Bush tried to reform the Social Security system during his first term but the opposition lied and said he was trying to "privatize" it. What he wanted to do was to replace all current retirement plans and savings accounts with a Roth like savings account. It would be funded with after tax dollars but would grow and enable withdrawals without tax penalty. People were given the CHOICE of opting out of SS or reducing thier payment to SS by 2% to invest in the new account. No changes to those close to retirement were proposed. The problem with this is it removes some of the power the governemnt has over the people. Therefore, the liberals lied and demonized Bushs plan.
Georges Buishs plan was a very good beginning. Pity those too ignorant to realize it.

you left out one very important part there, by removing SS dollars to a Roth-like savings account, it would also remove the culpability for insuring the security of social security from the federal government (who by the way is the one removing those dollars from your paycheck) to the individual holding the Roth account.
In plain English, that means you are forced by the Federal government to pay into a savings account that may or may not be there when you retire, and given the enormous talent of the banking industry to make people's investments disappear, and then get bailed out for doing so, I can kind of see why the public would like the culpability for insuring those funds to remain with the agency that demanded their payment in the first place.
Oddly, it reminds me of the same underpinning beneath Obama's health care reform.

It's funny how a lot of people prefer him, to someone like Obama, who actually has some common sense.
If you privatize social security, there's no guarantee that the company/bank you move it too will be there when you retire.
They might claim default, close-up shop, and you lose everything.
So, how would that be helping? - 1 year ago

How about that Government? of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations shall not perish from this earth, but we will. Why are we still listening to what George W is saying or what any of the political shills are saying??? Are we collectively still that stupid??? Three hairs away from a monkey, we are.
Do not vote, it only encourages them. Buy BP gas. Filler er up. Then maybe they will have enough money to shut up Obama. Shouldn't be biting the hand of those who put you in office. Not fond of political sluts. Which is kind of redundant.
Obama is amazing. Makes George W and Dicky Cheney and Billy Clinton look like the gods of honesty.
Remember Building #7 !!!! And lets all celebrate National Aphasia Day. When did stupidity become a virtue in America?

You do realize it was John Kennedy, AN EVIL LIBERAL, that you are quoting right? I did not think that the words of John Kennedy were allowed in the Conservative Neo-Dialectic. Oh FYI, John Kennedy liked African Americans too.

Why do we vote for Democrats or Republicans? They both have the same corporate masters. I am going to find a BP gas station, fill up and cast my vote for the real fixers. Let's eliminate the middle men. We almost accomplished that with Cheney. If only that pretzel had done the job. Can you imagine how pissed BP must be after buying Obama, to have him turn face and come after them? They paid good money. At least when the Mafia bought a politician, he stayed bought. No honor among thieves any more.

Bernacke has been talking up the privatization of Social Security for a while...given the fact that they have stolen from and lied to the American people about so much else, I am surprised he didn't get around to robbing the elderly too. Although with Obama's clear penchant for walking in George's footsteps, I guess we should brace ourselves for the next round of lies and robbery.

Yeah, my in-laws could have used the same kind of 45% drop they got in their investments in their social security checks. What kind of moronic press do we have, who report this GW BS like is was anything but the rantings of a now (and again) booze and coke addled moron of world class proportions. I'm with the pretzel fans. Looks like he might make it this time with the pussy in his mouth routine.
