FA: Capello to stay on as England manager

The FA has confirmed that Fabio Capello will continue as England's manager and take the team into Euro 2012.

The decision follows a week of speculation that Capello would take the blame for England's dismal World Cup performance and be forced out of his contract early.

According to a statement by the FA: "The Club England Board considered all aspects of England's performance and operations at the FIFA World Cup, and it was unanimously agreed that Fabio is the best man to continue leading the England team."

After England were ejected from the tournament following a 4-1 loss to Germany, Capello had indicated that he wanted to stay on until his contract finishes in 2012. The FA responded with their cards held close to their chest, saying they'd talk things over and form a rational decision within two weeks.

Club England Chairman Sir Dave Richards told press today: "He went into the World Cup with a reputation as one of World football's finest managers and we are confident Fabio will benefit from his first international tournament experience and this will undoubtedly make us all stronger for the Euro 2012 campaign."

    • This is bad news for the England national team. Capello lost the players when Terry was stripped of the captaincy. It isn't a question of discipline though, it is all down to motivation. Capello just can't motivate the team. And his stubborn nature doesn't help because players were played in the wrong positions.

    • Staying was a bad idea seeing as everyone hates him, the worst performances I've ever seen at international level from any team at a World Cup. I can't believe he left the Big Man on the bench, when he was the only forward in goal scoring form for England. It's no surprise he looks so angry.
