I think that if they have paid into the fund through working they should be entitled just like everybody else. There could be a provision though that if you earn more than $2k/month in interest on assets that you should be exempt since you probably don't need it.
I feel like someone with millions wouldn't find it worth it to go through the effort of getting/keeping unemployment,

Yes, even the rich are currently “entitled” to collect unemployment (also Social Security and Medicare). The System is set up wrong because the Rich wrote the laws.
It Should Not be an entitlement program, it should be a purely Social program (the way it was originally intended to be) to help those that need it, not everyone that paid in! If you don’t Need it then you should Not get it! That would save Billions of dollars.
As for the millionaires that “don’t have any money in their pockets”, they can Sell what they have to support themselves, when they completely run out of property And money, only Then would they be eligible to collect. I have NO sympathy for millionaires. I don’t think that the American people that are working hard should have to pay to help the Rich keep what they have when they have a little hard time (BOO Freaking HOO).
If we could Fix the programs that help those in Need to Only give help to those that Truly Need help we could save Billions of dollars and have No problem paying for the programs and could easily afford to pay for Everyone’s Healthcare. If the Rich don’t like the Government Universal Healthcare then they can buy the insurance they want or just pay cash for what they want. Insurance companies would Not go out of business if we had Universal Healthcare, they would just be smaller (and Who thinks that would be a Bad thing?). As long as someone wants something there will be someone to sell it to them!
Eliminate Entitlements!!!

Yeah, and then they would be just like the broke ass fucks that hate them. A lot of people seem to hate successful people. People that in general, worked for what they have, not sitting around complaining about how unfair life is. How the "Rich" Write the laws. Well, you vote don't you? There isn't enough rich people to vote in all the laws, or lawmakers, what's the excuse now? How about the people that aren't willing to work, that are working the disability angle, the unemployment angle, the welfare angle? What about we fix the welfare thing, if you can't afford those kids you have, you don't have them? How about if you get caught scamming disability, you go to prison for 10 years? Too harsh? Too bad.,

Yeah, and there are a lot of Poor people that worked hard for what little They have but can’t get anywhere because the Rich need there unnecessary profits at the expense of the working man. It doesn’t matter who is elected, the Rich still buy the politicians and have the laws written to favor them over the common man. When the working man sees the Rich elite making bigger and bigger profits but their wages stay the same it is no wonder why they want things to change because They are the ones that do all the hard work but are not getting rewarded for it.
I do agree with you that we need to eliminate people that get what they don’t need. That includes the poor who sometimes Do take advantage of the system and don’t want to work, but that is a very small percentage of the ones that receive benefits. Yes, let’s Do eliminate All (Rich and Poor) that do not need help and mooch off the system. Also, Yes we need to do something about those that keep having kids just to get more government money and usually don’t use that money to help the kids, but instead spend it on themselves or buying drugs. And Yes we should have severe penalties for those that scam the system. But there are Many, especially in today’s economy, that Do need help, but the Rich are Not among them.
It is funny how the well-off always complain about the few poor that Do take advantage of the system and use that fact to try to eliminate ALL programs to help the poor, (“It’s MY money and I should be able to keep ALL of it!”). But when they have a little hard luck they are quick to look to the government to help them. The hate goes both ways! The problem is GREED!

Maybe the guy or gal is a millionaire on paper, but is flat broke. If he or she paid into the system the are entitled to it. Do you think that this is only for people that fall in the poor category. Not knocking the poor, but people that have earned their way up the ladder fall on bad times also.

Welfare isn't abused as much as people think, at least not in Washington state where my mom works for the welfare office. Most of the people who come in are genuine, getting through a rough time, but I'll admit there are some who abuse the system. You don't get enough money to do anything besides pay a really low rent and buy crappy food though. These people end up watching TV all day because they can't afford to do anything else. It takes a rare breed of lazy to do this your entire life, I don't know many people who could live that life, so a vast majority of the population would at least work a really low level job. That there are tons of people living on welfare is another republican lie.

It's amazing how much hatred there is on this site for people that actually have something, not just a bunch of broke dicks. Because you are worth more than a million dollars (the definition of a millionaire), I guess that if you lose your job, the benefits that YOU HAVE PAID INTO, should not be doled out to you, since you still might have some net worth. I've got news for you, just because you are, on paper, worth a mil, or more, doesn't mean you've got a dime in your pocket. I know people with property worth more than $1 mil, yet have a very hard time coming up with the property taxes and insurance payment.
Now, I'm a long way from a millionaire, but the ones that I do know, have worked for, and still work, everything they own. If they paid into it, they should be eligible for it.
Get to work.

Unemployment compensation, the new social lifestyle; good idea, but badly abused, like welfare. It was meant to help in hard times not to be used from cradle to the grave.

The program is for people who actually need the money to keep a roof over their head and feed their children. Those who have substantial assets do not need the money.
In fact they cause the economy to be worse by inflating the unemployment numbers. Which does two things, it makes businesses hire less, and it gives the public the false impression that the economy is worse than it really is, since it is assumed that it is middle class and lower people who are loosing there jobs.
You also have millionaires purposely defaulting on their homes which causes the housing market to look worse than it really is!
In fact if half of the millionaires lost their jobs the public might be very happy at this point!
Their greed has been exposed!

So you choose it to be another entitlement program? sorry, not the way it works. If you consider it as an "investment" the payback to "wealthy" individuals by percentages is extreemly lower than those of us not wealthy, i would dare say less than 1%. The rest of us 17% (real unemployment). I do not consider it greed to recieve what by law is theirs, i do consider greed for those that think it should be theirs only.

Everyone is entitled to have shelter, water and food. The wealthy already have that. They are also the ones pushing to not extend benefits.
The article also states "Less than 20% of the income at the top is attributable to actually working. "
Now who feels entitled? If they didn't suppress the wages of everyone in the country while making themselves rich then there would be much less need for this safety net.

Just found these little gems in the article.
Less than 20% of the income at the top is attributable to actually working. The lion's share of income for those taxpayers at the top comes in the form of capital gains income -- even in a down economy. Lucky for those taxpayers, capital gains is generally tax favorable.
Even as millionaires garnered unemployment, they also reaped Social Security benefits, too. Nearly 57,000 taxpayers who reported more than $1 million in income in 2008 also collected Social Security payments.

Good on you for digging in on the article! That is some amazing stats. You can hear it all the time how republicans are for getting rid of the capital gains tax and the so called "Death Tax". That tax is the estate tax and only really effects the top 1% of tax payers. When and if people finally wake up and realize the Repugs are nothing but shills for the rich and Corporations.

I think this proves just how greedy they are. It also inflates the number of jobless claims, which then makes every company weary of hiring.

You are so correct, and the fact that we as a people have given these wealthy, tax cuts over the last decade at the tune of creating 1 job for every 550,000 dollars in tax cuts blows my mother fucking mind! I haven't seen that particular clip from youtube, but after watching the first couple of minutes of it I knew exactly what you are referring too. A group of industrialist and wealthy tycoons did try to recruit General Smedley Butler a two time winner of the medal of honor to help pull off the coup. Butler being the fine individual he was turned the plot in to the authority's. It's my recollection that old Grandpa Prescott Bush was also involved, no wonder they hate social security and everything that FDR did for the people of America. The definition of FACISM defined by the founder Benito Mussolini is when Corporations combined to become the government. Posh positions for lifetime enjoyed by major industrialist if it had of happened, and yet the free market people of today enjoy the benefits of a capitalistic system saved by FDR in the 30's. Thanks for providing this clip for anyone who wasn't taught this in history and history books that are now published in Texass!
