The latest buzz is that Betelgeuse, a red supergiant and the ninth brightest star in the sky, is about to go supernova in the next few weeks or months. It seems as though every few months we're subjected to warnings of some new disaster that threatens to destroy us. What is the reason for our strange obsession with doomsday?More details and links at the URL below:

To be honest I hope Betelgeuse does go supernova. It's too big and takes up too much space.

The star is 500 light years away! Even if it did go supernova it would take 1000+ years to reach us. Plenty of time to get away. (Unless supernovas can go faster than light, which is impossible according to Einstein the fastest we can go is probably not even 1/10th of the speed of light.) When (or even if) the explosion were to reach us, all of us would be long dead by then.

IF I understand correctly, we here on Earth experience time in relation
to what time is. I've watched the Science channel's documentary mini series
Time, as narated by Dr. Mitchio Kaku, in the episodes Lifetime, Earth time,
Cosmic Time, and one other episode. So IF I understand correctly, all
humans on spaceship Earth experience time in accordance with how fast
the Earth hurtles through space. We can measure it by witnessing the seasons.
But since Time=Space, which is why they call it space/time, the relative
length of time the Betelgeuse supernova radiation takes to reach us will
be as long as our lives are relatively short. So obviously, unless there's
some cosmic phenomenon that can fold space in between it and us, no
it won't matter because we'll all be occupying the boneyards long, long, long
before then. Kind of underwhelming, huh ? - 2 years ago

Haruki_Hirasawa:
Let me clarify.
Betelgeuse is over 600 light years away, that means when we look at Betelgeuse tonight, that light was generated and left the star over 600 years ago. All of our observations of Betelgeuse are based on this 600 year old light reaching the Earth. So, when we observe the supernova, which will make Betelgeuse look hundreds of times brighter than it already is, we are observing a supernova which occurred over 600 years ago.
So, odds are, Betelgeuse has already gone supernova, but we're still waiting on that light to reach us here on Earth. And no, it won't kill us. Maybe we'll get some more cosmic rays, but the only things that are in danger are our satellites. Keep your eyes peel and get ready to enjoy the brightest thing ever in the night sky.

Despite that, a supernova's remnant explosion being around 1% of the speed of light. (It seems I overestimated the speed of the explosion) We could see it from 600 years ago, but it would still take a about 50 000 years to reach the Earth. I guess the only dangers are the rays that will be given off by the supernova, which should be absorbed by our atmosphere.

Given the world we live in today, who wouldn't want to look for some end?
Oil spills destroying our environment, natural disasters destroying nations, collapsing economies because of stupid greedy people in the banks, shady secretive groups that seem hell-bent on controlling the masses, corporations that are killing us through the stuff we buy, the inevitability of SOME kind or war/s, whether it be a religious war, a war in the Koreas, civil war in any number of nations...
And the worst part is - from my perspective, anyways - it feels so beyond anyone's control.

We have always been in the brink of the end of the world.
Back in the old ages of 900, people thought the apocalypse would come
then on the 1500's
then on the 1700's
then on year 1900's
then on 1930's we thought aliens would end us
then on 1940's we thought war would end us
then on 1950's - 1980's we thought nuclear war would end us
Around the 1970's we thought the apocalypse would come too (a lot of people killed themselves during those "end" times)
on 1990's we thought asteroids, disease, war, WMDs, or that asteroid that hit jupiter would end us.
On 2000 we thought the world would end. Even with Y2K or apocalypse AKA Teh Return of Jesus
On 2000-2010 WMDs again, disease (H1N1 flu), war, Enviromental Disaster (an inconvenient truth), Oil Peak, Polar Shift, Economic Disaster, Zombie Attacks, Sun Flares, Earth Core, MegaTsunamis from MegaEarthQuakes... And now... OilSpill.Oh and of course. On year 2012... we will all die.
If for some reason we survive,
then on 2018 a sun flare will burn us all...soooo cheers!

I think we're just naturally dystopic as humans, constantly afraid that our fragile world will crumble around us. I like post-apocalyptic stories, but the real-life apocalypse stuff is ridiculous, and even IF the world could end at any moment...what are we gonna do about it? I'm just here for the ride, and when it ends, it ends. I don't want it to end, but if it does, I can't stop it and I won't care. Fearing every single potential disaster our planet faces is pointless. Just enjoy life and stop worrying about it ending.

I have noticed that when the economy is bad, people up the chatter about dooms day. Maybe it’s a kind of natural psychological downward slide, depression feeds more depression until you get people thinking of and believing in dooms day. But it’s just my hypothesis. I also think many religious institutions use dooms day scenario as a way to exploit the fears of the feeble minded, and make a buck. It would be interesting to see if Europeans with their bad economy are less inclined to religious practice, have levels of dooms day hysteria equal to Americans who have religion ad nauseam. I also think giving up when things are bad, relieves stress. Believing in the unavoidable end, brings relaxation and tends to bring people closer to their friends and families, and the things they enjoy. It’s a live for the day thing. Anyway, just speculation, free association, hedging closer to being full of it here.

Immanuel Velikovsky's theory of "Collective Amnesia" simply states that mankind is in a state of amnesia, not remembering their past and the catastrophes that affected global humanity in ancient times, which were related to the generations through myth, the original meaning and purpose being lost in time, man now expresses these cataclysmic events through subconscious perversions that range from sadomasochism kinkiness to thermo-nuclear warfare.
That explains our strange doomsday obsession in a nutshell, but it doesn't explain the endless fear-mongering propaganda. For that you must research the New World Order and how fear is a tool to control populations. What really will happen in 2 months time, approx. July 31st, is a conjunction of planets in our solar system, which may trigger electomagnetic events that affect the earth, such as quakes, volcanoes and aurora. The planets were gods to the ancients for a reason, the Electric Universe Theory and Velikovsky can explain it for you.

People's obsession with doomsday could be because of the uncertainty of death. Not uncertainty in the sense of "will I?" but in terms of "how and when will I?" Any of us can go at any time without warning, but having a "doomsday" theory, or what have you, gives you some kind of frame as to when and how you'll meet your demise. Maybe some people find comfort in knowing that it won't be a surprise and they'll know how it does down before it actually does.
After reading over it, it sounds kind of silly, but that's the best I could come up with for the reason we have some level of fascination with doomsday.
Side note: That's a kickass picture. It's going to be either my new wallpaper or display pic.
