42 milestones in cannabis

People around the world have been smoking marijuana for thousands of years while also using the hemp plant for everything from fabric and rope to ethanol fuel. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way, a man with a bit of power and enough determination decided pot was wicked, evil and narcotic. He moved mountains to make it illegal worldwide. In the U.S., the struggle continues to this day to overcome the lies and misconceptions about marijuana that the government spent billions to spread.

Between 1937 and 1947, the government spent $220 million on the war against drugs. Between 1948 and 1963, the cost of this "war" on marijuana alone escalated to $1.5 billion. From 1964 to 1969 the government spent $9 billion on the war against marijuana, a price tag that continues to rise.

First Fabric Known to Man

The hemp plant, also called cannabis or marijuana, has been used around the world for thousands of years. Sometime around 7000 - 8000 BCE, the first fabric is believed to have been woven from dried hemp weed.

Cannabis Seeds Used as Food

Around 6000 BCE hemp seeds were used as food in China. By 2727 BCE, the Chinese documented the use of cannabis as a medication to treat a variety of health problems. They later grew the plant on a large scale for food and fiber.

Cannabis is Cultivated and Left as an Offering

In 1500 BCE Scythians started to cultivate cannabis for weaving cloth. By 700 - 300 BCE the status of the plant had been elevated among Scythian tribes and cannabis seeds were left as offering in royal tombs.

"Sacred Grass" Named One of Five Sacred Plants in India

Cannabis is called "Sacred Grass" in the Hindu sacred text Arthava-Veda and named one of the five sacred plants of India. It was used as an offering to Shiva and also as a medication in India from 1200 - 800 BCE.

although decriminalization would be ideal for some, i really dont think voting no on legalization would help the situation. and it seems to be the case with some people. which is very upsetting because that tells me they would rather things be the way they are instead of something that could be worked on like legalization... you do realize we can place laws on the legalization of cannabis which would be like decriminalization i hope.

    • I get high almost everyday. So I must be a lazy stoner right? Wrong I am a 19 year old college senior, I have a job, and an internship with a senate campaign among other extra curricula's. I am not lazy I do not let it effect my life in a negative way. This plant should be legal everywhere.

keep up the good work tho yall, get educated and then spread the power of knowledge. its our most powerful weapon.

    • I enjoy the use of B.C.E. (Before Common Era) over the old religious based B.C.
And for those that don't know C.E. (Common Era) is the new A.D.

      Yep.

By adherence to the old standard your making a de facto statement that the christian God is the only God. This of course stems from the fact that A.D. means Amino Dominus or year of our Lord, the same is true for B.C. for obvious reasons.

It is religiously biased to us B.C. or A.D.

My art history professor always used CE and BCE, so I never had any confusion; but then again one usually doesn't talk about them simultaneously. I think it's better to separate the research and knowledge of scientific and human achievements from their theistic counterpart.

Aside from that, the real turning point at least in a Christian sense (and thus the world in your example) is it's establishment as a government sanctioned and supported institution by Constantine. If it hadn't been a state sponsored religion then it's ultimate fate may have been akin to the fate suffered by the original Gnostics.

Oh, I totally understand your points. But sense the date can't be calibrated, or corroborated (some speculate the date to be in BC or BCE depending) it makes the change largely arbitrary. Given its arbitrary nature (the BC AD change over that is) it would seem more logical to give it another name.

It really doesn't matter to much at the end of the day; as depending on which field of research is used and to a larger extent the exact nature of the audience (Scientific or researchers vs. Laywo/men) each are used.

It really just comes down to a matter of standards and practices of the specific field coupled with the preference of individuals. I prefer BCE and CE for the subtle reason i think it can imply on other people(s); however that doesn't mean I expect others to feel the same way.

Either which way, it is better to know and understand both.

A response to a previous reply by acontradiction as follows-
"aspirin works just as well and last for 8 hours...and there are several items out there that works better than "hemp" and we already have the system for it..whats the point of reinventing something for hemp??"

Compared to what again, asprin? Asprin can cause gastric bleeding and hearing loss if used excessively for only 24-48 hours, Tylenol causes irrepairable damage to the liver and they both have a plethera of other side effects in certain users. So what in "the system" do we have that is safer than Marijuana? It has been proven numerous times that pot is not physically or mentally addictive. Once again what do we have in "the system" that has the same mood alteration and can meet those non addictive qualities. Above all else, it is a plant and, like with posionous plants, animals and people would have learned to avoid it through the evolutionary process if it was harmful. Educate yourself man.

ok first. with your first question regarding illness.... why should we even need a reason to use a substance that till this day, since its first use, has not one single casualty as a result of its use? first of all there are thousands of people in america alone that would highly benefit from the effects of cannabis. True not all people who claim to be medical marijuana patients actually have a serious illness, but that shouldn't take one of the safest forms of medicine available away from those who truly do need it.

second, you really have to do some serious research other than looking at a couple of websites to come to the conclusion(that not even scientists have come to yet) that cannabis A. causes cancer, and B. damages the immune system...

there is plenty of scientific study that has been done around the world, that would prove the opposite... truthfully we wont honestly know what cannabis does, and all of whats in it, until the govt. give scientists a chance to truly study it. (like once before, but all that data was destroyed by the govt. who funded the study)*wondering why*

but all that aside, like i said b4. a person shouldn't need a reason to use cannabis. cannabis is a form of winding down after a hard days work/learning if you dont like cigarettes or alcohol(by the way cannabis is much safer than either of the two). some use cannabis to focus better on one subject or situation to efficiently solve a problem, hence why many college students use cannabis.

in a study in the UK people actually used cannabis to kick their addiction to actual drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes....

oh and if you didnt know, the safest way to inhale cannabis is by vaporizer, which since it doesn't bring cannabis to the point of combustion and filters the vapor, filters out all carcinogens and produces pure cannabis vapor. there are edibles which are more effective than smoking cannabis(but effects are delayed).

you cant tell me cannabis causes problems because it doesn't, its just the way people use cannabis... smoking anything period will cause problems, but still to this day even smoking cannabis hasn't produced a fatality, even among long term daily users.

new industry for our dying economy. pain pills can cause blood thinning and many other health problems if taken for an extended period of time, marijuana has no such effects on your physical health.

Your are really recommending aspirin to people instead of cannabis? You know aspirin contains chemicals much worse than THC that has many side effects and a tendency to easily kill people who overdoes right? Your a moron... Cannabis doesn't kill anyone even if you sat there and tried to OD on it, plus cannabis has far more uses than relieving an f'in headache... Second hemp makes one of the strongest fabrics known to man and your right we do have fabrics that are stronger but they are also much more expensive to produce.. so by your logic whats the point of legalizing a safe and extremely useful plant that can give us cheaper and still efficient alternatives to all kinds of products including cement, fabric, and biodegradable plastics? Real Smart you should read a book or two.
