Before the Deepwater Horizon disaster Transocean carried out a survey of the rig workers to gather feedback. However, it is revealed by the New York Times, many of the workers were worried about the safety and risky work practises.

"Some workers thought that poor equipment reliability was "a result of drilling priorities taking precedence over planned maintenance"."-Guardian

It is reported the study also found some of the components were in 'poor or bad condition' with the blow out preventer and fail safe valves left not being fully inspected since 2000 "even though guidelines call for an inspection every three to five years."-Guardian.
