A dire report prepared for President Medvedev by Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources is warning today that the British Petroleum (BP) oil and gas leak in the Gulf of Mexico is about to become the worst environmental catastrophe in all of human history threatening the entire eastern half of the North American continent with “total destruction”.
Russian scientists are basing their apocalyptic destruction assessment due to BP’s use of millions of gallons of the chemical dispersal agent known as Corexit 9500 which is being pumped directly into the leak of this wellhead over a mile under the Gulf of Mexico waters and designed, this report says, to keep hidden from the American public the full, and tragic, extent of this leak that is now estimated to be over 2.9 million gallons a day.
The dispersal agent Corexit 9500 is a solvent originally developed by Exxon and now manufactured by the Nalco Holding Company of Naperville, Illinois that is four times more toxic than oil (oil is toxic at 11 ppm (parts per million), Corexit 9500 at only 2.61ppm). In a report written by Anita George-Ares and James R. Clark for Exxon Biomedical Sciences, Inc. titled “Acute Aquatic Toxicity of Three Corexit Products: An Overview” Corexit 9500 was found to be one of the most toxic dispersal agents ever developed. Even worse, according to this report, with higher water temperatures, like those now occurring in the Gulf of Mexico, its toxicity grows.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in discovering BP’s use of this dangerous dispersal agent ordered BP to stop using it, but BP refused stating that their only alternative to Corexit 9500 was an even more dangerous dispersal agent known as Sea Brat 4.
The main differences between Corexit 9500 and Sea Brat 4 lie in how long these dangerous chemicals take to degrade into their constituent organic compounds, which for Corexit 9500 is 28 days. Sea Brat 4, on the other hand, degrades into an organic chemical called Nonylphenol that is toxic to aquatic life and can persist in the environment for years.
A greater danger involving Corexit 9500, and as outlined by Russian scientists in this report, is that with its 2.61ppm toxicity level, and when combined with the heating Gulf of Mexico waters, its molecules will be able to “phase transition” from their present liquid to a gaseous state allowing them to be absorbed into clouds and allowing their release as “toxic rain” upon all of Eastern North America.
Even worse, should a Katrina like tropical hurricane form in the Gulf of Mexico while tens of millions of gallons of Corexit 9500 are sitting on, or near, its surface the resulting “toxic rain” falling upon the North American continent could “theoretically” destroy all microbial life to any depth it reaches resulting in an “unimaginable environmental catastrophe” destroying all life forms from the “bottom of the evolutionary chart to the top”.
Note: For molecules of a liquid to evaporate, they must be located near the surface, be moving in the proper direction, and have sufficient kinetic energy to overcome liquid-phase intermolecular forces. Only a small proportion of the molecules meet these criteria, so the rate of evaporation is limited. Since the kinetic energy of a molecule is proportional to its temperature, evaporation proceeds more quickly at higher temperatures.
As over 50 miles of the US State of Louisiana’s coastline has already been destroyed by this spill, American scientists are warning that the damage may be impossible to repair, and as we can read as reported by the Associated Press News Service:
“The gooey oil washing into the maze of marshes along the Gulf Coast could prove impossible to remove, leaving a toxic stew lethal to fish and wildlife, government officials and independent scientists said. Officials are considering some drastic and risky solutions: They could set the wetlands on fire or flood areas in hopes of floating out the oil. They warn an aggressive cleanup could ruin the marshes and do more harm than good.”
And to understand the full import of this catastrophe it must be remembered that this disaster is occurring in what is described as the “biologically richest waters in America” with the greatest amount of oil and toxic Corexit 9500 set to come ashore in the coming days and weeks to destroy it completely for decades to come.
Reports are also coming from the United States that their government is secretly preparing to evacuate tens-of-millions of their citizens from their Gulf of Mexico States should the most dire of these scientific warnings start to come true.
To the greatest lesson to be learned by these Americans is that their government-oil industry cabal has been just as destructive to them as their government-banking one, both of which have done more to destroy the United States these past couple of years than any foreign enemy could dare dream was possible.
But to their greatest enemy the Americans need look no further than their nearest mirror as they are the ones who allowed these monsters to rule over them in the first place.

My question is, why choose to use a TOXIC dispersant ie. Corexit that disperses and sinks, creating deposits of poison on the sea bed? Surely this product not only constitutes as a sinking agent but also as a HIGHLY TOXIC SINKING AGENT? Alternatively, Black D is NON TOXIC and 100% FLOATS when in contact with oil. Please can Ms. Leigh DeHaven from the EPA clarify? Check out Black D Oil Spill Response

I think our first mistake... and an arrogant one, at that... was to think that we were too powerful to become extinct.
This is the FINAL warning. We need a resource based economy. We have to throw away our system and start again. As an engineer... it's important to realize when my approach is wrong and needs to be started over from scratch. As tough as it may seem... sometimes this is the only solution. Hybrid cars and biofuels are temporary and childish solutions to the problem of the survival of all of mankind. We need HUGE leaps, not baby steps. Fuck the red tape. You'll see me protesting, and I'm already selling my car.
If anyone wants to organize some demonstrations or community works in Northern California, please send me a message and maybe we can come up with some ideas of where to start. I build permaculture (aquaponic gardens with fish) systems in my spare time and am willing to give lessons or help you build one free of charge. Get in touch with me on here. I'm in northern California.
If we don't ALL OF US... take VERY drastic steps to ensure our survival by stopping the evil regime that allowed this to happen (corporatocracy)... this will mark the true beginning of the mass extinction of the human race which is actually already lined up. Our planet will only put up with us for so long. The ocean is already on the brink of collapse with rising acidity... our food is becoming too toxic to eat... microorganisms being bred by improper monoculture farming are becoming unstoppable and airborne... I fear that this will be humanity's darkest hour. Don't just talk about it, anymore. It's time to act.
If you're interested in acting, send me a message... I'm in NorCal.

What's up with all the removed comments... is anyone not in agreement that since no one knows how to stop a oil leak underwater no one should drill anything it until they find out? Lets not forget the effect of carbon emissions, what's the upside to this drilling, it is inevitable we no longer use oil it's going to run out its nonrenewable, best used to make asphalt, tires or lubricants instead of waste it as a a source of energy when we have so many more prettier ones, plumes of black smoke and gray smog is not cute!

(Venus, Florida - May 12th, 2010) On the Gulf Coast of the United States the shock is now setting in for millions of American citizens as we now realize the true extent of the damage caused by our desire for obsolete and dangerous fossil fuels, and our perpetuation of an outdated monetary world society, where the bottom line has always been profit at all costs, be it human or environmental. It is time for a viable solution to deal with a system hardwired for self destruction.
It is with that very unfortunate introduction that we, The Zeitgeist Movement, now must enter the international conversation to express the need for true change. That word is not some jingoist slogan devised by a focus group, but the evident desire of the public for a meaningful transition out of the destructive legacy, the burden of our past mistakes as a maturing civilization. We only have one Earth; there is no reset button here.
We must break out of our established ideologies that have prevented progress. Ending the political duality, economic stratification and false divisions is key to overcoming our apparent historical bondage that says the future we were promised must remain an elusive dream. We must now rethink our society and outgrow those parts of it that serve to paralyze us.
As of Friday, April 30th it was reported by CBS News (US) that the spill had spread to cover 2,100 square miles and was still spilling at a rate up to 5,000 barrels (210,000 gallons) a day. As of today, there has been no progress in stopping this catastrophe. This did not have to happen. It happened because we continue to use an obsolete technology for the sake of maintaining a profitable establishment. An establishment that perpetuates vast inequality in its wages to its employees versus its core owners, destroys fragile and vital eco-systems, and pollutes our air.
It is time for real change, not empty promises. No amount of socialism or free market ideology will save us from ourselves, there needs to be a fundamental re-write of what we think we know, to achieve a sustainable human enterprise.
Our generation has stood and watched as our planet has been raped and pillaged, yet we do nothing. Our generation has stood and watched as our government bailed out the very people who created this economic crisis, yet we do nothing. Our generation has stood and watched as our rights have been stripped away from us, and yet we do nothing. Our generation has stood and watched as we have been handed the problems of the countless generations before it, and we are preparing to do the same to the next generation, and we do nothing.
Let us be the first generation to hand solutions to our children and our children’s children. But we can’t do it alone. Let us break down the barriers we have created amongst ourselves. We need all of you, every last one, to say enough is enough in one voice. Not as Americans or Russians, Christians or Muslims, but as fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. Let us destroy the lines between us and work to create a world where our children are truly safe and free. Let us create a world where we can tell our children that they can be and do whatever their heart desires, and know deep inside us we are telling them the truth. Let our generation be the one.
We have the tools, we have the knowledge, we have the technology. It is time we make the transition to a world, an economy, and a future we all deserve regardless of geographic location or economic disposition. As long as we rely on legacy systems defined in a 19th century mentality all we will do is spin our wheels while a parade of economic and ecologic disasters visits us again and again. It is time to pull the plug on this charade because as you will find out, there is a better way.
We, the Zeitgeist Movement representatives, reach out to you so that we can all work together to do what must be done. Every man, woman and child has a voice, but together we can create one voice so deafening that no one will have a choice but to listen. But it requires you. It requires you put away preconceived notions you have been told about “the way things are” as if it is the only way, because it's not! Our way of thinking will no longer sustain us. We can either remain in the house of cards we have built and watch it collapse all around us, or we can, through the best our society has to offer, begin to construct a stable mature and thriving society so that the Gulf Coast Oil Spill, the Exxon Valdez and many others are nothing more then an embarrassing footnote in history.
The choice is yours.

The report was prepared by the Russian Ministry of Natural resources for President Medvedev. It’s in the first paragraph. I don’t believe anything that comes out of that ex commie propaganda factory. A year ago the Russian government predicted that the US would break up into multiple states as a consequence of the financial crisis. I don’t know if they actually believe what they say, or if they know that it is propaganda. All that is certain is that any government reports coming out of Russia that have anything to do with the US are garbage.
Even if it did come from a credible source, predicting “complete destruction” for much of North America is farfetched to say the least.

We've already had Haiti in multiple earthquakes, quakes in Chile and some biggies out west too. Plugging that leaking pipe with instant concrete might be like sticking your finger in a rifle barrel somebody pulling the trigger.
The Doomsday Clock needs to be moved closer to 12.

The dispersant used is only about 60% effective at best, there are other dispersants that are MUCH less harmful and up to 100% effective, but the board members of the company that make Corexit are also on the board of Exxon and BP. They will try to make money all the way to the end, until their last breath, or ours.

I can't say as I agree with this scenario. The assumption seems to be that Corexit will evaporate at a high enough concentration to do damage. Given the variability of weather conditions, currents, winds, etc methinks this is unlikely. Additionally the primary constituents of Coreexit 9500 are as follows:
Distillates, petroleum, hydrotreated light : Irritant
Propylene Glycol : Exposure Limit, Eye irritant
Organic sulfonic acid salt : IrritantPetroleum distillates are hydrocarbon solvents produced from crude oil. These solvents include mineral spirits, kerosene, white spirits, naphtha, and Stoddard solvent. They are commonly used for degreasing, as paint thinners, rubber manufacturing etc. They degrade over time and are toxic if the concentration is high enough, i.e. if you drink naphtha you'll get pretty sick. Petroleum distillate vapors are regulated by things like permissible exposure limits (PELs) and time weighted averages (TWAs). These are concentrations that you can safely be exposed to for a specified period of time, without any effects. Given that they Corexit isn't used in a confined area where the concentrations could build (like a building), the likelihood of receiving a large toxic dose is pretty much zero percent.
Propylene Glycol is antifreeze which does not readily evaporate (that's why we use it in car radiators).
Sulonic acid salt isn't know to be particularly toxic. Also given that it's a salt, would not likely be conducive to evaporation. It seems to me that if there is any way of spreading this stuff it would be via something like sea spray which would limit it to the coastal areas. And even at that,it's questionable whether a sufficient concentration would be deposited to have any significant impact on anything.
I'm not defending using this stuff (mainly because it contains petroleum) but based on my limited knowledge, I don't see any serious impact to human health or the environment (on land). Still, it does contain petroleum distillates and don't know what the impact to ocean based life would be. However, given the situation out there, the amount of petroleum contained in this stuff is the least of their problems.
My point is that there is no reason to get paranoid based on an article that's short on facts and big on speculation.

You drink some; spread it on your skin too. I'll watch to gauge how harmless it is. It's the least I can do. We'll record the results for you to review uhm much later.

My friend, I deal with these scenarios all the time. You are a greater risk when you fill your gas tank (inhaling benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, and aliphatic hydrocarbons) than you are from this stuff. "Risk" is often a matter of perception and the perception in the case above is way out of whack.

I'm a shallow breather friend Mark, which makes your kneejerk reply wrong. Perhaps a shorter woman carrying a baby ~with her increased inhaling down nearer the gas tank~ maybe so. Your agenda is showing.

My "kneejerk" reaction is based on 23 years of experience dealing with chemicals and their potential effects on the human body. As I said, risk is often a matter of perception and what I stated regarding gasoline is 100% accurate. Just because you don't view gasoline as a risk doesn't mean it's not. Conversely assuming Corexit IS a risk is just as wrong. I would be interested in hearing what you base your opinion on.

You listed the chemicals separate from each other and gave your assessment of each one. Several of them you merely called an "irritant". That's asinine => Propylene Glycol is one of the most poisonous substances there is.
You also tried to -and you're still trying to- swagger your way around. In the real world we encounter many mixtures of chemicals, and they are killing mankind and killing the planet because of the synergies they form. You glossed over it and, apparently, were trying to BS your way around it.
So now you're just a j**k with an agenda.

To my knowledge Denica it's fairly impossible to load a cannonball into a constantly-firing water cannon, oil cannon or any kind of cannon. They would have to mix the concrete so dry it would set up before they had time to shove it into the cannon, er pipe. It's an insult to even suggest such a thing is possible. The concrete nearly set up would have to be propelled into the pipe at the same or greater speed [and pressure behind it] to sit there in one spot and go solid. Plus stick to the slick inner pipe walls.
Whatever happens it should be quite a show. heh heh Plugging a firing cannon. That has light oil aka WD-40 on the inside walls. hahahaha I think JanForGore said it best when she said Keystone cops.

Consuming approximately 330,000 barrels of oil per day, the DOD is considered both the “largest government and individual petroleum user” in the US...and these are outdated figures.

I don't subscribe to your using a strainer on posts. I judge for my own self what's valuable or not, not whether somebody else likes it. America has had a wealth of authors and actors using invented names. Nobody complained about that.
Nor do I find this sensational. It's awful.
Does this BP-caused disaster represent the end of an Age? Very possibly.
