VIDEO Veterans & Activists Rally for Wikileaks Whistleblower (CNN)

pinkpanther
Veterans and anti-war activists from several groups organized a rally for Wikileaks whistleblower Private Bradley Manning yesterday in Quantico, VA. Manning is being held in solitary confinement in a military brig in Quantico.

Medea Benjamin of Code Pink told CNN, “We are here to say that if, indeed, he was the whistle-blower, then we are proud of him. We as Americans want to expose the truth of what’s happening in both Iraq and Afghanistan and we think that it will hasten the day to bring the troops home. We want our troops protecting us here in the United States, not fighting in what we consider unwinnable, unnecessary wars.”

Private Bradley Manning, a 22 year old intelligence analyst with the US Army, stands accused of disclosing a classified video of American troops shooting civilians from an Apache helicopter. New evidence links Manning to the Afghan War Logs posted on WikiLeaks this week. He faces up to 52 years in jail for his role in the leak. The whistleblower behind the Vietnam era’s Pentagon Papers, Daniel Ellsberg, has called Mr. Manning a “hero.”

CODEPINK participated in the rally with a diverse group of activists and veterans. Groups who participated along with CODEPINK in the rally were: Courage to Resist, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace, ANSWER, Virginia Catholic Worker, Gray Panthers, World Can’t Wait, and the National Lawyers Guild.

A counter-rally was organized by protesters and is also featured in the CNN video.

    • Let me first say i have never and will never fight for this countries right to bear arms against another country, that has not declared war on us all ready.

For the simple fact that they have lied to us about the last 3 wars for sure.

If they have to lie to us to make these wars happen and continue, then it is wrong period.

that being said i consider this man a hero for following his conscience, despite the NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT it poses. How long can the US put its own national security before that of innocent people around the world.

I feel ashamed for letting these wars start and continue.
I think we have forgotten what fighting for freedom really means.

I'm sure the Pentagon has feed them the this will cause soldiers to get killed line, and I'd bet they have no idea what the Pentagon papers incident really was about.

No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court. The Congress shall have power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted."

      ...just for reference

basically, it's too early to tell whether or private manning commited treason; a trial is necessary. however, since wikileaks is accessible to the public, enemies of the usa can obtain the information pretty easily, but who knows if they have the resources to piece it together into to some sort of effective strategy...

He gave info to Wikileaks, who is not a declared enemy of the US.

Wikileaks, a news organization then made it public, and collaborated with three major news papers all in allied countries.

    • Some time around 1900 Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt had penned a warning to the American peoples that went unheeded til this day. His words; "Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people. To Destroy this invisible government, to befoul the unholy alliance between corrupt business and corrupt politics is the first task of the statesman of today." Theodore Roosevelt. John F Kennedy and Ike Eisenhour made very similiar statements but the people are either deaf or cannot understand english. These radical vicious entities have been working for 233 yyears to acheive their goals and as of this day they are so embedded they are the entire US Government and they are not so invisble today as they have been forced out in the open. Andrew Jackson and Abe Lincoln were the only two men with the guts and intelligence to get rid of them, but like the parasites and pests they kept coming back until they created the perfect time with the help of an insider, a Senator to secretly have their personal agendas passed and ratified with the minimum votes but it was crooked and gangster style. Now they are after the world. Just compare what Teddy Roosevelt said and think about one thing. Most of the people who are fighting us around the world have no education except to memorize religious texts and follow brainwashing into the realm of intense hatred. and instead of he world trying to educate the people they make perfect contestants for this modern version of gladiatorial games. So these invisible leaders can watch and read about the bloodshed and count the dollars for every drop.

    • One must remember back to when we were embroiled in Vietnam...war without end...started by a pack of lies that were much later admitted to be lies...mass civilian casualties....atrocities being committed by the coalition partners...a war that lasted 4 presidents long...people protesting and protesting to no avail...a veil of secrecy over the media....when suddenly a man working a the Pentagon decided to reveal the long held secrets about all the lies that were being perpetrated against the American people....that man was Daniel Ellsberg.

"The most dangerous man in America" according to Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon...he revealed secrets about lies and coverups and he was accused of treason. History keeps repeating folks. At the time...Ellsberg was considered a traitor a whistleblower...back when there were no protections whatsoever for whistleblowers...there still aren't adequate protection for whistleblowers.

Today he is considered in many circles as a true patriot and he is a celebrity. There is a documentary out right now that deals with his entire story and it parallels what this man did with revealing information about Iraq and Afghanistan. This man is being called a traitor...because what? He told the truth?

"Telling the truth is an act of treason in an empire of lies" George Orwell once wrote. We are living that today and this man has told the truth about something that the government didn't just cover up recently....no...its an ongoing coverup and conspiracy of lies that goes back decades and decades.

This man is a patriot and he should be honored even though he broke his oath. He swore to uphold the constitution and to defend it. Isn't telling the truth defending our core values and principles? Are you defending the government's lies? Do you think its right for our government to lie to us and then call it National Security?

Whose fucking being kept secure here? Us the American People? or the fucking liars?

There were also lots of groups involved in it:
Courage to Resist, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace, ANSWER, Virginia Catholic Worker, Gray Panthers, World Can’t Wait, and the National Lawyers Guild

    • Private Manning took an oath. He had ample opportunity (before joining the service) to learn about U.S. practices when it comes to exploiting lands and peoples so that we may wipe with ultra-soft tissue. He either did not avail himself of his learning opportunities, or he knew what he was getting into and decided to violate his oath anyway. Now he faces a ruined life, and his actions have real consequences for us all.

Manning's story is, in my opinion, a perfect example of the need for vigorous, honest, and comprehensive public education. If we teach our children and grandchildren the realities of American life and history, we will equip them to make choices that do not involve them in treason, misguided heroism, or that most pathetic human activity, war.

Manning's story should not be a focus of our attention. Instead, we each need to examine our daily activities and speech and align them with principles that will, when they are put into action, make it unnecessary for America to be the world's savage Big Brother. We need to get off our asses and get back to work creating a rational society that is not based upon acting like spoiled and arrogant swine.

voted up, I happen to agree with you, the kid did a dumb-ass thing, for whatever reason, although I am not willing to see him hanged for it. I think our government is far too secretive and clandestine in what they are up to on our tax dollar. There is a deplorable lack of transparency when it comes to warfare operations, and I do believe they are squandering not only the lives of our sons and daughters in these wars, but the lives of many innocents abroad as well.

You're right about our government acting as if it is above civil law. The U.S. has undergone a silent coup these last 8 years, and the real government is a network of private military contractors, arms manufacturers, oil companies, and bankers. Their influence is pervasive, and they do not care one whit about the lives of young people. I think of the novel, "Johnny Got His Gun" when I see PFC Manning's face on the television. Here is a person who will be made an example of so that the legions of his peers will learn to fear their fascist masters.

The coup goes all the way back to before Eisenhower...it started with Teddy Roosevelt and his gun boat diplomacy...it started when they instituted the Federal Reserve in the dark of winter on a December night when most of the Congress was gone home for Christmas during Andrew Jackson's presidency. The coup has been on going for decades and decades.

Nothing short of a complete halting of the economic engine is going to get their attention. We all must in an act of solidarity stop the economic engine of Capitalism itself by stopping the flow of money completely. It would literally take everyone to stop paying their bills or spending any money for at least 6 months in order to get their fucking attention.

You all need to see the banned movie called "The Salt of the Earth" to see what needs to be done. Watch the movie and you will understand what is at stake and what must be done in order to put a stop to the coup.

Coming from a Veteran, not you facebook revolutionists, put this kid to death.

and I believe the MILITARY has become a little too hands off UNTOUCHABLE in this country. The people who are making the decision to go to war are not the ones who are sacrificing their children in these wars, and Congress ain't feelin any of the pain as they continue to insulate themselves from the consequences of their actions, if anything, they are padding their own pockets.

    • oh yes before i move on..

here is something to read about those poor civilians..

      http://current.com/news-and-politics/92595694_taliban-flog-murder-pregnant-woman...

Shooting her in the head rather than stoning her to death is an innovation. Nonetheless, this is yet another Sharia Alert from Afghanistan: "Taliban execute pregnant woman," from AFP, August 9 (thanks to Kenneth):

The Taliban publicly flogged and then executed a pregnant Afghan widow by emptying three shots into her head for alleged adultery, police say.

Bibi Sanubar, 35, was kept in captivity for three days before she was shot dead in a public trial on Sunday by a local Taliban commander in the Qadis district of the rural western province Badghis.

The Taliban accused Sanubar of having an "illicit affair" that left her pregnant.

She was first punished with 200 lashes in public before being shot, deputy provincial police chief Ghulam Mohammad Sayeedi told AFP on Monday.

"She was shot in the head in public while she was still pregnant," Sayeedi said....

The radical Islamists staged public stonings or lashings of those found to have committed adultery or sex outside marriage.

The then-Taliban government would also chop off the hands and feet of those accused of theft and robbery.

      ...in accord with Qur'an 5:38.

we aren't changing this behavior by our presence, and to quote one Afghan woman, "If I cannot free myself from this oppression, no one can do it for me." Afghan women, and all oppressed women have got to untie and make this change, we can support them, but we cannot do it for them. Until they make it stop, it is not going to stop.

Your cell phone is in your pocket.
He clutches the cross hanging on his chain next to his dog tags.

He knows he may not see some of his buddies again.
You walk down the beach, staring at all the pretty girls.
He patrols the streets, searching for insurgents and terrorists.

He's told he will be held over an extra 2 months.
You call your girlfriend and set a date for tonight.
He waits for the mail to see if there is a letter
      from home.
You hug and kiss your girlfriend, like you do
      every day.
He holds his letter close and smells his love's
      perfume.
You roll your eyes as a baby cries.
He gets a letter with pictures of his new child,
and wonders if they'll ever meet.

You criticize your government, and say that war
      never solves anything.

He sees the innocent tortured and killed by their
own people and remembers why he is fighting.

You hear the jokes about the war, and make fun of men like him.
He hears the gunfire, bombs and screams of the wounded.
You see only what the media wants you to see.
He sees the broken bodies lying around him.
You are asked to do something by your parents. You don't.
He does exactly what he is told even if it puts his life in danger.
You stay at home and watch TV.
He takes whatever time he is given to call, write home, sleep, and eat.
You crawl into your soft bed, with down pillows, and get comfortable.
He tries to sleep but gets woken by mortars and helicopters all night long.
