Buying ad space on Google is a popular online marketing tool, in the UK election this year users found ads for the Conservative party when searching for sites about the opposition parties.

According to the New Scientist, BP are using the web ad space after buying terms like 'Oil Spill' to show an advert which directs you to the BP site. The website, which a programme recently noted has a "Do you have ideas to help us?" phone number.

"As daily clean-up costs to BP spiral to $37 million per day and its chief executive is named the most hated and clueless man in America the company is trying to fight back - by buying search terms."-New Scientist

    • Mashable ran a good story on it too --

      http://mashable.com/2010/06/08/bp-oil-spill-google/

BP has purchased sponsored links that appear at the top of Google and Yahoo’s search results for terms like “oil spill” in its attempts to improve its public image in the wake of its massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

BP’s PR problems are severe. U.S. President Barack Obama said this morning that he’s talking to experts so he can determine “whose ass to kick.”
