This disaster is demonstrating in a very visible and large way the evil nature of what the entire petroleum industry has become. It is the greatest menace to our world at the present time....even greater than global terrorism, totalitarian communism, and HIV/AIDS....COMBINED.
WAKE UP PEOPLE....we need to put a stop to this madness or we are all going to become just like these birds.

CNN Breaking News - 06-01-10 - 3:35PM PT:
A strand of oil came ashore on Petit Bois Island off the Mississippi coast, Gov. Haley Barbour's office says.
So very sad, because we know this will now affect all the land life here.

It's starting already. I wouldn't be surprised to see the effects as far North as New York, once the hurricane season starts. Also, ocean currents are probably going to send it South toward Brazil and the East coast of S. America. Then we're getting into the rainforest. That's just my personal conjecture though. I can't begin to imagine the amount of total devastation worldwide. What I wouldn't pay for a time machine right about now.
I've been trying to take a break from the coverage because it's so depressing but I can't help but read anyway. I don't really want my degree of outrage to subside.

Sadly, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Since many of the dead birds showed no signs of being oil covered, this means that the oil spill is having a direct effect on the food web. It's certainly not unexpected though, especially given the sheer size of the spill.
What's more disturbing is that these are figures of a single organization. It does not take into account the animals (avian and non-avian) that were not retrieved or reported. The spill is utter decimation of an ecosystem on a truly unimaginable scale.
The long-term effects such as breeding success, migration nutrition, suitable habitat, inland water quality, fish mortality, etc, are going to be the deciding factors in concluding whether the clean-up regiment was effective.
I'm trying to have hope that these species will, somehow, be resilient enough to make a full recovery in the future. Much of their existence depends largely on our diligence.
They can start throwing the book at those responsible any day now...we're waiting.
