A giant chestnut tree that comforted Anne Frank as she hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic has collapsed during a rain storm.

No one was hurt when the 150-year-old tree fell across a fence at the Anne Frank House.

The building she hid in for over two years during the Second World War has since been turned into a museum in the Dutch capital.

The tree was one of the few signs of nature Anne could she see as she hid from the Nazis.

It is mentioned in her diary, which became a worldwide best-seller after her death in a concentration camp in 1945.

"Our chestnut tree is in full blossom. It is covered with leaves and is even more beautiful than last year," she wrote in May 1944, not long before she was betrayed to the Nazis.

The tree had developed fungus and was set to be felled in 2007 due to concerns for the safety of the thousands of tourists who visit Anne Frank's house each year.

But officials and conservationists later agreed to secure it with a steel frame to prolong its life and saplings were planted last year in an Amsterdam park and other cities around the world.

    • Well it's not relevant, but I planted 8 apple trees in the ground this year all are already at least a foot tall, and have about 5 more in buckets and are most all closer to 2.5 ft. already (just looking for a place to put them). Then I gave away about 8 or so... golden delicious, & another red/green mix color variety. I was bored have a yard, and love apples and they grow quick and easy once you figure how to sprout them...

I would've probably planted some pot too but I didn't have the seeds, I kinda don't like the idea of getting shot, and the potential of losing my AV in prison isn't all that exciting... Damn you prohibition, DEA, lying politicians, etc....

I bet somebody will offer a new one... So it's not the same, still seems like for histories sake it needs to be there.

    • I read about this earlier today, it's sad... 150+ years is a long time though... The tree had a healthy life...
