Obama Plays Down Plan for Iraq Troop Presence Beyond His Self-Imposed 2011 Deadline

As the last U.S. combat brigade in Iraq prepared to leave the country and cross the border into neighboring Kuwait early Monday -- seven years after the U.S.-led invasion to topple dictator Saddam Hussein's regime and 20 years after Saddam sent his army to invade Kuwait -- some 50,000 American troops are to remain Iraq until the end of 2011 to advise Iraqi forces and protect American interests. But there is some doubt that President Obama will keep his self-imposed deadline and American forces could remain in Iraq indefinitely.
