seems that doesn't matter to them. Unless everyone gets a slamming job security and excellent health insurance, they're prob. out.

It doesn't seem to have done them much good since even with the Super Majority the Democrats haven't been able to get much accomplished

As Jon Stewart mentioned "They seem like the kind of people that could switch to Geico and LOSE money"

It not like they could ever get organized enough to actually USE a majority.

The truly tragic part is that SleepDirt has a point and the alternative is far worse, but is very slim comfort when things need to get done.

Don't we need something a lot more practical than what the Tea Party has proposed? Something that will be more effective?

    • kennymotown:

I'd agree with that, but what is a practical way to "give them hell" that will work better than what the Tea Party has been trying?

What method won't be co-opted, distracted, bogged down or corrupted before it can accomplish anything?

Even back in 1972 Robert Redford showed how difficult it was even if you believed in reform and doing the greatest good in The Candidate, it's gotten 100 times harder since then

Since the loss of Kennedy's seat they no longer have the filibuster proof majority and they were able to pass the healthcare measure and will soon be passing financial regulation reform. Are you even watching what is going on?

    • So far so good . I , frankly , don't care what they called themselves , as long as they aren't owned by the corporate world and don't owe any favors to 'em . Best Idea wins .

    • This is good news considering 6 months till election day and most people vote their pocket book and the economy is slowly turning good. And you are correct what is the alternative?
