US Senate Candidate Dr Mike Beitler - America Should Welcome Peaceful Immigrants

I believe in a comprehensive immigration policy that looks at the humane issues as well as the needs of our country for economic migrants. The United States is a nation that has relied on immigrants throughout our history; without them, our nation would never have been, and certainly would never have survived. As our country gets older, as the baby boomers begin to retire, we need an influx of immigrants to the United States just to maintain a strong economy, feed our country, and continue to grow. Immigrants are an asset, not a liability. Immigrants create demand for goods and services. Business owners understand that; politicians do not. Politicians want to distract us from their mistakes. Politicians use fear to distract us. Immigrants are today’s scapegoats.
There are many who argue that the amount of undocumented workers in the United States is a fiscal drain on our economy. There are many who argue that the increase of people from Mexico and Central/South America has led to more violent crimes. There are people who allege that our culture, our way of life is changing that America is not what it used to be. To them I would say that you are wrong, very wrong. Some immigrants take advantage of our welfare system. However, the overwhelming majority of welfare spongers are corporations getting bailouts from government.
In March 2010, the American Conservative magazine dispelled the myth of illegal immigrants and crime. Lastly, the idea that the United States has ever been some monolithic culture is childish. The ideals of our founders, the US Constitution, and our desire for liberty and the lack of interference from our government is what makes us “American,” not jingoistic nationalism. We proudly have ‘hyphenated’ nationality in the United States. I myself am of German-American stock. We have Scots-Americans, Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, Asian-Americans, African-Americans and of course Hispanic-Americans. What ties us together is the ideals and founding of this country and a desire to pursue ‘life, liberty, and happiness.” We are a nation built on the individual endeavors of its population, from every walk of life, and not an accident of birth by geographical location.
The fact is that we need workers in this country. We stopped producing as many children in order to have those fancy cars and houses. The downside to this is that we will have a massive population deficit in the future. People, as crass as it may sound, are a commodity of the future. Look at what you had for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Without an influx of people, much of our farming production would grind to a halt. Look at all of the amenities that we enjoy. Look at the service and restaurant industries and the hotel industry. Undocumented workers provide a source of labor for jobs that Americans feel they are either too qualified, above, or just downright don’t want to do. Do you aspire for your children to be picking fruit in the middle of a North Carolina summer? Do you like to eat at restaurants? Do you like to travel and stay in hotels? Are you a small business owner? If so, on many occasions what you enjoy or use is possible because of ‘undocumented labor.’ There is often a cognitive dissonance between how these things happen and how we get to enjoy the benefits of them.
I am a supporter of amnesty for undocumented workers who have not broken any laws other than seeking a better financial future for themselves and their families. I am a supporter of allocating sufficient visas to close unlawful migration channels. I am a supporter of strengthening our border to ensure a strategic border enforcement policy that reflects American values.

Most of the emails I have received about this article are very positive. Anybody thinking about this issue rationally should come to the same conclusion.

but they're not all welcome. There are unconstitutional quotas still on the books and it limits the number of good immigrants that are allowed in. We need to stop the government from restricting these people from peacefully moving and living with us.

Exactly!!! We have a politicized top down centralized immigration policy that doesn't take into account supply or demand in it's arbitrary quotas. If we substantially increased the number of immigrants, work visa's, education visa's, ect while greatly expediting the process, from years or decades to weeks or even days,. we could eliminate most of illegal immigration. Once we stop the flow of illegal immigrants we can expedite the process for those already here illegally without unfairly treating those that have waited or have waited years. The only arguments against this would be simplistic protectionist fundamentalist arguments easily disproven or exacerbation of the fiscal shortfalls of the social welfare state. The social welfare arguments, social security, medicare, medicaid, ect. are are fundamentally untenable and to lighten the burden by disallowing immigration would be like trying to save yourself from a plummeting plane by jumping up and down.
