Robert Quintana, founder and organizer of the first Gay Pride Taos celebration in New Mexico, died suddenly Monday. He was 29.

Quintana's death was most likely due to an underlying familial medical condition and not foul play, according to a press release. Quintana's sisters remain committed to the event, to be held August 20-22, saying, "We want to be sure that his dream, his vision for Taos Pride, lives on. We are working closely with Gay Pride Taos to ensure that the entire community stays connected and part of this amazing event he’s organized."

TheSanta Fe New Mexican quotes Quintana as explaining the importance of Pride for LGBT youth earlier this month: "Maybe, just maybe we can save some of these kids from a life of depression and misery and give them a happy, clean start and in turn they can bring their energy and talents back to our community."

Donations to the Robert E. Quintana Memorial Fund will be used to help fund the leader's funeral, with any money remaining used to sponsor local LGBT scholarships in his name.
