Top Ten Ranked West Point Cadet Resigns Over Don’t Ask Don’t Tell - Lez Get Real

Yesterday, Katherine Miller was the #9 ranked West Point Cadet.

She is also a lesbian.

Miller has resigned from West Point saying she cannot reconcile the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy with her desire to live an open and honest life and maintain her integrity.

Miller writes in her resignation letter:
… I have created a heterosexual dating history to recite to fellow cadets when they inquire. I have endured unwanted approaches by male cadets for fear of being accused as a lesbian by rejecting or reporting these events. I have been coerced into ignoring derogatory comments towards homosexuals for fear of being alienated for my viewpoint.

In short, I have lied to my classmates and compromised my integrity and my identity by adhering to existing military policy.

While at the academy, I have made a deliberate effort to develop myself academically, physically, and militarily, but in terms of holistic personal growth I have reached a plateau. I am unwilling to suppress an entire portion of my identity any longer because it has taken a significant personal, mental, and social toll on me and detrimentally affected my professional development. I have experienced a relentless cognitive dissonance by attempting to adhere to §654 [colloquially known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”] and retain my integrity, and I am retrospectively convinced that I am unable to live up to the Army Values as long as the policy remains in place.

Miller also indicated her desire to still become an Army Officer should the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy be removed, and gay and lesbian people allowed to serve freely.

In a press release issued by Knights Out, an association of LGBT alumni of West Point, they laud Miller’s many accomplishments, such as her prowess on physical fitness tests and her blogging, one entry of which was printed by the Washington Post.

Knights Out also gives an update on what Miller’s future will look like now that she is no longer at West Point:
Miller will be transferring to Yale University this fall on a Point Foundation Scholarship.

“This is a loss to the Academy and to the Army,” said Becky Kanis, West Point ’91. Kanis, Chair of Knights Out, and a former Captain and company commander added, “We keep losing talented people needlessly while we wait for the Pentagon’s ‘review.’

Miller has been blogging anonymously about lesbian culture at West Point at velvetparkmedia.com as “Private Second Class Citizen.”

    • I have served in the Army with many outstanding soldiers who also happened to be gay or lesbian. It's sad that they had to conceal their true selves in order to serve their country.

Katherine Miller, I salute you for your honesty, courage and integrity and I hope that, some day soon, you will be able to serve in the military openly. I also believe that this brave act is a great service to our country. You are setting an example of what a true leader is.

I say 'unfocused' because the mission at hand is not her sexuality.

As far as DADT, I am for whatever the Generals want. Beyond that I can care less what anyone else feels about the matter. They have to make rules that benefir the mission and not worry about PC crap.

There is NO draft and she was not forced into this uncomfortable situation. She made her own decision. There are many ways to serve your country in peace and time of war outside the rules of the military. She should focus on those areas if she feels uncomfortable.

"I say 'unfocused' because the mission at hand is not her sexuality."

that's the point she and most rational thinkers are trying to get across. her sexuality shouldn't have any bearing on her service. and it is a breach of integrity. we can't claim integrity and then lie about simple shit like our personal lives.

"There is NO draft and she was not forced into this uncomfortable situation."

maybe she lost someone in sep. 11th and felt that it was her duty. maybe her love for this country runs so deep that she is willing to give her life for it. maybe she needed money for college. the economy's gone to shit, maybe she needed a job. who she is attracted to is a non-issue when it comes to service

"repeal doesn't mean the mission changes," I never came out for or against the current rule and of course the mission doesn't change.

I consider anyone who fights in our armed forces a hero.

My last comments were more in regards to knowing the current rules and the individual decision one has to make prior to signing the piece of paper.

I thank Cadet Miller for the brief service but I am not goinf to say the Military is worse off without her. She chose her road.

I don’t doubt your assumptions but still currently the rule is the rule. You talk about integrity as if it’s only an arrow pointing one direction. Integrity is an arrow pointing in all directions. You may have a concern of institutional integrity in this case but you also have to look at individual integrity.

To use your example “maybe she needed money for college” What type integrity must a person have to gain free institutional education with on one hand and then stab that institution in the back with the other?

Again the Military is not the only way to serve or defend this country.

how did she stab it in the back? she did say once the policy is changed she would come back. if anything the policy stabbed her, me, anyone who is lgbt, and anyone who serves along side anyone who is lgbt in the back. (if you're keeping track, that's everyone).

"Again the Military is not the only way to serve or defend this country."

and? that's the path she choose. just like i did when i was in jrotc. what you do in your off time has nothing to do with your service (unless you get married). this is an outdated policy and it needs to end. and i'm behind Katherine Miller 100% in her decision. she has more balls than me

"if anything the policy stabbed her....in the back" It takes special person to walk into a knife knowing its there. This rule didn't suddenly 'pop' up behind the shadows. It was out in the open.

Me personally, I don't care the sexual orientation of who serves in our military but to quote BHO "That decision is beyond may paygrade". I leave that decision to those in charge of the Military - beyond the Comander in Chief.

It takes no "balls" but a "pussy" to quit anything.

I am not sure if you are understanding my point. A person is free to join or not joining the Military knowing full well what the rules and consequences are soin the end she quit.

Standing up for yourself is not joining in the first place if the rules and consequences do not fit your lifestyle, (right or wrong).

We are a country of FREE choice and rule of law. They do not conflict each other as long as the rule of law is publicized as it is in this situation. We can't expect those rule to change just because they donot fit an individual situation.

You are right the buck does stop at the CiC but most have never been on a Military base except for campaigning or as President. A Comander in Chief would make a decision like this based on Politics and polls and not the actual needs of the military.

doesn't matter if a president hasn't ever been on a military base. We have a civilian government not a military one. FDR wasn't in the military and he led us thru WWII. Your obsession with Obama has clouded your logical facilities.

You are right on with that but when people respond making her out to be the greatest thing that ever hit our military and she will be a big loss that required me to step in.

People quit the Military all the time for all sorts of policy reasons. She is nothing new.

actually you were the one that started in on her.

      "Her loss our gain."

      i'm just saying

"People quit the Military all the time for all sorts of policy reasons."

hopefully there will be one less fucked up policy for people to quit for!

No one did, my over-exaggerating chum, so there was no need for you to step in. To say she was good or an asset is not the same as the greatest thing unless your thesaurus is malfunctioning
