Kei Koizumi, an aide in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, placed first in the 110-meter hurdles.

This was Koizumi's second go in the Gay Games, according to The Washington Post.

"I didn't think I was hooked on it, but I'd done the hurdles at a different distance at the last games and thought I'd try this sprint distance in Cologne," the aide said.

Many commentators are already gleefully taking advantage of wordplay, commending Koizumi for his work clearing budgetary and policy hurdles for NASA, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other departments. Office of Science and Technology Policy spokesman Rick Weiss added, ""We at OSTP expect such nimbleness but do not generally give out medals for it."

Koizumi finished the race in 23.25 seconds, securing first place for the 40-44 age range. Koizumi's husband, Jeff Dutton, won a silver medal, his first, in the marathon.
