Rand Paul's Civil Rights Act bombshell has set the chattering class on fire. Last night on Rachel Maddow Rand Paul, son of Ron Paul and GOP nominee for the US Senate from the state of Kentucky, made the outrageous assertion that he would oppose parts of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Appearing on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" Rand Paul argued that while racial discrimination should be forbidden in the realm of governement, it should be tolerated in the private sphere. For example, Paul thinks it is fine if a restaurant owner refuses to serve African Americans, or a gas station owner reserves his bathrooms for white folks only. Paul argues that while he himself does not favor racial discrimination, he believes it is the right of the business owner to discriminate or not discriminate.
