Glenn Beck Imitates Nazis, Forces NJ Libraries to Remove Books That Don't Share His Totalitarian Views

A public library in Burlington County, New Jersey has ordered all of the copies of "Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology" removed from circulation, after a member of Glenn Beck's 9/12 Project complained about the book's content.

The library cited "child pornography" as its reason for removing the book.

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN)(http://www.glsen.org/) describes "Revolutionary Voices," edited by Amy Sonnie, as "the first creative resource by and for queer and questioning youth of every color, class, religion, gender and ability." It features first-hand coming-out accounts from gay students, and "reflections on identity," according to the School Library Journal(http://www.schoollibraryjournal.com/slj/home/886066-312/nj_library_citing_child_...). It was also named as one of the best adult books for high school students by the Journal in 2001.

But, according to Beverly Marinelli, a member of the 9/12 Project in Burlington County, the content is much more sinister than that. In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Marinelli called it "pervasively vulgar, obscene, and inappropriate." Marinelli maintained she's "not a homophobe," but called a drawing of Boy Scouts watching two men have sex, "the worst."

The ACLU-NJ obtained emails through a Freedom of Information Act request that reveal that Marinelli met with Gail Sweet, the library's director, in April. Following their meeting, Sweet arranged for the Library Commission to discuss the book's removal that month.

The Commission ultimately supported the decision to remove "Revolutionary Voices" from circulation, though "no official challenge" was made, and "no actual vote by the commissioners" was taken, according to Sweet's emails. The reasoning was that the book constituted "child pornography."

In an email to the library's circulation coordinator, Sweet asked: "How can we grab the books so that they never, ever get back into ccirculation [sic]. Copies need to totally disappear (as in not a good idea to send copies to the book sale)."

Sweet responded to TPM's request for comment with a brief, "Thank you for your interest but I do not have any comments to make."

In emails to Sweet, Marinelli linked to articles by conservative websites Big Government and Gateway Pundit, which quote some of the other content in "Revolutionary Voices" that they found objectionable.

Take this excerpt, for example:
I learned the truth about Santa Claus and masturbation in the same year. I was 9. I had a hunch about Santa, but I had no clue about masturbation. I mean, I had no clue there was anything wrong with it. As far as I know, I've been masturbating my whole life. But it wasn't until 9 that I realized it was an impulse that you had to turn off. Especially in class. Fourth grade craft time taught me shame.

Notably, the Gateway Pundit post that Marinelli linked to is mostly targeting Kevin Jennings, who the right-wing accused of having a "pro-homosexual agenda" after President Obama nominated him as director of the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.

Around the same time the Burlington library took "Revolutionary Voices" out of circulation, it was also removed from the Rancocas Valley Regional High School library after complaints by Marinelli and others in the local chapter of the 9/12 Project.

Marinelli did not immediately return TPM's request for comment.

    • Its amazing that something like this can occur, and its also amazing that when something like this occurs people do a kneejerk "it's all the liberals fault".

    • Here's my question, why do all of these people like this school and the White House, with the Shirley Sherrod story, cower to Glenn Beck's every little whim? Why don't they just do the sensible thing and ignore him?

Eventually Glenn will marginalize himself, eat a dick, and his fad will die someday.

The Liberal Attack on Freedom of Speech
      By Robert Knight
It’s been 43 years since student protester Mario Savio ignited the “free speech
movement” at Berkeley with his famous address urging fellow students “to
put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon
all the apparatus -- and you’ve got to make it stop!”
Today, liberals are still trying to stop “the machine,” but they’re not aiming
at the government or university officials. The “machine” they are trying to
stop is public opinion that disagrees with theirs. The American left has
adopted a totalitarian mindset; they’re actively working to stamp out dissent.
Did you know that the same liberal group that helped to get Don Imus fired
for his offensive “ho” remark tried to get Rush Limbaugh censored on the
Armed Forces Network? Or that this group, Media Matters, which is
reportedly backed by anti-American financier George Soros, has declared
war on conservative talk radio in general? Imus, who is not even a
conservative, served as a revealing test case.
Did you know that liberals in Congress are trying to suppress conservative
and religious free speech by passing new restrictions on grass-roots lobbying?
Did you know that homosexual activists and their liberal allies in Canada
and elsewhere are working hand in glove with American groups to enact
“hate crime” laws designed to silence anyone who opposes the promotion of
      homosexuality?
The pattern is clear. Liberals, who once championed freedom of speech, have
become the foremost critics of uncurbed opinion, and are working to deny free
speech to people with whom they disagree. It’s part of their war on personal
responsibility and the right to express one’s conscience. The liberal elites like
to tell us what to think without those annoying dissents muddying the
      waters.

Wait, so you're trying to say that Glenn Beck's "trying to
stop is public opinion that disagrees with" his by making a school ban a gay book makes him a liberal?

The NRSC has a site and a petition opposing the Fairness Doctrine, the site is called Stop Liberal Censorship.com and what follows is the wording of the petition:

      Free speech is under attack.

As Democrats in Congress eagerly line up to legislate what you hear on the radio it begs the question: what's next? Newspapers? There's no end in sight to their power grab.

Democrats like Al Franken have tried to compete with the liberal talk radio Air America; yet they failed miserably and the network collapsed into bankruptcy.

And why did they fail? Because people chose not to listen. In this country's Free Market system radio stations succeed and fail based on their content. If people do not like the content of the program, they turn it off. Our marketplace guarantees your freedom to choose what you want to listen to; and that freedom is what doomed liberal talk radio to collapse.

Realizing that their ideas couldn't compete in the Free Market, Democrats schemed for ways to crush conservative talk radio's success.

Their answer? The so-called “Fairness Doctrine.”

Revival of the “Fairness Doctrine” would have the chilling effect of censoring conservative talk radio by requiring radio stations to air liberal content. Air liberal content or your station license will be revoked.

It's unfortunate that Democrats are willing to trample on our First Amendment rights for political gain.

What part of Congress shall make no law doesn't Hillary Clinton and Al Franken understand?

The result of pervasive and institutionalized liberal censorship is termed liberal totalitarianism.
Such attempts to remove first amendment rights (see Fairness Doctrine), along with gun control and the outlawing of creation science and even homeschooling, have led many critics to note the parallel between the modern liberal movement and 20th century totalitarian regimes. The censorship of school prayer is consistent with Fascist beliefs.[3][4][5]
Georgia Congressman Paul Broun claimed that Barack Obama may seek to establish a Marxist dictatorship in the United States.[6]
      Gun Control
The term Liberal Totalitarianism extends to liberals' attempts to breach the Second Amendment by banning weapons. By removing guns, a government can remove citizens' ability to resist totalitarianism, as occurred in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. As Thomas Jefferson stated, "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."
