Police Raids On Organic Food Stores
source: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-raw-food-raid-20100725,0,4951907.story
Then, guns drawn, four officers fanned out across Rawesome Foods in Venice. Skirting past the arugula and peering under crates of zucchini, they found the raid's target inside a walk-in refrigerator: unmarked jugs of raw milk.
"I still can't believe they took our yogurt," said Rawesome volunteer Sea J. Jones, a few days after the raid. "There's a medical marijuana shop a couple miles away, and they're raiding us because we're selling raw dairy products?"
Cartons of raw goat and cow milk and blocks of unpasteurized goat cheese were among the groceries seized in the June 30 raid by federal, state and local authorities — the latest salvo in the heated food fight over what people can put in their mouths.
On one side are government regulators, who say they are enforcing rules designed to protect consumers from unsafe foods and to provide a level playing field for producers. On the other side are " healthy food" consumers — a faction of foodies who challenge government science and seek food in its most pure form.
They want almonds cracked fresh from the shell, not those run through a federally mandated pasteurization process that uses either heat or a chemical to kill off salmonella and other possible contaminants. They hunger for meat slaughtered on the farm. And they're willing to pay a premium — $6, $8 or more — for a gallon of milk straight from the cow.
So despite research outlining the dangers of consuming raw milk and other unprocessed foods, they're finding ways to circumnavigate federal, state and local laws that seek to control what they can serve at the dinner table. Such defiance, they said, comes from growing distrust of a food sector that has become more industrialized and consolidated — and whose products have been at the root of some of the country's deadliest food contamination cases.
"This is about control and profit, not our health," said Aajonus Vonderplanitz, co-founder of Rawesome Foods. "How can we not have the freedom to choose what we eat?"

Yes, like bovine growth hormone, or POSILAC which carries IGF-1 which has been linked to cancer. But its ties to Monsanto and Eli LIlly make it OK with the FDA. Again, consistency is needed in enforcement. Thanks for this map.

Yet the government allows Monsanto to poison the world with impunity and factory farms to run with little enforced regulation. Perhaps a little consistency would be in order.

I appreciate the gov doing their job. Raw milk is great until it makes you sick. Science is a good thing. Food regulation is a good thing. If some of you clowns did a little research about the dangers of unpasteurized dairy you would be singing a different tune.

The FDA should just make the natural growers and such put a crappy label on the natural stuff, warning the consumer of possible problems. I mean it's okay for Tobacco product, and we all know they kill thousands every year! What I want to eat and drink is my business. Besides informing me, the government and big agro needs to step off.

well, what if someone drinks this milk, gets sick, and then gets you sick... is that fair/free? This is something that can impact everyone, not just those who choose to drink raw milk. Yea it does seem ridiculous/inhibiting but it might be for the good of everyone....but then again it could be about profit control/other reasons. I'm not sure if we all know enough about this to really make a fair judgement

to this day i will only drink raw milk, i do not get it nearly as often as i did when i was a kid growning up on a farm. but i tell you there is nothing like the taste of unpasteurized milk, the rich sweet taste is truly one of natures gifts
the fact that people can not choose what they want to eat and drink, shows everyone the fact, we are not free, this so called freedom is a lie

"In the case of Rawesome, the group broke the law by failing to have the proper permits to sell food to the public."
Few of us are old enough to remember the dangers of drinking raw milk. Would you eat poisonous blow fish from an unlicensed sushi chef? Yes, you can say that people should be able to put whatever they want into their own mouths, but should the rest of the general public then be required to pay for their health care when they become sick? The guns drawn was over the top, but I have no problem with this otherwise.

Okay, 1) armed policemen for raw milk? How much taxpayer money was spent that day keeping foodies from enjoying something that, while potentially risky to those who consume it, has proven health benefits and in no way harms those who do not consume it?
2) Have you seen what food companies put into our food? Do you realize what they pump into cows and chickens before it enters our mouths? Have you seen the scientific research that proves what that "federally mandated pasteurization process that uses...chemical(s) to kill off salmonella and other possible contaminants" can do to the health of a human being?
Little girls reach puberty a full year earlier than before, women have proportions that aren't physically possible without the aid of food stuffed with hormones, and chemicals that haven't even been approved by the FDA enter our bodies all the time so that food companies can sell us more product, cheaper, faster.
The truth is that the pricetag on that more expensive food represents the true cost of food. Farmers are run like slaves, the soil is rapidly depleted, and harmful chemicals and radiation treatments are carried out every day so that we can have cheaper food in the short-term at the expense of long-term agriculture and human health.
So forgive the hippies for wanting the real deal. They (read: we) have science on our side too. It's just a matter of finding balance.

It IS about control and profit. I can only hope that eventually, enough people will be enraged that this corporate-led industry reverts back to local ma-and-pa establishments.
Even though I'm fortunate enough to live near a co-op and a farmers market, I still grow some of my own food. My garden started a trend; some of my neighbors saw my vegetables and decided to grow some of their own. Wouldn't it be wonderful if my entire block grew different foods that we could all share and trade with each other? I think that's what it will need to come to again, because it's gotten to the point where I can't trust what the FDA is approving as food in my local grocery store... or if my "organic" soy milk is coming from thousands of miles away. I'd be willing to pay more if I knew the money was going directly to the farmer who provided the goods. Interestingly enough, farmers markets are CHEAPER than grocery stores.

This sounds like the FDA or USDA. This has happened before with people who own "shares" in a cow whereby the owners get a percentage of the raw milk and cheese produced by the cow. I have read stories where raw milk was able to be consumed by people who could not drink the pasteurized variety. We grow our own food and only eat organically grown chickens, meat etc. I don't see where it is a crime to not sign on to the gov sponsored food products. This is absurd.
