Police in southwest Oregon are frustrated by a growing number of small marijuana gardens popping up in backyards.

The Mail Tribune reports that the hidden gardens are growing cannabis to supply more than 7,000 people in the area who have marijuana cards under the state's Medical Marijuana Act.

    • Misconceptions of Marijuana Use

      1. Marijuana is addictive. The vast amount of medical research exists today that shows that marijuana is not physically addictive in any way, and the cessation of marijuana use does not lead to withdrawal symptoms as one would find in a tobacco smoker or an alcoholic.

      2. Marijuana is a gateway drug. This can be argued, but the facts are not quite in favor of this theory. In fact, recent studies have shown that tobacco use is a much more solid indicator of hard drug usage down the line.

      3. Marijuana can lead to lung cancer. This has not been proven and studies have been done. While the same carcinogens are present in marijuana smoke as in tobacco smoke, the lung cancer link is not there. Theories about this lack of causation include the possibility that THC itself acts as a protectant against cancerous cells.

Keep in mind that there are arguments to show marijuana as psychologically addictive even in the absence of a physical addiction. It is also important to note that using marijuana may be the first drug many young people try, leading them to experiment with other more dangerous drugs.
      Considerations of Legalizing Marijuana
The jury is still out on the full implications of legal marijuana usage. While studies have been done, the illegality of the drug has made it difficult to do the kind of research needed to make long-term decisions regarding future laws governing its use. While there have been no causal links to lung cancer, common sense can show that smoking carcinogens is not a good thing for your long-term health. However, THC and cannibinoid have other methods of consumption available, lessening the argument for full-scale bans, and likewise softening the arguments for across-the-board legalization. While the positive effects of marijuana are many, only time will tell if they will be put to their full use.

    • Take heli pictures of my garden and print it on the front page of the Mail Tribune and my lawyers will be contacting them! I am pissed off at ignorant and demeaning and negative medical marijuana newspaper coverage in Oregon! I want to see proof of the lies about the claims that only 4% of Oregons medical patients actually need a card.

    • i like to grow on the south side of bushes and bend the plants as they grow. that way you get more tops and the plants can get as big (long) as it wants without being too conspicuous.

    • If there isn't enough crime or theft in a city to occupy a policeman's daily job, then the policeman should go and sit with their family or friends and relax, not go looking for quiet respectable citizens that are growing in peace

I agree, there are many great awesome things to do in the world. But don't you sometimes get those lazy days when all you want to do is watch TV? The ancient saying is still right "everything in moderation". The thing with marijuana is that it doesn't mess you up and you can still function perfectly fine. Which means you can have a few bowls with some good friends then go bowling or out to eat or to an amusement park or any other adventure that one wishes to embark on.

It's not the user's fault that they have to kill each other over selling plants that anyone can go and grow. There are plenty of responsible, non-violent growers across the world.

I guess I'll demonstrate how to write a correct sentence again.

I have a question, why the fuck do you need to, "alter your mind," is there something wrong with it, and/or do you guys even give a shit about who dies in order to provide you with drugs?

Many people don't need to alter their mind, they simply want to do so. And someone altering their own mind is not really as uncommon as you might think. People have been legally altering their minds with alcohol for decades as a form of recreation. The difference is when you get into drugs that permanently alter your brain chemistry. Such drugs include crack, meth, ecstasy, and heroin. However, marijuana is not such a drug.

      A. its not always about altering your mind, and if it is, so what. some people like to explore alternate realities, it's a hobby of mine, to be personal.
      B. You could accurately say that all deaths caused by marijuana (indirectly of course as no one has ever died directly from marijuana) are due to the fact that it is illegal.

and for decades these who did decide to "alter their minds" were never a problem?? or at least became a depend of society..or perhaps killed one or two..

THC is a chemical that renders a person INCAPABLE to make sound decisions in life..like when to get a job..or when to better themselves..or when NOT to do thing that might harm them or others..

good just learn when to turn off the hobby and step into reality...

greed...is what kills..may it be legal or may it be illegal...if we live in a sort of outlandish world where there is no money no need for money no need for ugly services..where we dont have any responsibility towards others..THEN I SAY LEGALIZE IT but till then its the humans im worried about and NOT the marijuana

Completely false, marijuana is a fantastic plant. It doesn't "alter minds" it causes you look at topics and opinions and other things from differently. When high one can understand things that were previously dripping with confusion. About 80 percent of the time I smoke, I do yoga and meditate. When doing yoga, my body feels completely relaxed, I stretch and feel muscles that I didn't even know existed. And after this complete body relaxer, I sit outside and meditate. And let me tell you during this meditation, I have realized amazing things and my creativity is painting beautiful pictures in my mind. More good has come from my life from smoking. I'm relaxed, my body feels in great shape, and my mind is focused and disciplined. I am completely aware that all of the previously stated things are capable without the use of marijuana, but by using it as a herb (the real purpose of the plant) your mind is opened to new things and previous prejudices and stereotyping are gone

THC renders people no more incapable of making sound decisions in life than alcohol. Yes, if you test positive for THC in a random drug test at work you'll be fired, you'll also be fired if you show up to work drunk. The simple matter is that smoking a single joint isn't going to ruin your life. And in many cases, smoking marijuana somewhat regularly probably won't ruin your life any more than drinking a few beers somewhat regularly. If you become addicted then you have a problem, but the actual problem of having your judgement impaired will be no worse than if you were a drunkard. But you can prove me wrong if you'd like. Name a terrible side effect of smoking pot that is not also applicable to drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco.

The violence only happens because IT'S ILLEGAL. Do you think people would be causing violence over something you could walk to the store to purchase? The problem originates from the laws - not the people.

      Reporting from Reynosa, Mexico —
A new word has been written into the lexicon of Mexico's drug war: narco-censorship.

It's when reporters and editors, out of fear or caution, are forced to write what the traffickers want them to write, or to simply refrain from publishing the whole truth in a country where members of the press have been intimidated, kidnapped and killed.

That big shootout the other day near a Reynosa shopping mall? Convoys of gunmen whizzed through the streets and fired on each other for hours, paralyzing the city. But you won't read about it here in this border city.

    • Overgrow! The best herb is grown outdoor in full sun and force flowered at the begining of june. You have to with a sativa that takes takes three months to mature. Also, the closer to the equator is going to be better, more intense UVB rays to have the tricome develope to the max. New Mexico is where it is at, currently with they're laws; I won't hold my breathe on the south coming to sane reality anytime soon.

    • from the article;

"The growers say the gardens provide a needed service and are a healthy sign of a changing culture in Oregon. But many police and sheriff's officers say the law has too many loopholes. Medford Police Deputy Chief Tim George says patients with legitimate illnesses should have marijuana if they need it. But he says the large amount of money that can be made through street sales invites abuse."

"LOOPHOLES?" Let them bust the corporate tax evaders who really know what loopholes are! the cops are just thugs for hire, and the rich implement the loopholes in their favor. that means making money off the corrupt corporate system that has turned hundreds of American towns into "prison towns".

If this is not a "grass" roots issue, i don't know what is!

maybe growers should let the males live so they can harvest a record amount of seed for just one season. then the seed can be distributed freely for everyone to grow in their own or some other domestic suburban area. the point would be not for profit, but to free the plant from oppression through proliferation.

FREEDOM FROM IDEOLOGICAL OPPRESSION THROUGH THE PROLIFERATION OF OUR OWN NATURAL LAWS AND UNDERSTANDING.

totally agree, it is time to stop this nonsense. We are adults and don't need the government to tell us what we can and can not grow, or eat, or smoke, or drink, and you are so right about the police being corporate thugs. Hulu is running a great documentary right now on Harlan County, USA about the struggles of the coal miners, and it clearly demonstrates the police being corporate thugs for hire:

Here's how you do it...you get a female plant and you produce cuttings or "clones" so you are sure to get a female, you can give these to friends. If you use a vaporizer one plant is plenty for a year.

    • Yeah well the DEA and National Guard started patrolling the air about 2 weeks ago and will continue till late October...

Of course there really aren't that many growers, or nearly enough people willing to risk it. So tons of tax dollars wasted on efforts to round up maybe 10-15 gardens and 8-10 rednecks.

I wished it were everyone planting up their backyards locally.....
