Ron Paul on Ground Zero Mosque Demagogy

ScottyT
A very good debate happened on MSNBC last night regarding the utter non-issue of the Ground Zero mosque controversy. Like him or not, Ron Paul exposes the neoconservative motives behind the vitriol against this mosque.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ6Hzf0x1vk&feature=player_embedded#!

"Is the controversy over building a mosque near ground zero a grand distraction or a grand opportunity? Or is it, once again, grandiose demagoguery?"

"It has been said, “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.” Are we not overly preoccupied with this controversy, now being used in various ways by grandstanding politicians? It looks to me like the politicians are “fiddling while the economy burns.”"

The statement continues here:

    • I like libertarians, one of my favorite bands is know for being "libertarians" and that would be Rush... I'm sorry Neil Peart is the best drummer in the world, and has been for some time... & Alex Lifeson isn't all that bad of a guitar player either.... Now that long haired guy that gets whiny sometimes leaves a little something to be desired, but still.

Anyway I saw a little bit of that interview on CNN last night, and I don't even know who it was interviewing him but that guy was stupid. It was funny the guy tried to to make Ron Paul look bad, and Mr. Paul just started correcting him and shut him up quick...

While I am not a big fan of late '80s Rush, "Second Nature" is one of my favorite Rush songs that has been criminally underrated--to the point that this is the only link that I could find on YouTube. The lyrics seem more than fitting at this point:

      "I know you're different.
      You know I'm the same.
      We're both too busy
      To be taking the blame.
      I'd like some changes.
But you don't have the time.
      We can't go on thinking
      It's a victimless crime
      No one is blameless.
      But we're all without shame--

We fight the fire...while we're feeding the flames..."

    • I usually think that Ron Paul is really a crazy old man but he is certainly 100% correct on this. Ever since this started, there has been conservatives everywhere hyping this up as if there should even be a debate. Those are the same people who wholeheartedly defend the constitution. This is a constitutional issue, freedom of religion and private property. They are not breaking any laws and it is not even a mosque in the first place, but instead a community center in which the last two floors will be used as prayer room. I bet if Muslims started praying in the middle of the city, the ignorant fools would be scared, so why is building them room to do so a bad idea?

There are two very distinct Tea Party Movements in America right now. You have the Sarah Palin Wackos & the Ron Paul Libertarians. I tend to identify most closely with the latter. The Palin bunch are right on the money on a few issues however. Like my Granddaddy use to say "Boy even a broken clock is right twice a day."

Sorry, it was a bad attempt to bait and it don’t look like he is going for it. I was going to talk about his spelling. Bad FoosMaster, Bad FoosMaster, (slaps wrist) :))

Also sorry, I don't agree with 95% of their views no matter which camp. But as you say, "Even a broke clock is right twice a day." Peace. :)

    • While I usually disagree with Ron Paul, I must give credit where credit is due.

On this issue Paul is right on target, and he had the courage to speak his convictions, which is quite admirable.

"Elimination of social pragrams"???you are WRONG. Ron paul has spoken about how the welfare state just provides Bureaucrats with Jobs and keeps the poor, poor. He has spoken about how it could be a problem when a massive amount of the population relies on these social programs. Ron paul has NEVER said he wanted to "eliminate social programs" and pull the rug out from under the millions that rely on them but we need programs working to free these people from this perpetual life of low-income and attachment to the government.

Do you really think a growing number of people relying on the Federal Government is a good thing???

Relying on the government to just be able to barely get by IS a bad thing. The Majority of the countries wealth going to the top 5% is Also a bad thing. The poor having to Rely on the generosity of the Rich is Also a bad thing. People getting help that do Not Need help is Also a bad thing. Glad to see that we agree.

The government is the Only entity that is capable of making the Rich help the poor because we all know how generous Most of them are Not. Eliminating or even restructuring the government involvement in Social programs and turning them over to Private industry, even though Some people Do get help they Don’t need, is the Wrong way to go because industry will do Nothing that does not make a profit. We can NOT rely on industry to give Healthcare to the people and continuing to give control of healthcare to the Private Insurance industry will continue to Kill people because spending the money to save those people is not Profitable. That is why I do NOT support Ron Paul.

Handing social programs to private industry? In what speech, interview or article does Ron Paul advocate this?

Using other politicians talking points against another politician is useless when you are not doing it on a completely biased platform.

    • RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT IN 2012 ! If more people were honest about their distrust for our out of control government bad reporting such as this would not exist. Christianity is just as evil as Islam. Give me a break people lets stop wasting our time on fairy tales. And yes I know Ron Paul is a Christian. Good luck finding a perfect candidate.

    • One side says we should be sensitive to the Muslims and the other side says we should be sensitive to the victims of 911 and the American people. The issue can be easily settled by asking the following question: Is Jihad part of the Muslim religion, and if it is do average Muslims support, or at least tacitly give approval to Jihadists who are trying to spread the Muslim faith through one of the ways approved in the Koran? That is, to conquer strange peoples and give them the choice to either convert or die. Another question to ask Muslims is do they believe that Sharia law should be implemented everywhere for everyone.

Our constitution prescribes freedom of religion. The privilege to exercise that right, however, should only be bestowed on those who believe in freedom of religion and agree that others beside themselves also have that right. Did radical Jihadists squander their rights, and put the rights of all Muslims in jeopardy by their xenophobic acts?

I'm no expert on Islam, but you first have to have a concrete definition of the term "Jihad." For many of my friends, Jihad (which I'm told is a Shia tenet as opposed to Sunni) simply means struggling to be a better person--not going out and killing people.

    • Woot Woot!

Stop the hatred! Bring about REAL Freedom! Enable property rights to all individuals!

I am proud to know that different religions are given, at the very least, tolerance for their liberties. If only people would drop all the "God wants me to kill people for him" talk on both sides!

Our foreign policy has created this blowback! Neither side can follow their own principles of turning the other cheek.

'Our enemies' even stated they don't hate us for our freedoms, but for meddling in their civil wars and building bases on their lands.
