BP caught using altered image of command center

Image

Is a picture worth more or less than a thousand words if it's digitally altered?
John Aravosis of AMERICAblog made an interesting find Monday night: A high-resolution image on BP's website of the troubled company's Houston-based Deepwater Horizon response command center had been altered.

The altered image was later removed by BP and replaced with what they say is the original (the altered image is above and the original is below). You'll notice that three underwater images were inserted onto screens to the right on a wall of video feeds in the altered image, where blank images exist on the screens in the original.

** The Main image is the altered image **

    • Resources are the key to economic success. With the last one hundred and twenty years providing cheap fossil fuels to spur an economic growth unequaled in human history, the beginning of the end of that era is now upon us. It is a crossroads of time, we shall either forgo fossil fuels and with some sacrifice and pain by all and then move on in a future with promise or we continue on our present path where resources become fewer prices rise uncontrollably and economic collapse follows. This is the time to alter our way of life, embrace clean fuel technology even at a higher price initially. With scale of manufacturing clean fuels will compete and beat fossil fuels very quickly, a matter of no more than 15 years. The atmosphere gains as we stop increasing Co2. Economies around the world will be spurred on as the same manufacturing and industrial processes that facilitated the high tech boom will happen in a high tech clean energy economy. The world wins, humanity wins. The oil companies lose. The governments of the world who wish to save their economies had better come to the realization that energy and economic success are as intertwined as E=Mc2. Government stimulus monies around the world right now should be ushering in the next great economic leap for mankind, clean energy. Clean planet, healthy population.

    • It seems that people will complain about anything and everything once their minds are set on hating someone or something. This is precisely why progress can not be made toward bettering ourselves and the world in which we live. How about using our time and knowledge about what has happened in the Gulf to educate our communities about ways to reduce dependency on petroleum products rather than sitting and waiting for yet another event to complain about and sue over.

Ok... so why are you here? are you the voice of reason?

If so, why attack everyone else? very counterproductive!!! First you say, we shouldn't be complaining, than you complain about us being here....

      Dude, make some sense!!

well, whats not to hate about oil? instead of looking for way to reduce our use of it, we need to face that it's not the right way to go, and invest our money in renewable. we've got an endless amount of sun & wind. no wind spills, no sun leaks. we need to acknowledge that the old ways are killing us now & do a complete 360.

    • I am not sure why this is a big deal. It was merely an aesthetic choice by the photographer or website designer. Its hard to find a picture on any website that hasn't been doctored a bit. Some people will find any reason to attack BP.

I'm not giving BP any sympathy. I am just saying that it is silly to make such a big deal out of a harmless photo shop job. If it was any other company this wouldn't even be on current.

    • Now I'm not advocating doctoring news images but I'll have to go with the unpopular opinion that it looks like a photographer was just trying to make an esthetically more pleasing image.

There isn't anything nefarious or deceptive about the alteration. The blank screens were just replaced by copies of the other screens. No data of significance was added or removed. Models on magazine covers get more photoshop work than that.
It's common practice in marketing and PR photos from just about any company or organization.

    • We know they are trying to hide the truth!

They should be supporting independent efforts to document the problem so we can have as much data as possible to fix it.

Maybe we could get Lindsey Lohan to assist in clean up by telling her that the oil is actually booze and Oxycontin. It will be cleaned up in no time and I think it would reflect well at her next hearing.

    • what a surprise .... not!!

Interesting note: There has been an on-going issue of a MASSIVE oil spill etc for about 50 years in Nigeria ... We need to focus on purging the corruptness - not because it happened by our front door, but because its happening everywhere they go. Now its happened to us and were finally waking up ... We need to think about this guys ... seriously ... this issue is waaaay deeper than just the disaster happening to the wild life etc. Its not just about our Gulf - we need to take a global approach to it & expose their corruption everywhere - lets raise some awareness!! :) Lets save the world, not just our Gulf!!

    • This land is your land, this land is my land, they screwed up our coast, now we will screw them, just seize their assists, socialize the oil industry, if Venezuela can so it so can we!

As I went walking, along the Gulf Coast, I looked around me, the oil beach I see, it got me angry, then it occurred to me, socialize the oil companies.

This land is your land, this land is my land, we have the power, lets use our back hand, we’ll take them over, it’s called democracy, this land belongs to you and me.

When we take over, there is no profits, the price of oil, will start to plummet, we keep our oil, we share with no one else, this crude belongs to you and me.

We use our oil, we use it wisely, then make renewables, to run the highways, to run our cities, to fuel our industry, then dump oil on the ash heap of history.

This land is your land, this land is my land, from California, to the New York Island, from the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters, this land BELONGS to you and me.

    • LIBERALCONJOB:

The Constitution clearly says that Americans can vote in anything they want, up to and including socialist laws. There is nothing in the Constitution that gives capitalism ANY power. WE THE PEOPLE give capitalism power, and WE THE PEOPLE can take it away at any time! If you do not know that, then you are either ignorant of the Constitution, do not believe in it, do not care to read it or understand it. Do you believe that Americans have the right to govern themselves, to govern industry in our country, or are you against freedom and democracy? That is the question for you Mr. Conservative, do you believe in Democracy or don’t you? Do you believe in Democracy or do you believe in dictatorship? Tell us here, and have the courage to actually answer that question direct? If you do not believe that we run our country, then you are against the Constitution, against, Freedom, against Democracy and against Americans. Let me guess, you will skirt the questions, and preach some conservative propaganda, or spin the questions against the truth. I mean can you just admit what you believe in? Have some courage. We are waiting. And I am waiting to hear if you lie and spin. So let me ask again: Do you believe that Americans can vote in any law they want, including socialist laws?

And there it is, seek heil Conservativeconjob! You did not surprise me or anyone else. You refuse to answer the question, you are a coward just like your draft dodging friends, Karl Rove, George Bush, Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh. We have met the enemy of freedom, and they are your kind.

    • Apparently, BP wants to leave the cap on and plug the well to hide the amount of oil that flows freely. The lower the oil output the lower the fine BP will be. If they never get accurate flow from a free flowing well, they (BP) will down play the amount in the courts for many years.

    • More news...

The photo flap inspired the usually staid Washington Post to quip, "Apparently BP is no more adept at doctoring photos than it is at plugging deep-sea oil leaks."
BP spokesman Scott Dean told the Post's Steven Mufson that there was no diabolical plot to photographically beef up the company's command center. Rather, he said, a BP photographer with completely benign intentions just slipped the images in. (right!!)

I'm sorry! but you and I are connected and share a lot of things in common. Next time, invite me and I'll know what not to post.

Also, I don't post as I used to. I used to post at least a story a day, but in the last month have only posted 3 stories, including this one..... this one really bothered me!
