Performing animals mistreated in China, says report
August 15, 2010 11:21 p.m. EDT

(CNN) -- Bears riding motorcycles, tigers jumping through flaming hoops and pigs leaping off diving boards. Just some of the "entertainment" that can be seen at circuses, zoos and safari parks in China, according to a report by Animals Asia into animals cruelty.

The Hong Kong-based animal rights campaign group visited 13 safari parks and zoos in China and according to David Neale, Animals Asia's Animal Welfare Director, found that the animal shows "portray the animal to the public in a humiliating way" and have no educational value.

"There is a misunderstanding really within China at the moment about what these animals are experiencing," Neale told CNN.

The report says that many of the performance animals that include tigers, lions, Asiatic black bears, elephants and monkeys are born and bred in captivity and brutalized throughout their lives.

"These animals have been suffering from birth, really. Once they're born they go into this industry. And straight away the trainers are starting to brutalize them to make them to do these tricks.... We saw some of the training of the younger animals; they were continually hit to make sure they learnt these tricks so that when they're out in the performance ring they perform them to the best standard."

"Once the trick is finished they then go to the backstage area where they're housed in the most shocking conditions. All kinds of animals are held in cages full of faeces, with very little access to water, very little access to food."

The abuse of performing animals isn't specific to China.

"Animal cruelty is happening in every country across the world," said Neale.

However Neale points out that in China there are currently no animal protection laws, a reason why Animals Asia have worked with Chinese academics to draft legislation not just for animals in captivity, but all animals.

Despite the findings of their investigation, Neale is encouraged by a few signs of progress by the Chinese government to take animal protection seriously.

According to a government report on July 29 the Chinese State Forestry Administration accused companies that have animal performance shows of having excessive focus on profits, leading to the mistreatment and death of the animals.

"We're very pleased that the Chinese government has said that they want the zoos and safari parks to look at the conditions they keep their animals in to rectify these problems," said Neale.

    • so we raise animals in a life of misery only to be executed and chopped up to be served in a steakhouse and we're worried about other countries treating their animals poorly? that's SO american

Well, Eddie_Miller, I'll say that THIS U.S. citizen does not expose only OTHER countries' treatment of sentient beings. I am a non-violent animal rights activist, and so I speak out against ALL atrocities inflicted on any being (including humans). There's "Veganism" to check out, if you will, so you'll better see at least MY angle on animal exploitation.

    • I wonder how many of the people judging these Chinese trainers are vegan? If you are not then you are also contributing to animal abuse and should look to your own life before casting the first stone. It may be more sensationalist to point to performing animals in another country but animals bred for meat, dairy, eggs, leather, wool etc. are also subject to torture. Anywhere that animals are considered property is a place where animals will be abused.

Hi, I hope my response didn't in any way indicate a criticism of you. I think it's important to call out instances of animal abuse and it's good that you did so. My comment is aimed more at those people who make spiteful comments and are outraged at these instances when they themselves will turn a blind eye to their own animal consumption.

    • This is from the people that paint children's toys with lead and poison baby formula. Color me not too shocked. It sucks but they do not even care much about people

It's a result of statism. These people live in constant tyranny and most do whatever they have to to survive (outside of the animal cruelty). Let's not brand all Chinese into your xenophobic worldview quite yet, bad people come in all colors.

If you want less stressful people, allow more Freedom and get the manufacturing base back over here. Once we are prosperous, there will be less need for people to cheat each other.

I meant the government. I am not a xenophobe! Or did I imagine the poisoned toys, baby formula... oh yeah and dog food that killed my chihuahua. I do hold a bit of a grudge but it is not against the people of China, it is against the government that allowed this.

      Is that clear?

    • you only mention China but performing animals are mistreated everywhere...they are kept in cages and forced to do things that are not in their nature to do. It doesn't matter if they are fed properly and are cared for dearly, and animal is an animal and it deserves to be where it belongs, nature.

    • Yeah but a lot of the people in China are mistreated too. Why would you expect them to treat their animals better than they treat their people?

Yes, there is "THAT" attitude. Let's get outraged at those, um, "foreign" countries, because there are nothing but, um, "foreigners" living in them, and so everything they do is despicable. Now, hurry up and get dressed, or we'll be late for the opening gate at tonight's horse racing.

Report: China zoos mistreat performing animals

      (AP) – 6 days ago

BEIJING — Performing animals in Chinese zoos and parks are often trained using abusive practices, including routine beatings, and are housed in inadequate shelters, according to a report by a Hong Kong-based animal welfare group released Monday.

Bears are regularly whipped and beaten with sticks, elephants are prodded with metal hooks, and tigers and lions are defanged and declawed, causing them chronic pain, said the Animals Asia Foundation in a 28-page report.

The group surveyed animal performances and living conditions at 13 zoos and safari parks in China over a yearlong period until this August.

"The combined aspects of performances, abusive training methods and inadequate housing conditions are causing severe animal suffering for many thousands of performing animals across China," the report said.

Earlier this year, the problem of animal mistreatment in China was highlighted with the reported deaths of 11 rare Siberian tigers at the Shenyang Forest Wild Animal Zoo in the frigid northeast over a three-month period. The tigers had reportedly starved to death after being fed nothing but chicken bones for weeks.

Last month, the State Forestry Administration ordered a crackdown against operations that mistreated wild animals for performance purposes.

The order criticized animal parks for being "obsessed about financial profits while not paying enough attention to protective measures. Illegitimate methods are taken in treating wild animals ... This not only brings potential risk to the endangered wild species and the public health, but also tarnishes China's role and reputation in protecting wild animals."

The Animals Asia Foundation said black bears are the most popular animal performers, typically forced to ride bicycles, tricycles, and even horses. They were required to balance on balls, perform acrobatics, and even 'box' each other. The bears were regularly whipped or beaten with sticks by their trainers, it said.

"All of the performances observed were based upon fear and intimidation. To force animals to perform unnatural tricks, circus showmen frequently engage in negative reinforcement, whipping and striking the animals repeatedly," the report said.

Lions and tigers, which were forced to jump through burning hoops, had all their teeth removed for security reasons. That caused caused severe pain since it exposed nerve endings in their mouth and gums. Elephants were prodded with metals hooks to perform tricks like kneeling on their front legs and stepping over people.

The report said animals are often housed in cramped concrete enclosures or cages, sometimes with no visible access to water. Some showed physical signs of being underfed, ill, or beaten.

"Animal performances portray the animal to the public in a humiliating way that does not promote empathy and respect. There is little educational value in seeing animals in conditions that do not resemble their natural habitat," said David Neale, the group's animal welfare director.
