The bloodsucking pests - which are not known to spread disease but can cause great mental anguish with their persistent and fast-growing infestations - have rapidly multiplied throughout New York and many other US cities in recent years.
Travellers are being told to be more vigilant and to check rooms before checking-in.
"Everyone has got to get used to the idea that they have got to check for them periodically," New York City environmental health commissioner, Daniel Kass, said.
"People who travel should look at the rooms they're staying in. They should check their clothing. There are good preventive measures."
Experts recommend looking for bugs with a bright flashlight, and using a hot hair dryer to flush them out of hiding places and cracks.
People who have bedbugs often never see them. The most obvious signs are bites, blood on bedsheets and their waste, which looks like black pepper. They are known for being extremely difficult to eradicate, and can go a year without feeding.
Bedbugs were nearly dormant for decades, and the recent comeback has experts scratching their heads. Some attribute the resurgence to an increase in global travel and the prohibition of potent pesticides like DDT.

maybe its my vocation, but it never ceases to amaze me how we never learn.this isnt like african bees or other non indiginous invasive species.this is directly related to our behaviors according to our behaviors as a collective.just stop doing the things that flourish bed bugs, like motels actualy changing matress's after a certain number of people slept on them not just when they sag.
if you live in the southern half of the country, get pest control.learn to do it, or pay a professional just like with maintaning your car or anything else.just hoping it wont happen to you is retarded.the bugs care not who you are.on the upside thanks to this i have a little job security, and work based on fear not real problems.getting a few hundred bucks to spray for imaginary bed bugs is alot easier than doing it for real.my customers think im a miracle worker cuz i fix it in one shot.lol

Boston has the same problem as do most major US cities, and it spans every level,no matter what your income! The banning of DDT may have been a factor for the return of bedbugs, but experts in this field say it is not the only reason, and in fact some experts aren't sure exactly why this has happened! everything from fancy hotels to college dorms and high end condo's are effected, and if you get them you have to throw out everything you own! While I am no fan of DDT they should bring it back to deal with the problem! am glad I do not have them but know others that either do now,or did and it is not easy to get rid of them!

I had them and found a product that worked wonderfully. The website is: http://deadbugsnaturally.com They are a nightmare but the opportunists are taking advantage and charging ridiculous fees to get rid of them. This is why I feel it is my duty to offer up an alternative to a $1500 extermination fee.
Thanks for the post Eden. Vacuuming everyday is also good to do but they do not actually live in the mattress, they go there to feed. Another tip is putting petroleum jelly on the legs of the bed. Apparently bed bugs can not crawl through it.Good luck to any poors soul afflicted. I know exactly what you are going through.

mosquitos transfer maleria but not aids, so your plague may not be an issue.but as long as you dont have some one in your house with them, your good.

what if even the bed bugs left jersey and went to new york, it would be an even worse condemnation of jersey.
maybe the jersey shore douches offend not only multiple people, but species? - 1 year ago

As mentioned above, experts recommend looking for bugs with a bright flashlight. I am totally curious as to how a bed bug could hold one let alone turn it on.
