Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele has segregated himself from any and all party’s once again. Michale Steele seems to have either forgotten that there was a President before Obama, or that Bush was never President. Steele was caught on video spewing republicanism’s, saying that Afghanistan is “a war of Obama’s choosing”; I didn’t know Obama had the power to send troops while being on the Illinois senate. Steele is also quoted saying “If he’s such a student of history,” Steele said, referring to President Obama, “has he not understood that, you know, that’s the one thing you don’t do, is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? Everyone who has tried, over 1,000 years of history, has failed.” I again am astonished that this man is ignoring the fact that, Republican former President George W. Bush invaded Afghanistan in 2001 after September 11( I had to explain this just in-case there are more people who forget the past like Steele).

Now the Democrats are jumping all over his words as they should, but shockingly even very prominent conservatives are demanding his immediate resignation.
William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard, called Steele’s remarks “an affront, both to the honor of the Republican Party and to the commitment of the soldiers fighting to accomplish the mission they’ve been asked to take on by our elected leaders.” Fellow conservative Erick Erickson had this to say, Steele had “lost all moral authority to lead the GOP.”

Steele is now in full damage control, coming out re-explaining his statements. If you have to re-explain your political standings and true beliefs then your just trying to save face. A party spokesman said that Steele’s comments were in the context of speaking to future candidates and questions on the campaign trail. Steele however separated himself even further from his comments by saying this, Steele called winning the war in Afghanistan “a difficult task,” but “a necessary one.” While also backing it up with this statement, “The stakes are too high for us to accept anything but success in Afghanistan.”

The Director of the RNC has been saying that Steele’s job is intact and that Democrats are misinterpreting his statements. This is just yet another example of the Republican foot in mouth that seems to be running rampant lately. While most Republicans surly believe what Steele has said, they cannot get elected by saying what they truly believe. Of course Republicans are going to back away from him, because they want to get elected off of the less conservative ideals they preach, and once in office force the more extreme views on the public.

    • WHAT THE F__K IS GOING ON HERE?

Instead of some sort of commendation for a political party leader exercising some common sense, he gets not only chastised by his own chickenhawk party honchos, but the political left as well. Shame on those who wish to perpetuate the continuing loss of life and liberty in the name of party politics.

I commend Michael Steele for being a Republican party leader that has pulled his head out of his ass. The war in Afghanistan is just as much a failure now as it was under the previous idiot-in-chief, and our continued involvement in that part of the world can only be described as arrogant and reckless.

Don't take my words for it. Here's another Republican outsider (who opposed this nonsense from the beginning) commenting on Steele's change of heart. In the words of Rep. Ron Paul:

“I would like to congratulate Michael Steele for his leadership on one of the most important issues of today. He is absolutely right: Afghanistan is now Obama’s war. During the 2008 campaign, Obama was out in front in insisting that more troops be sent to Afghanistan. Obama called for expanding the war even as he pretended to be a peace candidate."

“Michael Steele should not resign. Smart policies make smart politics. He is guiding the party in the right direction and we are on the verge of victory this fall. Chairman Steele should not back off. He is giving the country, especially young people, hope as he speaks truth about this war."

“I have to ask myself, what is the agenda of the harsh critics demanding this resignation? Why do they support Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama’s war?"

“The American people are sick and tired spending hundreds of billions of dollars a year, draining our economy and straining our military. Michael Steele has it right and Republicans should stick by him.”

There is no reason to continue the bloodshed. There is no reason to further the hatred. America deserves better than this.

Take a stand and work to END THESE SENSELESS WARS!!!

Why? It's still a free country. And it's going to remain so if it takes the last measure of devotion I can give.

      You support war.

      You support occupation.

      You support your own oppressors.

      Wake the f__k up!!!

    • Agreed, but I suspect that Obama is deficient as well... That and his policies look much like Bush's.

Hey Obama thanks for resigning the patriot act, suggesting that it should be a criminal charge to drive with even non active marijuana in your system, and not reforming the drug laws which disproportionately incarcerate black males (which you claim to be)....

    • I voted for Obama, and am disappointed with many things he has done in his Presidency. However, let's not get our selves mixed up with History. It was BUSH who started and escalated the Afghanistan paradox. Obama has the unfortunate task of dealing with a fucked up war WE CANNOT WIN. Don't get me wrong, I think Bush actually made a somewhat smart choice in invading Afghanistan, because that's where the 9/11 terrorist were actually from, not Iraq. But then again, Afghanistan has become an ever-lasting clusterfuck for every nation that has invaded it since the founding of Babylon, so not a wise choice in those respects. Look back to October-November 2001. We were all pissed and wanted someone to point the finger at and invade after the 9/11 attacks. Afghanistan just happened to be on everyone's mind. Bush was gullible enough to follow what everyone told him in attacking Afghanistan, yet he wasn't smart enough to realize the war would become a never ending quagmire. Relatively no one in the general populace in post 9/11 America realized we would still be there to this day, myself included. Then again we should have learned from the Russians, who got their asses handed to them 10 years prior.

History is full of lessons, it's just we don't choose to learn from mistakes.

Actually, the terrorists were Saudi Arabian... you know, that one American Ally with all the oil? But they wouldn't dare touch them, so they go for the other nation with all the resources.

And regardless of whether Bush was gullible or not, it wasn't a war he started. That was Haliburton, Blackwater and every other corporation that could stand to make a profit over there that wanted blood and fire. Those were the guys that knew the war would go on for years, and that's what they wanted, even till this day.

But you are right; history has many lessons for us to learn. However, as they say, insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. The Soviets pulled out, America will pull out, and so will any other nation that tries to invade them.

    • He just told the truth. Obama voted for the war, during the Bush administration, and has supported it during his time in office. Steele is also correct about the failures of many Nations to attempt to subject Afghanistan. What a pitiful attempt to attack a man that is simply stating the facts.

But you don't understand. People on Current have to attack Republicans. It is just "the way". If a republican says the sky is blue, we must disagree. Also, we must spin, spin, spin the words of the Republicans. Please understand this.

And unfortunately vice versa since letting the facts get in the way of what people want to believe is the last thing that either party would want to happen.

After all it's that unecessary partisanship that keeps people distracted

truth? or the whole truth?like obama voted for the war, that we all voted for, cuz we were lied to?cuz that is a big part of the "truth" as it were that gets conviniently overlooked when someone is creating a pointed narative.
here is another truth or fact for your.micea steel is and has been inept since day one, putting his foot in his mouth so often as to make us wonder how he does not have hoof and mouth syndrome.it was suspect when he was made chairman of the rnc right after obama (first black pres) took office, that it was a token position, so the repubs could shake the old folksy racism they have been using for decades as theyre public persona.once steel began opening his big dumb mouth it was clear if he were white, he wouldnt have the job.racist republicans, unable to think of a person based on qualifications regardless of ethnicity is the truth in regards to anything micheal steel related.

That was why they choose Steele in the first place because he was Mentally Deficient since the whole plan was show "that a black man can't lead" just like Larry Wilmore went into in great detail to explain it.

"Instead of telling people that a black man will lead us all to ruin, they're using Steele to show us"

"The GOP sabotaged themselves on purpose. That is how they teach, just like the Bush Administration was purposefully inept to prove that government doesn't work"

one groups balancing act, anothers token minority.

it has always irked me that no one has bothered to note that micheal steele is the most extreme case of affirmitive action ever.he has no reason to be the head of anything.at least palin has an excuse for her vapid stupidity as her teeth were cut on the pageant circut, what is his excuse for smiling while espousing stupidity.
i guess its only offensive to the right when the left uses race as a reason for forced advancement, when they do it its just fine.even when the guy is completely incompitant.

"JUAN GONZALEZ: Congressman Conyers, I’d like to ask you whether the Republicans are constantly talking these days about the need to cut the deficits. Do you see any awakening on any part of your Republican colleagues about the enormous cost of the continued wars and that as a way of being able to reduce the American deficit?

REP. JOHN CONYERS: Yes, sir, I do. These discussions beneath the public level are very informative that we have. I had a Republican yesterday say, John, I wish I could join your caucus. But I am with you, anyway. Of course I’ve had Democrats say that as well. But more and more are realizing if you really are a fiscal conservative, how on earth can you continue to allow this incredible cost of the surge in Afghanistan with a straight face still talk about your trying to save money and make the government smaller?

AMY GOODMAN: Congressman Conyers, maybe you can coin a new term. There are the deficit hawks, maybe you can be a deficit dove and you can ask, where are the deficit doves? Chairman John Conyers of the House Judiciary Committee and Matthew Hoh, thank you both very much for being with us. Matthew Hoh, we have four seconds, should we get out of Afghanistan now?

MATTHEW HOH: We need to have a ceasefire at least—

AMY GOODMAN: We need to have a ceasefire, we’ll leave it there. Thanks for joining us."
