BREAKING NEWS:Bombs Strike World Cup Watchers In Uganda, Kill 64

KAMPALA, Uganda -- In simultaneous bombings bearing the hallmarks of international terrorists, two explosions ripped through crowds watching the World Cup final in two places in Uganda's capital late Sunday, killing 64 people, police said. One American was killed and several were wounded.

The deadliest attack occurred at a rugby club as people watched the game between Spain and the Netherlands on a large-screen TV outdoors. The second blast took place at an Ethiopian restaurant, where at least three Americans were wounded.

One American was killed in the blasts, said Joann Lockard, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Kampala.

Kampala's police chief said he believed Somalia's most feared militant group, al-Shabab, could be responsible for the attack. Al-Shabab is known to have links with al-Qaida, and it counts militant veterans from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan conflicts among its ranks.

A head and legs were found at the rugby club, suggesting a suicide bomber may have been to blame, an AP reporter at the scene said.

At least three Americans - part of a church group from Pennsylvania - were wounded at the Ethiopian restaurant. One was Kris Sledge, 18, of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.

"I remember blacking out, hearing people screaming and running," Sledge said from the hospital. His right leg was wrapped and he had burns on his face. "I love the place here but I'm wondering why this happened and who did this ... At this point we're just glad to be alive."

At the scenes of the two blasts, blood and pieces of flesh littered the floor among overturned chairs.

Police Chief Kale Kaihura originally said at least 30 people had been killed, though the toll could be higher.

Later, a senior police official at the scene said that 64 people had been killed - 49 from the rugby club and 15 at the Ethiopian restaurant. The official said he could not be identified.

Kaihura said he suspected al-Shabab, that country's most hardline militant group. Its fighters, including two recruited from the Somali communities in the United States, have carried out multiple suicide bombings in Somalia. If Kaihura's suspicions that al-Shabab was responsible for the Uganda bombings prove true, it would be the first time the group has carried out attacks outside of Somalia.

    • Hey guys,

Just a reminder to please refrain from derailing this discussion into personal attacks and insults. This is obviously quite a heated topic, and spirited debate is fine, but let's keep it focused on the issues at hand, not each other.

    • Guys & Gals eating shit on the Internet is one of the problems with the USA today. Anyone that would do that is sick! But with the "JACKASSIFICATION of AMERICA" by lowering standards of Morality and Uploading it to the Internet 24/7/365. It's easy to see how someone might not want their Society follow the same path.

    • In a government statement, Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said he "condemns in the strongest terms the despicable terrorist acts that killed over 60 people in Kampala."

Ahmed said "the fact that the victims were enjoying the World Cup reveals the evil and ugly nature of the perpetrators and the need to uproot from [the] region those who do not value the sanctity of human life," the statement said.

"The president also denounces the fringe Al-Shabaab terrorist groups [that] rejoice of the carnage and stated that Somalia mourns with the brotherly people of Uganda."

{"And the best of men have promised and they have delivered," said an Arabic statement issued by Al-Shabaab's press office and obtained by CNN. "Blessed and exalted among men -- (taking) full responsibility. ...We wage war against the 6,000 collaborators; they have received their response."
      The 6,000 is an apparent reference to African Union peacekeepers in Somalia. Uganda contributes troops to the peacekeeping effort.}

      - - "reveals the evil and ugly nature of the perpetrators (Islam Jihad i's) and the need to uproot from [the] region those who do not value the sanctity of human life,"
(It would have to uproot the essence of Islam, and how to achieve that?)
. . . as long as Islam remains in it's present form, mayhem and murder will remain it's doctrine of persuasion.

You are making a lot of assumptions about Islam as a whole. We are talking about extremists here. Characterizing this as a Muslim wide tendency is disingenuous. There are over 1 Billion Muslims and they are not all engaging in this kind of violence. We are talking about a hand full when you compare the groups involved with the entire world of Islam.

Well, that same argument can be made for Christians, or Jews, but we seem to like this type of generalization when it comes to something horrible like this, or the flotilla, or the homophobia going on in Uganda....it's a good point Jubal, but it tends to be true for all religions I think. It is so easy to judge the entire religion for the actions of the small faction of extremists.

(CNN) -- The death toll from bombings in Uganda rose to at least 74, authorities said Monday, a day after explosions ripped through two venues where crowds were watching the World Cup.
At least 71 people were hospitalized, police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba said.
"If you want to fight, why don't you attack soldiers or military installations instead of fighting innocent people watching football?" said President Yoweri Museveni, who on Monday visited a rugby sports center where two of the blasts occurred Sunday.
The casualties included one American death, the U.S. Embassy said. The American killed was Nate Henn, according to an organization that works with children in Uganda.
In a post on its website, the organization -- Invisible Children -- said Henn was in the country working with Ugandan students. CNN could not independently verify the information.
"Nate was not a glory-seeker and never sought the spotlight. He asked not to be made a hero of," the post said. "But the life he lived inspires reflection and imitation."
At least six other Americans were injured.
Mike Hammer, a spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council, said President Barack Obama is "deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks." He said the United States is ready to provide assistance to Ugandan officials.
      Map: Uganda bombings

The blasts hit in the capital, Kampala, within 50 minutes of each other. The first one struck an Ethiopian restaurant in a neighborhood dotted with bars and popular among expatriates; two others exploded at the rugby center.
A senior Ugandan government official confirmed there were three bombs. The second one at the rugby club was the most severe, said the official, who is not authorized to speak to the media because of the sensitivity of the situation.
Immediate suspicion swirled around Somalia Islamist groups. Islamic militants battling Somalia's U.N.-backed transitional government have threatened attacks on Uganda and Burundi, which contribute troops to an African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
"Our first suspicion is that this could be the work of terrorists from Somalia because of our forces in that country," the Ugandan government official said. "There is an investigation going on, our security agencies are analyzing the situation on the ground, but our first suspicion is Al-Shabaab. We've had this suspicion all along."
"We wish to condemn the criminality of these attacks," Museveni said. "From a casual look at the scene, I'm confident police will be able to reconstruct the crime scene ... We shall go after them because we know where they come from."
The bombings, he said, show "criminality, and terrorism has always been hovering over us."
In a government statement, Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed also blamed Al-Shabaab, saying he "condemns in the strongest terms the despicable terrorist acts that killed over 60 people in Kampala."
Ahmed said "the fact that the victims were enjoying the World Cup reveals the evil and ugly nature of the perpetrators and the need to uproot from (the) region those who do not value the sanctity of human life," the statement said.
"The president also denounces the fringe Al-Shabaab terrorist groups (who) rejoice of the carnage and stated that Somalia mourns with the brotherly people of Uganda."
People were wailing, some were trying to find their relatives, others were trying to run away from the scene

I truly am sorry to read about your kidney condition and your need for a transplant. My cousin had to have one and she waited for a few years...it was nerve racking. But shouldn't you not be drinking martinis with your kidney problem. I know the doctors would have taken my cousin off the list if they new she had been drinking. Its absolutely forbidden. Perhaps you should lay off of those until your health is restored.

I disagree with your assessment about democracy. Democracy works what destroys democracy is the inherent inclination towards evil that is present in free market capitalism. There is nothing to guarantee that capitalists will act in the best interest of all humanity...they tend to be a short sighted lot...preferring huge gains in the short run and forget about the fact that if they destroy the environment and take all the wealth for themselves...there won't be any consumers left.

2nd). I'd be nicer to people, like Jan, in particular because you really don't know where your help will come from.
3rd) I have hepatitis B, and I take my liver very serious. I stop drinking alcohol over 16 years ago. I know people with kidney disorders and NONE of them drink alcohol. Your doctors will allow you to die if that's what you choose to do.

in a perfect world all the antisemites that exist would be here on current for me to destroy through logic and reason, having you guys booted from here means i lose the ability to confront your rediculous accusations about me, my family past and present, and my people in general.
the last thing i want is for you guys to be booted.
i wish the jews of preww2 europe had message boards to see the kind of hate speech, and forces at work against them so they would know how to overcome it instead of be victimized by it.

.some one goes thier entire lives never meeting a jew, and only knowing what local racist mentality says about us, and while you echo it, it feels like home to them.but when i counter it logicaly it is a new perspective that they never had before.if all you antisemites went away, i would have no one to work off of.just as you need us as the permanent target, i need you to create defenses from that targeting.

im not interested in changing your mind,as racism only flourishes in the field of ignorance.i cant make the igorant smart or the hatefull not hate, but i can negate the bullshit it

the prpblem is some peoples broad assumptions.i think thier are only about half a doz actual antisemites on here, but feel free to tell me what i think, as you would of course know better.

i dont think you are an anti semite cuz at no point have you made a point of grouping all jews together as one, ignoring individual merit.but at the same time while not being hatefull one can espouse the speech, concepts, narratives of the hatefull, wich the left media runs a foul of regularly.
i think you are mixing me up with crystalman, i dont make a point of calling or branding anyone as an antisemite, as this forum doesnt allow for any kind of real substative evaluation.the few people on here who are legitimate antisemites have proven it with theyre own diatribes.i will however call out antisemitic statements where ever i see them, regardless of thier source.letting you know you have said something that is antismitic isnt calling you an antisemite, just as saying something racist, doesnt define you as racist, just unaware.

if you want to think israel is an international bully you are more than entitled to that, as no government is above criticism, but equaly i will prove you wrong as they are not.if the defense of israel means anything other than just that to you, it is an error on your part and i cant help you with that.i dont believe in zionism or anything other than the facts germain to the situation at hand.wich is israel lives with nieghbors who are more agressive than any other that a civilized nation has had to deal with, and despite that being the case, every day that they dont wipe the palastinians off the map (wich is the basis of hamas and fatah by the way to wipe israel off the map) is a testament to who is doing the right thing and who is not.

please let me say it again though, a zillion posts exist for this discission on any number of levels, but this thread isnt one of them.feel free to spread what ever idealogy you want in reference to israel on any israel thread and assuredly i will get into it with you, but for the love of god, understand that this story has nothing to do with what we are talking about.so to continue with out a focus is just a waste of time.

i do it often with negative results, so i wasnt going to point out the seemingly poetic oportunism.or the sneaking suspicion that currents articles of prominance may be selected on the basis for elevating a specific agenda.color me crazy but somehow when articles with 20 views and two comments are front page number one stories seems fishy.

Hi Jan, I'm not sure if you really meant to reply to Shana here, but posting more illuminating information on the same issue, regardless of the source, is the whole idea behind current's comments section. Christof's piece couldn't be more pertinent to this tragic piece of headline news.

    • The general public care more about some stupid ass game then what's really going on in the world. Fifa didn't help South Africa, it doesn't solve the gulf, it distracts from the issues humans need to be focusing on, it adds to the burden of making this civilization sustainable. Sweatshop sponsoring, anti-education promoting, commercialization perpetuating spectator sports. Fuck this shit.

Ohh, and suicide bombs suck ass too.

XVX for life, R.A.S.H. 'til death.

    • You'd think the fundamentalist Muslims from Somalia doing the bombing would like the fundamentalist Christians of Uganda's after their new proposed laws for killing homosexuals.

I guess they're still just infidels to them, no matter how much they agree?....

Is whose god better? Possibly the one that defines war on "unbelievers" to subjugate as slaves as the divine will of it's god?
~ Much like our govt today, huh?
There is a world-wide war of ideologies, and these struggles are impacting the whole of humanity

thats an existencial leap your taking there that i doubt most will recognize or understand.but its funny (odd not haha) that your position is the same in thisinstance as mine is when i defend islam.its not the quran that does the killing its politicos using it as a vehicle, just as torquemeda used jesus,as we use democracy,as the soviets used communism.

but still you hold to the "islam is evil" bit despite it being just a portion of the larger fallible human picture.islam literaly means peace yet they kill.jesus spoke of only love yet they hated.we are all about freedom as we oppress.why is islam sectioned off as seperate from these other forms of similar cognative errors, as opposed to just being another form?

Islam is evil, the desire of the faithful to fulfill it edicts, is to hold all humanity to the insanity of it's doctrine, which still remains in the dark ages. . . no matter what the apologist rhetoric may be, the fact remains the same, Islam intends to subjugate all humanity to it's will. . . the Qur'an dictates it and the faithful intend to implement it, and they openly declare it. . . and yet you believe they are not?

the numbers tell me otherwise.take every incident of supposed "jihad" and you could even double it if you like, and if each act represents one muslum who believes what you claim they do, it doesnt add up to one percent of the worlds global muslum population.if they were a religion of death the way you claim, they would be in a constant state of war with not only themselves (in the old you arent really muslum so you must die kind of way) but with the rest of us, yet thier arent enough of them to create a unified force.
the only conflict in the middle east (wich only makes up %20 percent of the muslum population) was iraq vs iran.this religion of death has only resulted in one nation going to war with another.israel dosnt count as any people who displace another are going to deal with the same eventuality, look at rwanda as a prime example of that dynamic not being middle eastern or muslum.
its like if europe looked at the rodney king la riots in the 90's, and concluded the destruction of la was indicitive of us as a culture.it is indicitive of a cultural problem.racism, but not us as a people.
if islam was all you say it is, why wasnt mohamed ali jumping at the chance to kill in vietnam.they are non muslum infidels.why is it that the nation of islam hasnt been wreaking havok on us for 50 yrs then?
why is it muslums have been going to college in europe for western learning for centuries if they hate us so.why is saudi arabia not only our allies, but begging us for tourism?
muslum governments may hate us, but muslum people are falling over themselves to if not get to the west, live as we live.from persians getting nose jobs, and dying theyre hair blonde, to the millions of muslums who have emmigrated to us and live peacefully as one of us.

evil lies in the hearts of all men regardless of religion or ethnicity.
