(CNN) -- The United Nations will carry out a second airlift of baby gorillas, one of the world's most endangered species, from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The operation, planned for mid-July, will take the gorillas to a sanctuary where they will be cared for before being released into the wild, the U.N. said Saturday.
The first such rescue was undertaken on May 27.
Until now, the Congo Basin in Central Africa had been a rainforest refuge for gorillas and other apes.
But the threats to the gorillas' survival are so acute that a study that predicted only 10 percent of the gorilla population will remain by 2030 is now considered too optimistic.
A new U.N. report, released in March, said gorillas may go extinct in much of central Africa by the mid-2020s.
The situation is especially critical in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
There, militias have seized large chunks of gorilla land and logged and mined it. They have done so because the illegal trade in timber and in metals such as gold and coltan -- used in cell phones -- generates between $14 million and $50 million a year for them, the report says.
As the militia fight the army, the insecurity in the region has driven thousands into refugee camps. Professional poachers have taken to providing "bush meat" -- wild animal meat -- to the refugees and to the workers in the mining and logging camps. And increasingly, that meat comes from apes, the report said.

maybe they should start airlifting out people, like the women and children who are raped and terrorized in that area.

Just as the militias are raping and pillaging the gorilla's habitat they are literally raping and pillaging women and children of Africa. The human suffrage is 100x greater of a concern to me than "saving" gorillas through captivity.

Hopfully the Gorillas will be save in there new home and till be around for a long time. We have too many endangered animals in the world today because all the forest and jungles are being cut down for factories and technology is growing way too fast. We as humans to try to preserve nature as much as possible.

What jumps out at me, in this article, is the following:

Oh, gosh... You started off on a good note, and I felt encouraged that we were, finally, perhaps, communicating decently.
But then you had to throw in a couple of personal assumptions about me and then, on top of THAT, you're closing by suggesting I actually KILL another being?!
Mind you, just as with another blatant verbal attacker here, you do not know me, and you haven't the right to pretend you do.
One assumption you've stated, and which is wrong...
I have purposefully hung onto the same mobile phone for many, many years, and so, no, I am not the least bit interested in being cool by buying what YOU apparently think are cool iPhones (they're not).
You've made incorrect public ASSumptions about me before, and you've really failed THIS time with your other foolish assumption, when you addressed me as "mr ethicalvegan"...
I am all W-O-M-A-N.

do you have any idea how deadly the african militias are? these guys (and girls) get their first taste of military life before puberty. they make their first kills soon after being kidnapped and indoctrinated , and by the time they are 18 they're harder than a coffin nail. the conflict in iraq would look and seem like child's play compared to a campaign in africa.

Your simplified solution to the problem will not work well. But the visceral feeling of righteous indignation is well spent on the Apes. Good for you. However, the best way to change things is to change many peoples minds about the plight of our cousins, then perhaps the evil people will loose power and we can save the Great Apes. I think I caught you right, you did seem incensed about the Apes. You never bad mouthed them, and your anger seemed to be directed in the Apes favor.

ya know.. i normaly dont like what you say or how you say it.. but yea ,spot on. things are really that corrupt. * IT WOULD TAKE LESS THEN A WEEK FOR TROOPS FROM ANY PART OF THE GLOBE, TO TAKE OUT THE MINI MILITIAS THAT HAUNT THE CONGO. and there airlifting gorrillas out pretending like they give a shit... its sick.
ive never wanted violence to be the answer to any real problem but people should read what thoses mini militias do to people, and think of a suitable solution.

I am glad we are on the same page when it comes to saving the Great Apes, our cousins. While I do not think armed conflict will help, if you are mistaking me for someone who will not advocate force in saving our cousins, you are wrong. I just believe we should explore all other options first. Africa is no place to get involved in a bush or insurgency conflict. Americans do not have the brutality in them to win an insurgent conflict. That is a good thing. The only option there may be is the relocation of the Apes. More guns in the jungle will only hurt the Apes ability to survive, and our mutual goal of saving them will not be met.

I have to admit that, until now, I was totally unaware of trolling. I'm suddenly getting the picture, if only in the last couple of minutes (embarrassingly enough).
So you've helped me a great deal, with just a few simple, well-placed words, and I wholeheartedly thank you for that.
So what IS the point of trolling? What purpose does it serve, and to whom? And are there several trolls currently here? Or is it one individual who can somehow pose as various people, all bad-natured, and ofttimes cruel? Is it, perhaps, a mental illness?
Again, thank you for teaching me something new.
