NATO Strikes Kill 3 Afghan Civilians, 3 Police

Top NATO officials are constantly warning that the most important part of their long term war strategy in Afghanistan must include avoiding killing civilians and building up the nation’s police force, but they appear to have failed on both counts yesterday, launching a pair of attacks that killed three police and three civilians.

The civilians were killed when NATO launched an air strike against a vehicle. Ground troops had previously killed six people who got out of the vehicle in the Farah Province then ordered an air strike against it. When they searched the scene they found a woman and two children had been killed in the strike.

Meanwhile in the northern Jowzjan Province NATO helicopters were called in to attack “insurgents” that the area. They fired a hellfire missile which killed at least three police and wounded several others.

In both cases NATO officials expressed “deep regret” for the killings and promised “step-by-step investigating into what went wrong.” The attacks were just the latest in a series of strikes throughout the week that left a number of civilians dead.

On Wednesday hundreds of Afghans launched a protest over the killing of three civilians in a night raid. NATO also admitted to killing a farmer in Kandahar. NATO also admitted to air strikes against a home on Sunday which killed at least five civilians

    • Wow what a joke of an article. Hate to break it to you but we are at WAR. There will be casualties no matter what. Lets pray Obama can actually create a real plan of action in Afghanistan as well, that does not include a timeline!

Afghanistan has long suffering from "under-resourcing"...When I was there in 04, the total number of U.S troops was around 24,000...at the same time there was 40,000 sworn police officers in New York.

    • This is NOT WAR, This is MURDER!

War is genocide, torture, cruelty, propaganda, dishonesty, and slavery.

War is the worst obscenity government can inflict upon its subjects. It makes every other political crime - corruption, bribery, favoritism, vote-buying, graft, dishonesty - seem petty.

    • We could have sent troops to those areas to have on the ground surveillance. Then we could be sure they were the correct targets in this war zone. Then we can watch as some 30 troops and three transport helicopters get shot up from the ground. One chopper would go down necessitating a battalion of US and NATO forces get into a fire fight with local Taliban. After three days of fighting 13 US and 3 NATO forces are killed and 56 in all wounded. The number of enemy dead is estimated at 170 at this time. Civilian casualties killed is 9 while wounded is 39.
Or we can have the original story.
      Better yet let’s just leave.

Of course Current.com has it's share of knuckle heads and key board tough guys but for the most part, everyone is very intelligent and has some extremely valid opinions. But sometimes I get anger when I just keep reading that same tired old stories. Express your disgust with the war, but don't try for a second to even pretend you have the slightest idea what's it's truly like out there.

    • Mike don't forget about the oil and drugs too. They can print more paper money. They can't just magically make more opium and oil. ;)

The TAPI oil pipeline, a newly discovered massive qualities of natural gas and giant deposits of precious and rare metals such as gold, copper and sliver. Also, Pakistan is a nuclear armed nation and we need to make sure their current government (Pro-American) keeps a firm grasp on the country and eliminates any insurgents hiding in the Swat Valley.

Its called nuclear non proliferation, there is a real possibility that Pakistan will fall, or a military takeover of civilian government to insure the security of their nukes. Only a person who cannot think like terrorists or insurgents cannot see their ultimate goal, which is the aquisition of nuclear weapons. Its not about a pipeline or mineral resources right now, it may be in the future when Afghanistan emerges from the constant state of war they have been in for over twenty years. But there will be no pipeline or mining until peace comes, it would be sabotaged immeadiatly
