Smoking Pot Doesn't Affect the Way You Drive

The researchers found there were no differences between the performance of marijuana smokers and those who were given a placebo in either the simulator's baseline driving segment or its collision-avoidance scenarios. In fact, the only difference between the two groups was that the subjects who got the real stuff were more likely to decrease their speed during certain parts of the simulation.

See this is the type of study I was talking about that was needed to determine the validity of laws restricting smoking marijuana and driving. there is not at all the same impairment of motor function with marijuana that there is with alcohol. Brovo maybe now they cant hassle us when they legalize Maijuana. Great post!

If you're a sh*tty driver to begin with than it's not gonna matter whether you're sober as a judge, you'll still be a sh*tty driver.
This study wasn't saying "Now it's safe for everyone to go smoke a blunt while driving a truck" But it's undeniable that there is functional use of marijuana and the functions extend to everyday tasks, like driving a car.

It depends on the individual, pot will affect people in different ways. Also the fact that these high people were in a study means they were focused and paranoid about their driving, unlike on the road when they could be more easily distracted.

It's probably about as safe as driving on Vicodin, or Valium, or other legal drugs, or just being tired. It's definitely much safer than driving drunk because when you're drunk your balance is off and you have false confidence, whereas I don't think most people's balance is thrown off by pot, and it can make you a little "paranoid" so you are apt to be more careful and drive more slowly.

As much as i'd love to believe this, I don't. I drive WAY slower when I'm stoned so I don't do it.

Welllllllll...I'm not so sure about this. I know that I'm comfortable enough to drive after smoking and have not had any traffic violations while doing so, BUT I have a few friends that get bent and have been known to cruise through red lights (which did result in a crash) and disregard stop signs. Majority of those friends aren't the best drivers sober so that could factor in as well, but it defintely does effect your driving depending on the amount consumed.

I am all for changing the classification of cannabis, but I do not promote reckless abandon of our driving laws. Running a red light, not stopping at stop signs is not acceptable, whether one has consumed cannabis, or not. I just think it's wrong, if the only way they could tell I consumed cannabis, is by checking my body fluids. Unimpaired drivers should not subjected to drug tests, which do not reflect degree of impairment.
Group punishment for everyone who consumes cannabis, because some are reckless is not the right direction.

not a surprising find, but this SHOULD NOT encourage people to try it.
it's just like any other intoxicant, you should drive when not under the influence!but above all, it remains harmless compared to how many people have killed countless others because of drunk driving.
i don't think this should be used in any argument supporting legalization, it just sounds wreckless, like we believe we can truly function normally in all situations when high. leisure and medical purposes need to remain the main focal points, as well as the statistics on alcohol-related deaths, but not how marijuana may be better to drive with.
Ambien will make you trip out or alter your mind too, as well as other legal drugs that can have unexpected side effects. now i'm all for complete legalization of cannabis, but driving doesn't need to be done when under the influence of anything.
we're smart enough to realize this (contrary to what some of you believe) and we know it's safer than drunk driving, but let's not make it a voluntary activity just because of facts like these, more valuable truths exist about marijuana, like its healing powers, diverse usage possibilities, and its history.
keep those in mind and we'll get somewhere!

oh god... you can call me elitist for this but if you're going to try and argue with me please learn how to spell "you're." You spelled it wrong four times in a single sentence.
And you guys can fight all you want to stop the demonization of pot smokers, but it'll always happen as long as you people continually insist on endangering people with driving under the influence. Yeah I know this article says one thing but the comments here say another, and if one person drives worse while high then no one should be allowed to drive while high. That's just fucking dangerous. I don't want people with impaired reaction times and not at their best piloting 2000 pounds of steel 60 mph around children. Ever.
And driving too slow or missing an exit, although it's not swerving in and out of lanes like drunk drivers would do, is still abnormal driving behavior that can lead to accidents. So I'm sorry if I'm not super thrilled about everyone's reaction to the findings of this unsavory study.

Exactly. It may be safer to smoke weed but it certainly doesn't make you a safer driver. I can vouch for this personally. I am a terrible driver when I am high. Look at any pothead's car and tell me the rims aren't riddled with curb-rash. It affects everyone differently. I have friends that are ok (just ok) drivers when they are high, and some that are terrifying. These are people that are normally good drivers when sober. It may not be all that scientific but it's a pretty good deduction given the ratio of potheads with fucked-up cars.
That being said, I seriously question this experiment's results. Pot is, by far, much safer than being drunk but this is a bit of a reach.
Now everyone in here hates me, heh.

I don't drive when I am high. I think driving high is a bad idea. Although with that said, I would rather face a driver loaded on weed than one loaded on booze. Weed tends to make one cautious, and thoughtful. Booze tends to turn people into reckless dare devils.
